About Mrs. Penguin

Registry Hits

September 3rd, 2009 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. Penguin

After a year of wedded bliss (ha!) we’ve definitely settled in with all our wedding loot and have figured out what we love and use most often, and what we wished we’d registered for (or registered for more of).

My number one tip for registering is: Don’t register TOO early! You’re only setting yourself up for disappointment. We got engaged 16 months before our wedding day… and registered 16 months before the wedding. The entire engagement was spent rearranging our registries to accommodate products that were constantly going out of stock or being discontinued. UGH. 8 months out would have probably been a better idea. We wasted a ton of time by registering too early.

That being said, here are 5 registry items we received that we love a lot:

Registry Hits : wedding registry W201771 w201771

Bamboo Cookware Stand

We live in a loft with NO storage space. Once we got this pot stand, we cleared out 2 entire cabinets in our kitchen! The stand is really cute too, and shows off our pots (ahem… still IKEA) in an organized and open way. If you’re a couple cabinets short in your kitchen, this is a great solution!

Reversible Double Griddle

I didn’t want to buy an electric skillet because it takes up too much space to store. You throw it over your gas burner and while the temperature isn’t as controlled as an electric skillet, it takes up NO room to store. This double griddle was a great buy, and we use it at least twice a week! If it’s cold outside, we use it in place of a grill to grill veggies, chicken, etc. Flip it over to the smooth side and you can cook 6 pancakes at a time on it!

Registry Hits : wedding registry W20177201 w20177201

20oz mugs

I don’t know why we ever bothered with those regular 10oz size coffee mugs. Seriously? I can’t remember life without these oversized mugs. 2.5 cup capacity means I wake up 2.5 times happier than the average coffee drinker. :)

Registry Hits : wedding registry W20177202 w20177202

Plastic bag holder

We try our best to use canvas bags, but when we forget them, we inevitably get plastic bags at the grocery store, and later pick up dog poopie with them. We used to throw our plastic bags above the refrigerator, and it was an ugly mess. this plastic bag holder is amazing. You can jam 50 plastic bags into them, and they store used bags nicely until you’re ready to reuse them. It’s amazing how much space it has freed up in our kitchen!

Registry Hits : wedding registry W20177203 w20177203

Le Creuset items

These were items that we just felt bad about adding to our registry. The pots are SO expensive, and I just figured that the price point was too prohibitive. We registered for a couple sizes of Dutch ovens, and ended up receiving one small pot from the line. I splurged and bought the large 6.5 quart Dutch oven on my own. I REGRET NOT REGISTERING FOR THE FULL LINE. Le Creuset pots are SO easy to clean up and give amazingly even heat. I know this is common knowledge, but it’s one of those things that I have to throw out there. I wish I registered for an entire line—that way even if we didn’t get them, we could at least get the small discount that stores give you for uncompleted registry items. With how expensive these are, a 10-15% discount would have been substantial. I’ll slowly be collecting the rest of these pots and Dutch oven over the years. They are unlike anything I’ve ever cooked in!

Hopefully if you’re in the midst of the registry process, you’ll consider these goodies! It’s a good idea to sit down and think about what the most inconvenient thing is in your home right now, and finding solutions for that problem to add to your registry. Not surprisingly, our favorite items have been the ones that save us space.

Are there any space saving items you have in your home that would make great registry items? What’s the number one “problem area” in your house?

pengy, did you know there’s a le creuset outlet store at the outlets in vacaville? that’s where i go to pick up my mom the occasion pot/pan [they've got a much better color selection then the px but i don't have a valid military id anymore so i can't take advantage of that]. if you need anything else you can check it out. it’s right next to the sanrio store and bath and body works.

and i agree, le creuset is awesome!

This is a really useful post, thank you! We’re not registering, but I think I need to go buy myself one of those griddles right now.

@tea I didn’t know about the outlet store in Vacaville. That trip is totally worth making for some Le Creuset action!

The magnetic knife holder thing. We cleared out a drawer with that. I LOVE my Le Creuset set. I owned them before we got married. If you are looking for Le Creuset, check Marshall’s. I always see them there in orange and blue and for about an 1/8 of the normal price!

This may sound obvious, but we’re definitely registering for a wine rack. I hate seeing a bunch of bottles cluttered on top of my fridge :)

Pengy! I was just thinking that it’d be nice for you to post a post-wedding registry update since you had so many useful tips pre-wedding- great minds think alike ;0). I wish they made a bag holder for paper bags since we seem to have a bunch (we use them to collect recyclables in our kitchen) now that SF doesn’t allow plastic. It seriously takes up half a cabinet in our kitchen!

Do you have a Le Creuset outlet near you? They regularly have 40% off sales on certain colors for items that have small cosmetic issues. I purchased a 5.5 qt. oven in Dijon (still can’t find the cosmetic issue on mine) for $114. No joke. :) It still has the same warranty and cooks like a dream!

Oh man, TEA I used to work in that outlet! (VV is my hometown!) I’ve inherited some white vintage Le Creuset from my mother and while it is AMAZING, it doesn’t have the non stick interior that I desperately need.

I looooove Le Creuset. Like - if anything ever happens to my fiance, I won’t have to cancel my wedding, I can just stick a bow tie on my dutch oven and call it a wedding. I’m making chili in the dutch oven right now. Totally worth the registry splurge.

I really like the reversible double griddle. It’s too bad I don’t have a registry :(.

I’m glad you got convenient things!

We registered 8 months out and are also running into the problem where things are being discontinued or not available (even though we asked them about it specifically at the store and they said those things weren’t going to be discontinued).

Maybe we should add more Le Creuset…

We just finished the registry process and we’re 8 months out. Everything I read everywhere suggested to get the registries taken care of around this time frame so we did. And after only about two and a half weeks, I’m already seeing things become unavailable. Including the awesome knives we registered for. :( What is a bride to do?

Le Cruset is awesome! I love those. I would love a pot stand…if we just had a bigger kitchen.

Glad to hear Le Creuset is worth it. I too am feeling bad about registering for these because they are so expensive.

Good gravy, I live right next to the Vacaville outlets and had no idea. Tea, I owe you!
