About Miss Chick

Aaron + Amy + Audrey

September 2nd, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Miss Chick

I’m not ashamed to say I have an unhealthy obsession with all things vintage. Here are a couple of facts you might not know about me:

  1. My mom’s side of the family loves old movies. I used to watch old Danny Kaye, Bob Hope, and Peter O’Toole movies with my aunt #5 (that’s how we identify relatives in Taiwan).
  2. When I was filling in my college roommate application, under “Who would you have a torrid affair with?” I answered Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, or Peter O’Toole. It was not brought to my attention until years later when my friend Brendan said, “What seventeen-year-old writes that?!”
  3. In high school, I only listened to the 1930s-’60s big band/classic music station.
  4. I obsessively watched AMC back in the day when they used to play Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire movies, not the Harrison Ford movies they do now. I occasionally took breaks and watched Supermarket Sweep.
  5. I am completely obsessed with all things Audrey Hepburn. My parents have said that I look like her, but I think they might be just a teeny bit biased.

Number 5 leads us nicely into this post. My friend Synthia, who is also getting married, sent me this link, which led me to another post titled Ode to Audrey. Unless otherwise stated, all images courtesy of The Audrey Hepburn Library:

1

I am far too snarky to pull off the roses on my head and the poufy sleeves. Audrey, on the other hand, has the childlike innocence and beauty to do so.

2

3

You know, I found a dress similar to this that I would totally wear if we were getting married in Italy:

4

5

$595 from Dolly Couture. It’s really not a bad price for a wedding dress. It can be modified to have straps or 3/4 sleeves.

6

Stunning. Again, I cannot pull it off. But would be perfect for a winter wedding, no?

7

(Source)

The dress below kind of reminds me of my rehearsal dress #2. It’s a bit longer, but the same idea. I knew there was a reason I love, that dress! I believe this dress was from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, when Audrey went out on a date with the South American millionaire, only to come home to a telegram informing her of her brother’s death.

Ah yes. Here it is in color:

Normally the pink tiara would not work. But here, it really does.

I love her hair here. I’m not sure if it would be too casual for a wedding, but I am going to try to do this tomorrow for work. I don’t know how she does it, but she is just effortlessly stunning.

10

I would feel like a fool putting on a tiara and a giant diamond necklace, and this look is definitely not vintage/rustic chic. But this picture makes me really really want to copy the look:

11

I knew Mr. Chick was the one for me when last May, before going to Rome, he rented “Roman Holiday” and made it a date to watch the movie with me. Someone who not only puts up with my obsession but fosters it is definitely a keeper!

I also adore gloves. I wish they were still part of everyday outfits. I get to wear white gloves at my job sometimes, and I sit at my desk pretending I’m Doris Day while I handle transparencies…

One more thing. I also love Grace Kelly. Not as much as I love Audrey, but the lace on her wedding dress makes me swoon:

I am leaning towards a lot of lace in my dress. It’s just so old fashioned and beautiful.

Are you inspired by vintage motifs? How are you incorporating them into your wedding?

I love all the Audrey stuff. I did Audrey Hair when I was in my friend’s wedding. It was so fun! I would post the pic but I don’t know how and I don’t think I can.

Also, we are having a table with pics from all the grandparents weddings, and the parents. The grandparents pictures all look similar to these.

I love love love Audrey Hepburn. Funny Face just speaks to me… I was a philosophy student and kind of obsessed with the Beats. And so, yes, I wore a Dolly dress to emulate Audrey. Ahhhhh…. just wait until I tell DH I want to name our daughter Audrey!

I’ve looked at tons of Grace Kelly photos. In fact Faith Hill recently did a photo of her as Grace Kelly and I copied the hair from my e-photos. I love the old school glam!

I specifically looked for vintage lace and beading when shopping for my wedding gown, so needless to say, I LOVE vintage style, too!

Oh, the days when men wore ties and braces, and slacks were considered casualwear, when wearing your hair up was a sign of elegance….

I wore evening gloves to a fancy rehearsal dinner recently and was asked mutilple times if I was cold…

Sigh…

They just don’t understand us…. ;)

Wow! I too love old hollywood. I love TCM and watching the old Myrna Loye and William Powell movies (Thin Man Series), anything with Fred Astaire, and watching movies with the beautiful Cyd Cherise dancing. But my ultimate crush ever is Gene Kelly. I have to explain to all my 20-something yr old friends who he is, and they still dont understand what I could love in these stars.

I have having a vintage glam wedding and I adore Audrey Hepburn. By far one of my favorite stars to date. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my favorite movies (I did a little blog post on it!). Your pictures are simply beautiful.

I tried to give a vintagel feel to everything without making it a theme. 24 more days to discover if it will work ;)

p.s.: oh, yes, another Audrey fan. Isn’t she absolutely lovely?

I’m pretty sure we’re kindreds Miss Chick! I grew up love love loving Old movies. My favorite movie of all time is Charade (the FH just saw it for the first time and agrees) starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (can you get better than that?) Heck my name is a variation of a title character in one of Audrey’s movies (the one where she wore the dress in the 7th picture down)… Did you cry too when they switched AMC from playing those fabulous Doris Day and Hepburn (both of them) classics to the 80’s stuff that is now classified as “classic”…. it saddens me so much when i see kids in my generation having no appreciation for the legends of that era…

@Mrs. Espresso: when you said you had Singin’ in the Rain on as you got ready for your wedding, it made me so happy! I’ve adored Gene Kelly (and all the other wonderful dancers mentioned) since I was little.

Great post, Ms. Chick!

I had forgotten just how tiny Audrey Hepburn was! I’m a little alarmed at the third picture down, her waist looks like it must be about 24″!

Love the dresses! and just so you know, you aren’t the only 17 yr old that answered like that, I too grew up watching old Cary Grant, Doris Day, Sandra Dee, Rock Hudson and Elvis movies. My sisters and I loved them and used to watch movies from the 50s & 60s all the time :).

I would also have a torrid affair with Cary Grant. YUM. Not so much Peter O’Toole, though. :-) Audrey had a style all her own, didn’t she?

OH- swooning over the Grace Kelly dress too! The Audrey floral dress is stunning also- I wish that old hollywood look would come back, and not as some demented modern version, but exactly as it was (sans the incredibly constricting girdles! - my goodness they are impossibly tiny!) I agree on the hair photo- Audrey and Grace (and I think Jackie O was in there) were stunning, classic, women. I WISH I could be 1/4 as gorgeous!

Great post! Best wishes!

My older sister who got married way back had a vintage wedding gown specifically made for here. It was not actually vintage since it was made brand new. But the style was a total vintage Audrey Hepborn look. I was really mesmerized by the style and fashion.

Love it! I too had a bit of an Audrey thing while I was planning (http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/09/28/short-dress-bride/). I too thought I wanted lace and ended up with none! It’s funny how what you set out to do changes throughout the planning process.

Part of me wants to get it for my wedding. But then I think…oh god will I be over doing it? I am definitely a “less is more” type of girl. Depending on the dress I get I will either get the tiara, wear my mom’s diamond tennis necklace, or rent amazing diamond earrings. But only one of the three.
