Mr. Mary Jane and I won’t be doing the “groom’s cake” tradition. Since our wedding will only be attended by 7 guests, we’ll all probably have trouble finishing the normal wedding cake. Even though I’ve never been one to complain about too much cake, I just couldn’t justify spending the extra money on something I was going to have to explain to room full of puzzled relatives. (”Why are there 2 cakes that don’t match??”)
I’ve seen tons of groom’s cakes made to resemble the Wii, Mario Bros, various sports mascots, and other great representations of a groom’s interests. Mr. MJ is a computer/math/science techie who loves gadgets and computery stuff, but he’s not necessarily defined by any of one thing in particular. I haven’t (until now) been able to think of something that would really be awesome. Today though, I stumbled upon a cake that would have been perfect for Mr. Mary Jane.
This cake was actually created as a birthday cake for someone. But if Mr. Mary Jane were having a groom’s cake, this would be it (with a few minor changes). Mr. Mary Jane has an Olympus E-series camera, so that’d be what I’d have replicated. And I think a telephoto lens would be in order too, since he loves to shoot with a long zoom (that’d also make the cake bigger!).
One of the many things Mr. Mary Jane and I talked about and shared interest in before we started dating was photography. Mr. Mary Jane bought a dSLR camera (the Olympus E-500) during our friendship, and he spent tons of time absorbing everything he could about how use it to his best ability. Even though I’ve been interested in photography for several years, I was always afraid to own a dSLR camera. (So many buttons!) But Mr. MJ has been an awesome teacher and an even better confidence-builder for me, and now I shoot with that old E-500. At family events and friendly get-togethers, we’re the couple with the matching Olympuses (Olympi??). Photography has been (and hopefully always will be) a mutual hobby for us throughout our relationship, so that’s why a camera cake would have been our perfect groom’s cake.
Even though we aren’t having a groom’s cake, I was at least able to represent Mr. Mary Jane’s love of photography in one aspect of the wedding:
His ring pics!
(Yes, you’ve already seen this picture. But I’m showing it off again because, look! Look at my honey’s awesome ring!!)
What’s the style of your groom’s cake, if you’re having one? If you’re not having one, dream with me! What kind of cake would’ve best represented *your* groom?
