Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town
Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist
Engagement Date: December 27, 2008
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: Hout Bay Manor
About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.

We recently managed to haggle the paper place to exchange our 300 gsm unprintable paper that we’d bought a few months ago for something more printer friendly. The paper we ended up with wasn’t as great, but it’s down to the line now and we need to get moving on our invitations as soon as possible.

Age and Occupation: 25, Graphic Designer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Nursing Student
Engagement Date: December 2004
Wedding Date: June 21, 2008
Venue: Imperia Hotel (modern chic hotel)
About Me: I am a passionate designer who loves anything pretty. I heart all paper products (eco-friendly of course). My passion revolves around anything considered glamour; vintage and modern. In my free time, I love reading Martha mags, designing jewelry and making a pit-stop at Starbucks for a chai latte. I'm also a chocoholic at heart and my family drools over my homemade truffles.
WOW, I’m almost at the end of my recap posts and I’ve been married over a year. Can you believe it’s been that long since I got married? Time flies.
We when were planning our wedding, the honeymoon was something that was rather important (to me, at least). A getaway after the whole year-and-a-half of planning. Unfortunately, we soon realized that things were rather expensive… and the honeymoon was put on hold.

Venue: Ralston Hall Mansion
About Me: I'm a food-and-baking-obsessed, occasionally sword wielding Bay Area native who is quickly becoming overwhelmed with planning a wedding and opening a law practice at the same time. (Brilliant move, that one.) I love reading, online shopping, ice cream, my Macbook, Bollywood movies, hoodies, the UCLA Bruins, and of course, Mr. Dew Drop.
Mr. Dew Drop and I got engaged in December, and we made our first wedding-related decision right away. Actually, we made a few wedding-related decisions (but only because they sort of went together).
It was a good thing too, because after that I went back to being my indecisive self immediately. It may have been months until I made another useful decision.
Anyway, the decision that started it all was our wedding venue. We’re getting married at Ralston Hall Mansion in Belmont, CA (about a half hour drive south of San Francisco). It’s all I never knew I wanted in a wedding venue. A lawn in front with a fountain and a bamboo grove and grazing deer. A beautifully patterned hardwood floor in the ballroom. A balcony and grand staircase for photo ops. A side courtyard for guests to steal away to if they’d like.
For the curious, here are a couple of pictures, courtesy of Ralston Hall’s website:

About Me: I’m a Chilean girl who's crazy about nature and swimming. I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.
Ever since I was a little girl I have been in love with buttons. I don’t know what it is about them that makes me want them, especially if they are cute little pins.
I saw the wedding as the perfect excuse to start a “buttons project”. Here are the images that make me want to make tons of them.

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Marketing and PR Coordinator
Engagement Date: May 17, 2008
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: Rancho Bernardo Inn
About Me: I'm currently living in Orange County, but planning our wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are a DIY wedding "2fer", as I'm the crafty one and Mr. Ducky is in charge of all of our graphic design and technical aspects. When not wedding planning or reading wedding blogs, I'm attending grad school and rotating between two different jobs to keep things exciting. My favorite things include shoes, Post-Its, Labrador Retrievers, traveling, psychology, delicious food, photography, reading, craft gadgets/supplies, and of course, my wonderful Mr. Ducky!
I have to start by telling you that our invitations took a whole different turn than I had originally planned. Mr. Ducky and I went to PaperSource to buy all the paper and came across Khaki A2 matchbooks at 50% off. Were we planning on using this Khaki (looks like kraft paper) color originally? Nope, but Mr. Ducky was inspired and so we went for it. We bought the matchbooks and then ordered everything else online to get a discount from a sale they were having.
Our invitation design came from a whole bunch of different sources. Basically I knew I wanted that basic shape on the invitation that I’ve seen on several blogs lately and some sort of pattern in the background. After assisting Mr. Ducky with the basic invitation design, he just went for it and did the rest as I cut and glued away. I love how it all turned out and he did a good job of making sure it all tied in together. We aren’t professionals, but it worked!

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Astronomer
Engagement Date: May 10, 2008
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: Westwind YWCA camp
About Me: I'm a small-town girl who's making a living in Chile, with her heart in the Pacific Northwest. I grew up in Southern California, went to high school in Texas, grad school in New Mexico, and now I can't wait to settle down in Oregon! I love pears, hazelnuts,
knitting, traveling, running, baking, and long talks on the phone with
good friends. I'm planning my Oregon coast summer camp wedding while
abroad with my best friend - I'm always at home when I'm with him!
Hi hive!
Remember me? Lil’ Miss Bear Cub? I feel awful for being so MIA recently. It’s amazing how much gets piled on your plate at one and a half months out!
The primary reason I’ve been gone for so long is because this past weekend, I went to my best friend’s wedding. I didn’t date my best friend (à la Julia Roberts), but I did date her husband’s brother for 3.5 years. My best friend - my own MOH “E” - got engaged while I was still dating him! I think they’ve been together for a cumulative of 11 years now. Some of the best things come with time. The bride & groom - E+E - had one of the most amazing weddings I’ve ever seen. I didn’t take any pictures myself, but I didn’t need to. Everyone else in attendance was a photographer there! I plan to post a recap on her wedding when I can get my hands on some pics.
You want to know what it’s like to go to a wedding at your ex-boyfriend’s parents home?
It’s awkward. Very, very awkward.

