Pom Project #1: Check!

Pom Project #1: Check! : wedding ceremony decor Chapel

Our fingers are sore but we can finally say we have made enough poms to decorate our chapel! Yay! We still have to make a million more, but at least the chapel is checked off. Our plan is to ship them to PA folded, and fluff them out before the big day.

So far, our chapel’s coordinator has found all of our plans for the wedding to be very strange. Like asking for a random half hour outside the church to do first looks early in the day. Or even dreaming of playing recorded music instead of live music in the chapel. I can imagine when she sees that I wrote “making paper poms” under floral arrangements, she’ll be raising her eyebrows!

Last time we visited the chapel I was sure to count the number of pews and examine how decorations could hang in various places. Here is the plan and an example of quick and dirty Photoshopping:

Pom Project #1: Check! : wedding ceremony decor Untitle07

  • Paper pom garland hanging on either side of the altar.
  • One or two poms (maybe a big and small) hanging on every third pew to decorate the aisle, unless I get a second wind and make enough for every second pew.

I bought some 1″ ivory ribbon, purchased at half-price ($8) for the entire roll, that I’m planning to hang the aisle poms from. There was in issue about how these would actually hang, since there is no apparent way to hook or wrap them on to the pew ends. My plan is weigh the opposite end of the pom down with sand and a balloon. I know, super classy, but it’s the best idea I’ve come up with so far and I am open to suggestions! It just has to be quick and easy, since it’s up to our DOC and bridal party to get the decor up before the ceremony. No plan yet when it comes to what we’ll do for the exterior doors of the church. Wreath? Pom? Initials? Who knows.

Now that I see our interior plan all laid out, I feel like the altar is yelping for two vases of flowers to be set on it. Needs a little somethin’ somethin’ up there. And maybe red pom garlands instead of white in the front. Sigh… decisions.

How are you decorating your ceremony space and who will be getting it all set up? You? Your florist? Some special helper fairies?

It looks like it’s going to be awesome!! I agree though, the altar could definitely use some flowers. And if you decide to use a florist, make sure she makes them one-sided instead of all the way around. I mentioned this to ours and it cut the cost of each one almost in half.
And, personally, I like the idea of the white poms up front. It looks like you’re planning on doing them in different sizes, maybe you could mix in a couple of small red ones if you want a little color.

Aww the pom poms will be wonderful, I also get those weird looks when I say the wedding isn’t in a church and that we’re standing in the middle of the restaurant, but in the end I know everyone will get it and think it is great… and your pom poms will be just as admired I’m sure!!

Love your chapel - the look and feel is very similiar to my college chapel, especially with the dark wood altar. I agree that flowers on both altars would look lovely - maybe let the flowers introduce your pop of red, while the poms stay white. I lined candles across the back of my altar - it looks like you could do the same thing with yours if you’re looking for more decor. Are you doing an aisle runner, too?

I really like the poms, and I think yours will look fabulous in the church. I emailed our venue coordinator to find out how many rows (our ceremony is outside) so I could know how many I needed to make. Luckily ours will be hanging on garden chairs so we don’t have to worry about the “how to hang” part.

so adorable! love the photoshop work as well - I’ve been doing a lot of that too to see how everything is going to look together. my FMIL is very talented when it comes to flower arrangements so I’ve passed my vision on to her to run wild with! fingers crossed! :)

I think your pom layout looks great! I was thinking for attaching them (I’m assuming they are quite light) you could tie a bow on the end of the ribbon and stick it to the top of the pew with blu-tac (if they let you use that in the church).

I know what you mean about getting a second wind - I’ve nearly finished beading 150 napkin rings (15 to go) and am now considering doing some more beading for decorating the bouquets - I’m a sucker for punishment

I agree with the pew clips idea. They’re super cheap!

My “Ladies in Waiting” Yes, my twin 14 year old cousins actually named themselves that! They’re too young to be in the bridal party (everyone else is 24 - 28 and we were afraid they might feel out of place).

They asked what they could do to help on the day of - and lucky for them, I had several projects that fit them perfectly! Decorations, setting up favors, sneaking me appetizers during the “snack hour” - all very important, official, duties!

Nice pom layout. I think I’ll be using some banners to decorate.

what about making a loop of painters tape (the blue kind). it should come off without damaging anything such as the pew’s finish. you can just stick the loop to the underside of the ribbon. and maybe a pretty jewel, crystal, rock or something to help counterweight it.
