Mrs. Moonbeam's Picture
Mrs. Moonbeam, Los Angeles/San Antonio Age and Occupation: 26, Intern Architect Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Studio Analyst, aspiring Screenwriter Engagement Date: May 20, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2009 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church (LaCoste, TX) and Mary Gray Events Center (Castroville, TX) About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, but after college I moved to Seattle for a couple of years and loved it. Then I followed my beau out here to LA and we're getting settled in. I've been making things since I can remember. I was raised by crafters. I love to sew, draw, paint, build, cook, bake (anything with a tangible end result is fair game). In that same spirit, I've been hosting since I was old enough to cook and set a fancy table. I kind of take after my grandmother, who believes that your morning OJ always tastes better out of the good crystal.

Starting Off with Inspiration

September 3rd, 2009 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Moonbeam

The wedding will be quite the crafty affair, since I’ve been crafting all my life. There will be lots of kraft paper with various stamping and printing effects, tons of fabric, and some great ribbons. My mother is a fabulous seamstress and will be using the lace from my grandmother’s wedding dress (my mom also wore it). It’s from 1951, is entirely made out of lace, and has an 11’ cathedral train. I’m thinking I’ll be able to harvest enough lace to cover my entire dress in it and still leave some for the other granddaughters.

Since I’m trained as an architect, I have a love for certain kinds of paper. Mainly trace paper—there is plain white and then there is butter paper. Doesn’t that name just sound delicious? It’s a yellow-hued trace paper that I’ll be using along with the plain white to make flowers, invite belly bands, and hopefully a few other things.

I also love kraft paper and chipboard. I know it sounds odd, but if you glue together a bunch of layers of chipboard and then saw it and sand it like a block of wood, it smells so good. It smells like the burnt wood of a winter fire.

If I could think of a nice way to incorporate basswood, I would, but I haven’t found the right method for that yet.

Since I was raised by quilters and the wedding is in Texas, we’ll probably have a bunch of quilts from Momma Moonbeam’s vast collection strewn about the outdoor portion of our venue. There are wrought iron cafe tables and a gazebo out back, so hopefully people will wander out there.

In keeping with that down-home feel, there will be a dessert bar with some homemade tasties and others bought from the local bakery, Haby’s.

Here’s a look at my pin-up board.

Are you incorporating any elements from your profession into your wedding?

We did classroom shots in Mr. Joey’s actual classroom. That was really fun. :)

the idea of incorporate the lace of your grandmother’s dress in yours it’s lovely! i don’t think i incorporated my career on my wedding planning (maybe only organization skills) but i learned a lot about design & style!

I think it’s so fun that you’re using trace paper for your flowers! And the chipboard idea is ingenious. Basswood…ugh. Bane of my existence just for the pure price of it! =P So fun though; I’ve been thinking of way to incorporate architecture (besides the venue) into our wedding since we’re both architects. Didn’t think about using items of our every day life into the wedding though. Hm. Interesting concept…can’t wait to see!

I’d take yellow trace over white trace ANY day of the week :) Also love chipboard and kraft paper!

I love the quilt idea! My mom is a quilter, so we used a quilt for our guest book. Mom used a neutral fabric for the back, and quilted in straight lines around the design. It left the back of the quilt neatly divided for people to sign. We LOVE (and snuggle up in) our guest book.

I can’t say that I incorporated elements of my profession into the wedding, but the lady from the reception hall was VERY impressed by my room layout that was, of course, drawn in AutoCAD! My hubby was so confused when I had him help me field measure the room! He couldn’t figure out why on earth I needed window and door locations and sizes, but I just couldn’t help it!

So do you call it “bum wad” like I do? Or maybe “onion skin?” :-) Yellow trace + Prismacolor Markers = a great day!! Can’t wait to see how you incorporate it into your big day!

@WhimsicalBride: I’ve definitely heard the onion skin one, but I have to say, bum wad is new. And I sooo wish I was near the place so that I could measure it. I kept asking my mom to, but she didn’t. sigh.

I definitely incorporate aspects of my job into wedding planning, and it mostly has to do with organization!

p.s. I love white trace. Can’t help it!