About Me: I don't like nickels or the skin that forms on pudding when it's in the fridge for too long. I couldn't live without Pantone markers, fountain soda (3/4 diet, ¼ regular Coke), run-on sentences, or ridiculously oversized sunglasses. I will try to DIY almost anything and am just OCD enough to make most of it work. I am truly excited about having all my family and friends together, becoming Mrs. Gloss, and having amazing photos to prove it!
The clock is ticking, but I wanted to squeeze in one more DIY post before the big day. There will be quite a few after we get back since I’ve been too busy to post about a lot of projects recently. I’m a blog slacker, I know.
Anyway, I find myself with pangs of jealousy each time someone posts a picture of a super cute ring holder. I scoured eBay for quite some time looking for something to hold my rings, but nothing ever really jumped out at me (that was in my price range). So, I was forced to resort to alternate methods.
Ring boxes tend to be so bulky anyways, and I wanted something slim and modern, that could easily slide into the pant or jacket pocket of our best man, since we don’t have a ring bearer. Then one day I came across this post on The Dieline showcasing the rings and packaging of AMT studios.
I contacted the company but they were only making black cases at the time. If we got one, it would say ’diamond ring’ on it and there would be a sizing chart on the back. They could do something else, but it would cost a pretty penny. (We are out of pretty pennies at this point.)
The wheels started turning and I ended up with these:

Mrs. Stiletto, Chicago
Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit/Fundraising
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer and Photographer
Engagement Date: March 2, 2008
Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: The 19th Century Club
About Me: My fiance and I love living in the city of Chicago with our cats Basil and Linus, and vow to never move to the suburbs if we can possibly avoid it! We’ve poured ourselves into planning a wedding that reflects our personal style - modern and high contrast with a vintage twist. Blogging keeps me creative, baking keeps me happy, and grande nonfat no foam sugar free vanilla lattes keep me sane.
In keeping with my little fitness/wellness theme this week (remember my 2-a-day crazy workout post?), I thought I’d give you peek into what I’ve been eatin’ over the last year or two.
I’ve managed to lose 30 pounds, something I’m quite proud of. But in addition to having started a challenging workout routine, part of my success has been due to running far, far away from the foods I love - mac ’n’ cheese, SpaghettiOs (yes, I still love these and yes, I realize I’m not an 8-year-old), frozen dinners, lots of pasta…. the list could go on. I’ve also learned to stop skipping breakfast and to always bring my lunch with me to work. I’m often the girl sitting and eating carrots and yogurt at a restaurant while my co-workers grab yummier stuff, and I’m okay with that.
I always start my day with a high protein, high fiber cereal, usually by Kashi (I love the Kashi Go Lean and the Kashi Heart to Heart). I recently switched to skim milk and have never noticed a difference between that and the 2% I used to buy.
(Please excuse the old picture, but it’s me eating cereal, nonetheless).

Wedding Date: September 2009
Venue: Barr Mansion
About Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!
Last Friday we finally had our tasting at our wedding venue, Barr Mansion. In case you don’t remember, our venue provides the food (even the cake!), and it’s all 100% organic. So the Dude and I got to visit the place where we’re going to get married and have dinner and drinks in the Artisan Ballroom where our reception will be. A nice way to spend a Friday evening, if you ask me.

About Me: 1950's housewife sent to the future, reborn as crafting-obsessed, jill of all trades. I enjoy decorating, writing, baking sweet things, singing show tunes/dancing in public, wearing pearls, and knitting sweaters for my furbaby, Harvey, to chew upon. I heart pink, and believe that sparkles are the new black.
I’m seriously contemplating the idea of renewing our vows for some upcoming anniversary - five years maybe? I’d love to do it over, without the same stress, without all of the fanfare, just with us and a spectacular photographer.
We won’t be redoing our wedding photos this summer after all, because, well, I no longer fit into my wedding dress!
If you remember, I lost a lot of weight the summer before our wedding because of stress and a very tight budget, and dropped down to a very unhealthy size for my height. After suffering two miscarriages this year, I’ve been doing my best to gain back the twenty+ pounds and settling into a healthier, more fertile BMI. But, as a result of those efforts, my wedding dress no longer zips up past my now-ample bosoms. Whoops.
Surprisingly, I’m not so terribly sad, despite my disappointment over our wedding photos.

While the time has come to start organising the pre-wedding events, my bridesmaids haven’t made any progress with my bridal shower. because we are all in our early twenties none of them are particularly familiar with the tradition of showering the bride. As such, they’ve been more focused on plans for the hen night. However, unlike the hen night, a lot more women will be in attendance and will need some considerable warning. This event has been somewhat forgotten, so I may need to pass this task on to another person.

By the time February rolled around, it was official. I was a failure at wedding planning.
Or, rather, I was a failure at beginning to plan my wedding.
Well, we had a venue and chairs and a color scheme. And we had the female side of the wedding party. (It’s possible that Mr. DD didn’t finish asking the male side of the wedding party to be in the wedding until June.)
But that was it. We still needed to pick out a photographer, a videographer, a caterer, a coordinator, a florist, a cake baker…
I tried to make progress. But I was overwhelmed. Not just by wedding planning but by starting my own business, renovating Mr. DD’s place (um, because that was a wise project to take on right after getting engaged), officially moving into Mr. DD’s place (and therefore officially moving out of my place), taking graduate law classes on tax law and estate planning, making plans to go help out my sister once her twins arrived, trying to actually see my friends once in a while, and being okay transitioning from unmarried person to married person.
The last one was strangely the most difficult thing. Sometimes it still feels like it is.

You may recall from back in the day that “dancing” is a language I don’t speak. I know that a lot of people say that they can’t dance and then they bust out these amazing dance moves at their weddings and are obviously just being modest about the whole thing. That is not me, folks. I. Can’t. Dance.
