Mrs. Sprinkle's Picture
Mrs. Sprinkle, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 26, Preschool Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Television Production/Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: The Marvimon House About Me: I'm a Bay Area native trying to create a life for myself (and my fiance, and our three cats!) in the vast city of Los Angeles. I love vegan red velvet cupcakes, pilates ,and mid-century furniture. Mr. Sprinkle and I met when my band toured through his city (we bonded over cake and a mutual love of Morrissey) and we are getting married on the four year anniversary of our first date. When I am not teaching preschool (or blogging!) you can find me perfecting recipes, petting kittens, hiking in Griffith Park, and overusing exclamation points. We are planning a vegan, green-as-possible, DIY wedding, and I couldn't be more excited to share all of the details!
About Mrs. Sprinkle

Mr. Sprinkle’s wedding gift is complete! When I had last week off from work, I did a lot of sneaking around. All of our finances have been merged for a while now, so it is pretty hard to hide things that I buy for him. In this case, I had to get very creative. One part of the gift was a little pre-wedding, de-stressing, overnight adventure.

When I dropped off Mr. Sprinkle for work last Thursday (we own only one car, so on days that I don’t teach, I take the mister to work so I can have wheels for the day!) I secretly placed an envelope into his lunch (yes, I pack his lunch every day! Healthy and inexpensive!) with bus fare and some instructions. I told him I would not have phone access for the day, but I would see him in the evening. It was all very mysterious.

After following his detailed directions, Mr. Sprinkle ended up in Beverly Hills, where I treated us to a night at the Avalon Hotel. See, it’s been 100 degrees and super smoky in our ’hood this past week. We live only a few miles from some crazy raging wildfires, so we have been breathing in raining ash and smoky smog haze for days. We also live in a 1920s bungalow with no air conditioning. Let’s just say, it’s been hard to concentrate or work!

I wanted us to have a place to relax, decompress and write our vows (I also needed a place for a secret project, but that happened much earlier in the day and Mr. S won’t get details about it until our wedding day), which needed to be in our officiant’s hand by the next day. So Mr. S arrived, we basked in the 65 degree air, and spent a few hours eating pita chips and writing vows.

The next morning we had two more stops! First, we dropped Mr. S’s suit off at the tailors to be finished up…

Then, we drove to the courthouse in Beverly Hills and got our marriage license.

We happened to arrive right at 1PM as they were opening after their lunch hour, which was good timing. When we left at 1:15, the line was almost out the door. The couple behind us made fun of the process the whole time, but we just couldn’t help but be giddy!

We chose to apply for a confidential license, which means that no one can order a copy or search our information in public records, except us. It is the same price as a regular license, but the only stipulation is that you have to swear you have been living together as a couple, not “as roommates”. You also do not need a witness to sign this type of license. I loved that I had to raise my right hand and pledge! I had never done that before. A license here in Los Angeles costs a cool $70 and is valid for 90 days. We are so close to being legally married that I can taste it!

Hmmm, we probably should have taken the license out of the brown envelope!

I am happy that our officiant is, well, efficient, and made us turn our rough draft vows in two weeks early. If it wasn’t for that, we would be doing them the morning of the wedding (we are total procrastinators!) and we wouldn’t have had a nice night relaxing in a posh hotel! :)

Did you write your own vows? Did you wait until the last minute, or were they finished ahead of schedule?

What a great surprise for Mr. S! It’s been way too hot out here lately and with you two being so close to the fires I can only imagine!

i loved reading this post; it’s not a secret that i feel the idea of living in southern california is kind of mystic in itself, so your little escapade/rendezvous feels all so cinematic. =)

i also think it’s great you’re writing your own vows - it is something i have debated, but i believe we will skip due to the fact that i won’t be able to read them without breaking down!

I would like to write our own vows … and lucky for me Loverboy is letting me have the say on this one … though it requires some compromise - we’re also saying some of the typical stuff. It’ll be nice, I think, to have our element of tradition with modern.
What a good idea to have a night together like that! Since Loverboy and I don’t live together, I imagine a night in a hotel would be perfect for vow writing!

It sounds like some fun being sneaky! Sneaky, but really sweet as well. We wrote our vows, and did them early. Writing the ceremony was something we spent a lot of time doing together.

i have never even heard of a confidential license before. It sounds interesting! Why did you guys decide to do it? Privacy reasons only?

Sounds great! We’ve been roasting in the heat and smoke all weekend, no a/c either and seriously contemplated a “staycation” at a hotel for a respite too!

Congratulations on picking up your license. I know that’s when I really knew the wedding was coming soon. And FWIW, I’d love to take some of your hot weather around here. Our low temperature overnight tonight is supposed to be 43?!

Ooh, we went confidential also, but that was because we could have our officiant come out to us and take care of everything without having to wait in line. I’ve heard their scary, glad yours was short and I agree, this heat is killing me.

We wrote our own vows. I didn’t finish them until the morning of our wedding. Everytime I sat down to write them I cried! I found it impossible to express how I felt about my husband. I was totally overwhelmed with how lucky I was!

I get married on Saturday and I wrote my vows last night :) Honestly, I probably would have waited until Friday night had my officiant not insisted upon seeing them beforehand!

Cool! Getting a marriage license was fun to me, too. I’ve never heard of a confidential marriage license either. I wonder why there’s a living together requirement.
