Mrs. Chick's Picture
Mrs. Chick, Houston Age and Occupation: 28, Rights and Reproduction Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Computer Programmer Engagement Date: November 15, 2008 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: A farm outside of Houston About Me: Mr. Chick and I met almost ten years ago at Baker Blues, a college jazz party. He was attracted to my intensity, and I was mesmerized by his trivia pursuit skills and his dorm furniture adorned with his initials. We've grown more sophisticated through the years, with our love of wine, owning a house together, and parenthood (of a cat), but we have not lost our silliness or childish sense of humor!

Engagement Shoot

September 1st, 2009 @ 5:05 pm by Mrs. Chick

Lulu has once again come to our rescue.

I was telling - okay, complaining to - her about how much people charge for engagement shoots, and she kindly offered to photograph our engagement shoot! She is an excellent photographer, as you may remember from this picture:

We came up with a couple of photos to get a feel of what we are going for. I love the vintage look, and I like to keep the background very simple and muted, with maybe one point of focus that is colorful. You probably remember these pictures from a previous post:

I love how the subjects almost blend into the background. Very subtle and pretty, but not frilly.

I definitely want a picture of us with Blue holding these prop moustaches!

One more kitty picture. Just one. I promise!

Our ideas so far for taking pictures are at Rice University, 13 Celsius, the Waterwall, House of Pies, in front of our garage door, and the historic chapel at Houston Heritage Society.

How did you come up with your engagement shoot locations?

We took the phrase “engagement photos” quite literally and took photos at the park where he proposed! Hehe.

Can someone explain to me why mustaches are such a hot trend right now? I’ve seen them all over different wedding blogs, including Mrs. Powder Puff’s pics, and I just don’t get it, lol!

@dddd89: Hahaha! you know, I was wondering about that myself! I only like it really because my cat has a mustache so I find it funny, but I don’t know why other people think it’s so funny.

@dddd89: lol, I was thinking the same thing.

Some trends, you can totally see how and why they got so popular (like balloons in an engagement shoot) but I’m still scratching my head at how mustaches (mustaches!) got to be so popular.

We take ours in about 2 weeks. The location was easy for me. It’s one of my favorite locations in Colorado. We are having a DW so it was really important to me to capture Colorado scenery in our epics.

Honestly, I just told my photographer I wanted a vintage feel as well and he picked the site which turned out to be perfect! It is a Addison Aviation Museum which I never even heard of before until take my shots there. Fill with great vintage planes, it was perfect.

We stuck to on campus pictures as we both met in college and now work there full time. We also had a friendor do our photogs so we wanted to keep it simple!

OO I can’t wait to see how they turn out! I stalked photo blogs for inspiration, but when it came down to it, I kind of just went with the flow. I love our pictures! They are very us.

My FI is an architect, so we’re going to do our engagement shoot in Boston with some really great modern architecture in the background. Also, our wedding is up in Maine (think quintessential rural New England), so we wanted to do our engagement session in a very different setting (think stark and modern).

I am obsessed with the waterwall! I would love to do engagement pics there but I read somewhere that since it’s private property, you can’t take professional pics there without some permit. I’m not sure how to get a permit or how strictly it’s enforced (the thing I read led me to believe it depended on the security guard on duty), but PLEASE post about your experience for other Houston brides!

@Lauren611: Will do! Maybe you just have to make it fast. I’ll probably take my pics in October when it gets colder. I’ll make sure to let you know if we do end up going there!

Love your cat! We just stumbled onto our engagement photo locale and asked our photogs if we could shoot there.

We also had a friend take our photos. We knew we wanted to take advantage of the fall leaves. He lived about 2 hours away so we met him at his apartment and let him choose the locations he thought would be best. We went to a park, walked through the city stopping at some cool graffiti and a few interesting buildings and ended at the top of a hill, in the courtyard of a castle (remember I live in Germany, there are a lot of castles) where we took quite a few shots. Total shoot was just under 2 hours then we treated him and his girlfriend to dinner as a thank you. By the end of our jaunt, everyone was exhausted, photos take a lot more energy than I anticipated.
