About Mrs. Gloss

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly…

September 1st, 2009 @ 3:07 pm by Mrs. Gloss

… the wedding gift edition.

We’re BACK! The wedding day was perfect (a few snafus, but still perfect), and the honeymoon was amazing and relaxing. We got many fabulous gifts from our friends and family: some off our registry, some clever and thoughtful, and some not quite ’us’.

My favorite registry gifts :

1. Pyrex Glass Mixing Bowl (via Macy’s) - I actually got this as a shower gift and use it ALL THE TIME. It’s glass, but it has rubber on the bottom so it doesn’t slide around on the counter. It also has a pouring ’spout’ and ’handle’… both so helpful for clumsy people like me. Love it.

2. KitchenAid Mixer (via Macy’s) - Shocking, I know :). While I haven’t ’baked’ anything with it yet, I’ve made meatloaf with it - it mixes those heavy ingredients so well. And mashed potatoes: again, it just smashed right through them, with no hassle at all. It’s perfect for lazy people like myself.

My favorite non-registry gifts:

1. Leather Picnic Set - for two :)

(image)

2. Christmas Stocking - Inside was an “Our First Christmas” ornament and a gift certificate for our first Christmas tree.

Gifts I’m Still A Little Confused About :
1. Sex Straps - To um, bind our extremities to the four corners of the bed. I’m so glad I didn’t open that one in front of my parents. It wasn’t a joke. We checked. This falls in the bad and ugly categories. :)

Have you received any random gifts that weren’t on your registry? What was your favorite?

wow! i can’t believe the sex straps! I love the christmas stocking ideas, last year when my best friend got married I got her a tree skirt with their new last name on it, an ornament with their wedding date engraved on it and a mini christmas tree that they had in their house during christmas and then got to plant in their backyard afterwards! I love non-registry gifts!

wow… just… wow… lol

My aunt accidentally brought my personal shower gift (lingerie) to my bridal shower. I looked in the bag, blushed bigtime and set it aside stating, “WHOA! This is the wroooong shower for this!” It gave the whole room a giggle and no one asked questions. Apparently my aunt meant to tell me to skip it but was talking when I got to it so she missed me picking it up lol.

I would bet a million dollars that an aunt or grandma bought the sex straps. Hilarious! And I must buy that mixing bowl.

Who gave you that present, Mrs. Gloss?

Our coolest non-registry item was a gorgeous photo of the location in the National Park where we got engaged. It was taken at night and you can see all the stars. We have it framed in our living room.

Aww, the Christmas stocking with the 1st Christmas ornament and the gift card for your first Christmas tree was such a cute gift! But, um, the last gift? I bet that was an awkward thank you card for you to write.

Ah! I forgot another favorite non-registry gift! My parents got us a watercolor painting by a local artist of the boat we got married on. I love love love it :)

@miss longhorn: Um, yes - that may be why I am avoiding the Thank-You card task :)

Haha, at my shower I got TWO sets of lingerie. I am not very shy about things like that, but my friend who was sitting next to me said “Its a good thing MR-mskalinin’s mom is not here!”

It was hilarious, because she was! We heart sarcasm, lol. I can’t imagine how weird it must have been for her to watch her FDIL opening lingerie presents, slinging them around and telling the gifters that I would make sure my FI wrote their thank you notes personally ^__~ She was lovely though, and just laughed about it.

At my shower I got a vibrating rubber ducky and a larger than life cross to hang in our “catholic” home. My favorite shower gift was tickets to see Aida at the Sydney Opera House.

I can’t wait to see the recaps!

Heehee… who knows, maybe sex straps have had a profound affect on that person and they want to share the love? HA! Makes you wonder… the seemingly innocent might not be behind closed doors. ;)

Ladybuglove… great thank you note!

We registered early in hopes that immediate family could use it for birthday/christmas since we never know what to ask for, and usually get stuff we don’t want/use. So far, the only items we have gotten off our registry are items we have purchased ourselves. My sister bought us a coffeepot, but used our out of date registry, so it wasn’t the one we wanted- returned it for the down alt. comforter we did want. My FMIL buys us items that are on the registry, but in the cheapest form possible. For my birthday I got a dollar store flat grater instead of the Target box grater we registered for. Now I have a grater I won’t use, and the box grater is still on the registry. Of course I was gracious and thanked her muchly for the it, but COME ON would it kill you to buy the real thing- only a couple dollars more!? Oh, her!

Anyway- I covet that pyrex bowl, and I adore my KitchenAid mixer that I’ve had for many years. WTF on the sex straps? Yikes!

best wishes!

SERIOUSLY sex straps? Too much. I love that mixing bowl.
Our worst so far: monogrammed wine glasses, wine carafe, coasters and pitcher. Not off our registry. The clincher: I’m not changing my name. The gift giver asked me if I was changing my name I said no and then bought us a gift with my initial, my FI’s and “our new last name.” The funny part was my FI kept looking at it saying wait I don’t get it

Oh my gosh, who gave you the sex straps??

We have super thoughtful friends/family and. One friend gave us a g/c to stay at a B&B in wine country (we’re totally hitting it up for our anniversary!). Another called our honeymoon hotel and had them set up a romantic dinner for us at a local restaurant (and the friend gave us a g/c for it!). So awesome and such a nice surprise.

As for the registry, I love my collapsible colander! I use it every day. Not the most exciting of gifts, but oh so handy. Oh and I absolutely heart our Le Creuset dutch oven.

Hmm… now I’m excited/nervous about what odd items we may recieve this weekend! I really love that mixing bowl from Macy’s though. We did not register there, but it may have all of the best features I’ve ever seen combined into one! Great find, thanks Gloss!
