Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

When we last left me, your worried heroine, I was NOT at all happy with my hair situation.

I had a rough draft, I was not happy with the real run-through for a variety of reasons, and there I was, practically a week before the wedding, stressing about what to do with my hair. At this point, Mr. Swan stepped in. During the process he had had opinions about the wedding planning, but I was definitely surprised by how strong of an opinion he had about this.

“There is NO way that you are leaving your hotel that morning!” That’s pretty much a direct quote from him. A’ight, Mr. Swan. Rock on wit’ ya bad self… I hear you!

Fair enough, Mr. Swan, but how was I going to find someone who could do my hair the way I wanted it and make it to my hotel room for that morning with essentially TEN days left before the wedding? I had some ideas of where to call, yet I was worried about the price and working with someone new. After some discussion and encouragement from Mr. Swan, I decided to reach out to Khamit Kinks, one of the oldest natural hair care salons in New York City.

I have only been to the salon once before, and while it tends to be on the pricier end of the spectrum, the salon is also known for its professionalism. At this point, I not only needed professionalism, but a miracle!

I wasn’t disappointed. From the moment I talked to Taeisha, the manager, to the morning of the wedding when my lifesaver, Andre, showed up to work his magic, I was completely amazed by how smooth everything went. I was so grateful, happy, and most importantly, I was relaxed on my wedding day!

How did it all work out in the end? Well Andre is a bad ass. Remember this pic that I have posted in many a hair post? HE was the stylist that created it!

(source)

In the end he got a little cheeky with my final style. What do I mean by that?

This:

Yes, that’s right! My hair is in the shape of a heart! How cute is that? :) I don’t know how he was able to make it look so elegant, yet cute all at the same time. Andre also did a variation on the style by actually braiding my hair before putting it up (no wonder I was sitting hunched over for so long!). I think you’ll get the idea with this picture.

Here’s me walking down the aisle, veil and all:

(source-Dante Williams)

In the end I spent WAY more money than I intended on my hair, but what I did realize is that depending on the situation, it’s really important to get the most professional person you can find that will give you the least stress on your wedding day. You want to be able to trust the people you hire to be your wedding helpers/vendors. If you can reduce your stress level and if looking a certain way is important to you, find a way to make sure that it’s a smooth and as-close-to flawless process for you.

In the end I cheated, but I did what was best for me.

Is there anything for the wedding that you spent more money than you budgeted for, but don’t/won’t regret?

Your hair was incredible. I love the subtle heart shape–cheeky but not in-your-face. ^_^ It’s too bad you went through such a hassle, but I’m so glad it worked out in the end!

Your hair turned out absolutely gorgeous!! The heart was awesome enough, but the fact that it was braided was even cooler! I’m glad you got the result in the end, even if it did mean you spent a little more, and cheated =]

Adorable! Love the heart! So glad that you got to feel relaxed on your wedding day. Our wedding is 10 months of today and while we’re having a small laid-back event, I actually plan on splurging on hair and make-up. I am worthless at it myself and I want to have that relaxed feeling you’re talking about. You’re post made me even more sure of my decision, thank you!

I wish I had spent the money on a professional hair stylist! I had three people trying to do my hair that only left me frizzy and an hour late! Congrats on getting exactly what you wanted for your big day!

Best to follow your gut on those bad feelings. So glad you went for the better person in the end. It turned out great and there’s no way you wanted to be unhappy with your hair on your big day. I’m sure I’ll overspend on something, but I don’t know what yet.

Mrs. Swan, your hair was GORGEOUS! I had to leave a comment b/c I have locks as well and love this style on you. I’m not tying the know anytime soon (though the bf and I are moving in that direction) but if/when I do, I may have to ask Andre to hook me up! Beautiful!!
