Mrs. Mouse, Austin Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Civil Engineer Engagement Date: December 19, 2007 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Barr Mansion About Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!
About Mrs. Mouse

A Playlist with a Beat

August 31st, 2009 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Mouse

I wrote a few months ago about wanting an “alternative” dance party. Although I still feel very strongly about not playing all the cheesy, tried and true wedding “classics” such as “YMCA” and “Brick House”, I’ve definitely compromised a bit. I’ve thrown in a ton of catchy pop songs in order to maximize dancing. Keep in mind, I’m not expecting much of the older crowd to dance a lot. Most of them probably wouldn’t dance, no matter what we play.

At any rate, here is our “Dance Party” playlist. Feel free to use any or all of it as inspiration! Oh, here’s one tip: the Dude applied for a credit card that gives him free iTunes gift cards as an incentive for using the card. We were able to use the free gift cards to purchase some of the songs we didn’t already own!

  1. I Turn My Camera Own (Spoon)
  2. Whatever You Like (T.I.)
  3. Just a Friend (Biz Markie)
  4. Forever (Chris Brown)
  5. Beat It (Michael Jackson)
  6. P.Y.T. (Michael Jackson)
  7. Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
  8. Billie Jean (Michael Jackson)
  9. Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie)
  10. Down (Jay Sean feat. Lil Wayne)
  11. Sunshowers (M.I.A.)
  12. Everyone’s At It (Lily Allen)
  13. Hey Ya! (Andre 3000)
  14. Ignition Remix (R. Kelly)
  15. Transformer (Gnarls Barkely)
  16. Do Ya (Electric Light Orchestra)
  17. B.O.B. (Outkast)
  18. Move Your Feet (Junior Senior)
  19. Ghetto Musick (Big Boi)
  20. Paper Planes (M.I.A.)
  21. Shoop (Salt-N-Pepa)
  22. The Way You Make Me Feel (Michael Jackson)
  23. Wanna Be Startin’ Somthin’ (Michael Jackson)
  24. You Want the Candy (The Raveonettes)
  25. I’m So Excited (Le Tigre)

It’s already quite long, so most likely we won’t even get to the end of it. Every single song on this list makes me smile (and they’re all Dude-approved), so I’m happy.

What’s your all-time favorite dance song?

The only one I know from that list is “Forever” by Chris Brown (awesome song, but I always feel guilty listening to it ’cause of what he did) — well, I know OF ‘Paper Planes’, I suppose, but I’ve never heard it.

That looks like an awesome playlist! I love starting off with Spoon. I had a lot of trouble finding “dance” songs because we listen to a lot of mellow music … so I just settled for not-sad songs.

I think we have a similar itunes list, Mouse! :)

PYT is a necessity - hands down. And nice touch with the Kellz! But my favorite wedding song is September by Earth Wind and Fire. I just can’t sit in chair listening to that one!

We played Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough, it was so much fun! Also, You really got me by the Kinks and Lust for Life by Iggy Pop were really fun to dance to. :) Your playlist looks awesome!

This is a great list! We are thinking about the same things, we are both indie music lovers, and not huge pop fans, but we want music people will want to dance to!

So funny., I was just listening to “Paper Planes” last night and thinking I loved the beat and dance-ability, but thought if anyone had ever NOT heard it, that ‘gun shot’ part might freak them out … does your version have that in it?

We have PYT on our list too. I like old stuff - Build Me Up Buttercup and What I Like About You are my favs to dance to. (And I confess to liking Brick House - don’t tell)

Oh good! Honestly, as someone who loves to dance, but only to songs that I know and can sing along to, I was a little worried when you last posted about your alternative dance party. This looks like a great list… without being too cookie cutter or cliche. Excellent choices!

That playlist is……. awesome. What about You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC? I thought it might compliment the ELO and Queen/Bowie. Nicely done!
