A Story About Paper

September 1st, 2009 @ 5:52 pm by Mrs. Dew Drop

This is a story about the importance of paper.

There was an invitation I liked:

A Story About Paper : wedding invitations stationery Invitat013 invitat013

I saw it on a website. I ordered a sample. It seemed to take a while, but one day it arrived in the mail. I liked the look of it in person, the feel of the raised lettering. I showed it to Mr. DD. He held it in his hands and looked at me.

Finally he said: “This paper is like the cardboard in cheap underwear.

No, we didn’t end up getting those invitations.

Do you think paper quality is important too? What’s your favorite high-quality paper?

i’m a stationery designer, so, YES paper quality is important to me especially for the main wedding invitation. for all other wedding stationery such as escort card, place card, menu, etc, we can sacrifice the paper quality a bit if the budget is limited. but i do think it’s important for the invitation itself to have good quality of paper :)

strathmore is very good. neenah is also my other favorite.

We DIYed our wedding invitations and we ended up ordering samples from three different websites, went to 5 different craft/stationery stores, and looked in two different states to find the right paper. So to answer your question…paper was very important to me!!! :) Since we were making our own invitations and printing them ourselves, paper was the key to make them look nicer.

When we were looking at invitations, it wasn’t a big deal to me, but my fiance wanted a heavy cardstock invitation. We ended up finding the invitation we liked in both a high quality book and a budget friendly one. We ordered the invitation from one company and the reply card from another in the same colors. (It was the same border and color paper, just the weight was different.) So we worked with our budget and were able to get by fairly cheaply, especially with what companies in L.A. were quoting us.

it was very important that our invites be on great quality paper. i think it makes a big difference.. ideally i would’ve had letterpress as well, but budget didn’t allow it.
check out strathmore #110 - nice, heavy, available in lots of print shops without the premium of crane!

I had to laugh b/c I consider myself a paper snob but was ok going with a less quality paper to meet the budget. Then my hubs felt the Crane lettra…and declared we would be using it. So, I get to say he choose the letterpress not me, which means it was ok to go over the budget ;)

Sounds like Mr. DD and Mr. Peeps could hang out criticizing paper together. ha ha. Hope you found something better.

His comment is too funny! The quality of paper was important to me but so was the cost.

Paper quality is uber important! I have a background in printmaking (and FI in print design), so we looked at paper for months before making up our minds. The main lines we considered were Neenah and French. Because our invitation design is modern and whimsical, we ended up using French. French has lots of colors and finishes to choose from. We ended up picking from their 100% recycled line. French is also 100% energy sustainable. Choosing French was our way of feeling less guilty over buying so much paper and making sure our money was well spent.

Your invite sets the whole tone for your wedding, so it’s important. We picked some very simple invites (similar to Miss Cloud’s), but when the sample came, they were so flimsy, we knew we couldn’t send them out, so-oh..we made our own. Never again-hopefully I won’t have to! But I do like the one you have shown.

Btw, if you want a really honest opinion, ask a man. They ALWAYS tell it like it is. I was able to avoid the sweater-coat and poncho trends (among many others) just following my husband’s sage advice.

hahah. i think my guy would notice the paper as well. he’s has very discerning tastes about stuff like that. for me, i’d like to get the best of what i can afford so yeah, paper will be important to me, especially since i plan on making the invites. i want them to look great!

I can;t help but laughing because the cheap undies comment is so something mr. cloud would say. our invites are on really thick paper, and he didn’t understand when we got them why they were like that even though he had seen the sample. he said he thought the sample was just extra thick so it wouldn’t bend in the book at the invitation place.. haha!
