Mrs. Mary Jane's Picture
Mrs. Mary Jane, Grand Forks, ND Age and Occupation: 26, Instructional Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lead Programmer Engagement Date: February 28, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: City Hall About Me: I'm a career woman on the surface and a homemaker at heart. I love fast cars and high heels, and my favorite food is cake. Mr. Mary Jane and I are both full-time employees and students, and we just bought our first house. We love to curl up on the couch with buttery popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and the latest Netflix arrival -- whenever we can get a break from everyday life.
About Mrs. Mary Jane

Mr. Mary Jane and I won’t be doing the “groom’s cake” tradition. Since our wedding will only be attended by 7 guests, we’ll all probably have trouble finishing the normal wedding cake. Even though I’ve never been one to complain about too much cake, I just couldn’t justify spending the extra money on something I was going to have to explain to room full of puzzled relatives. (”Why are there 2 cakes that don’t match??”)

I’ve seen tons of groom’s cakes made to resemble the Wii, Mario Bros, various sports mascots, and other great representations of a groom’s interests. Mr. MJ is a computer/math/science techie who loves gadgets and computery stuff, but he’s not necessarily defined by any of one thing in particular. I haven’t (until now) been able to think of something that would really be awesome. Today though, I stumbled upon a cake that would have been perfect for Mr. Mary Jane.

This cake was actually created as a birthday cake for someone. But if Mr. Mary Jane were having a groom’s cake, this would be it (with a few minor changes). Mr. Mary Jane has an Olympus E-series camera, so that’d be what I’d have replicated. And I think a telephoto lens would be in order too, since he loves to shoot with a long zoom (that’d also make the cake bigger!).

One of the many things Mr. Mary Jane and I talked about and shared interest in before we started dating was photography. Mr. Mary Jane bought a dSLR camera (the Olympus E-500) during our friendship, and he spent tons of time absorbing everything he could about how use it to his best ability. Even though I’ve been interested in photography for several years, I was always afraid to own a dSLR camera. (So many buttons!) But Mr. MJ has been an awesome teacher and an even better confidence-builder for me, and now I shoot with that old E-500. At family events and friendly get-togethers, we’re the couple with the matching Olympuses (Olympi??). Photography has been (and hopefully always will be) a mutual hobby for us throughout our relationship, so that’s why a camera cake would have been our perfect groom’s cake.

Even though we aren’t having a groom’s cake, I was at least able to represent Mr. Mary Jane’s love of photography in one aspect of the wedding:

His ring pics!

(Yes, you’ve already seen this picture. But I’m showing it off again because, look! Look at my honey’s awesome ring!!)

What’s the style of your groom’s cake, if you’re having one? If you’re not having one, dream with me! What kind of cake would’ve best represented *your* groom?

Wow that is a beautiful cake. I love the surprise of the RED cake inside the camera.

And the ring picture is fabulous too.

My husband would have had a penguin cake. He is obsessed with all things penguin, or maybe it’s just a leftover thing from when he was a kid and his family and friends are keeping the penguin alive.

We didn’t even have a cake! We just wanted to dance and dance and not have to stop for cake cutting.

Great choice in camera to cut… poor D700. Has to take such brutality!

What a neat cake! And it looks so dang tasty…

We are not doing a groom’s cake either, for a few reasons…one, that you mentioned (we probably won’t even finish the wedding cake) but the second is kind of funny: I mentioned the groom’s cake to my FI and he said, “what’s the point of that?” So…case closed in that!

If we did have one, though, it’d likely be a computer…because FI is a software engineer and he recently built his computer, as one of his hobbies. He also has a whole closet full of different random computers and computer parts.

Conversely, it might also be a toss-up between that and his other interest: cars. He drives a mini-cooper and is interested in all kinds of sports cars; just last weekend, we were out getting frozen yogurt and he saw some new corvette and was so excited about it he had to take a closer look and even take a pic on his iPhone and update his facebook status about it, lol!

We didn’t have a groom’s cake, mostly because we knew we wouldn’t go through that much cake! If we had, my husband would have loved a replica of Michigan Stadium!

We’re not having one but if I were to surprise him with one, it would definitely be Miami Dolphin themed, like maybe in the shape and colors of a Dolphins football helmet or in the shape of Dolphin stadium…FH is a football freak and grew up in Miami, so he’s a hardcore Dolphins fan!

@krissycake: Hehe, Mr. MJ had never heard of a groom’s cake tradition until he read this post…
We too have the “computer closet” by the way ;)

That cake is amazing!! My mom has a camera like that (Nikon, too!) and would get the biggest kick out of that.

We *might* do a groom’s cake. If we do, I’d have some one replicate a Cleveland Brown’s football helmet. He’s a huge fan (even though they are a less than stellar team) and would just LOVE it. I think we have room in our budget since our wedding cake is included with our catering package.

@Miss Mary Jane: lol, i am glad to hear that there are others with computer closets…hah, a few months ago, we were watching tv or something, and he said he wanted to show me something. so, a few min later, he walked into the living room with a huge smile on his face, lugging what appeared to be a plastic suitcase. I had no idea what it was, until he opened it and revealed a really old, like the original, macintosh computer. lol.

We aren’t doing a groom’s cake either - it’s not something that is typical of our area I guess, not to mention that we are having cupcakes anyway! My fiance though was a computer science major at Purdue so he’s always got something he’s hacking.

Talking about all these cakes makes me think of me and my roommate’s favorite show - Ace of Cakes on the Food Network!!!

What a great cake! They aren’t typical in my area either. I would definitely do this for a birthday though. Maybe his next one after your wedding?

Like you, we’re not doing a groom’s cake for both budgetary reasons, and the fact that the Mr. doesn’t even really like sweets. BUT if we did do a groom’s cake, the perfect cake for him would be either a VW beetle, or a Mac, and NO chocolate b/c he is allergic! Great post!

If we had done a grooms cake it would have been one of 2 things. Either a panda, because he has a bizarre love for panda’s or a donkey because he works in politics and lives and breaths being a democrat!!!

Mr. BC loves being active and the outdoors… so maybe he’d like a running shoe or a kayak-cake!
But then again, he loves pie a lot more than cake.
kayak pie?

I’m getting my fiancé an ice cream cake for his groom’s cake. We aren’t having a traditional cake, instead we’re having a French dessert bar (pastries, caramels, crepes, cream puffs, etc). Since I still want to be slightly traditional, I thought we could do a small groom’s cake and cut that one. I’m surprising him with it and he LOVES ice cream cake so he should be very happy. That camera cake is awesome! Looks just like my camera :)
