About Mrs. Mary Jane

Sash, v. 2.0

September 4th, 2009 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Mary Jane

You could probably tell by my previous post about the sash I made that I wasn’t entirely pleased with my sash-sewing skills.

I looked at the original sash (the black one) and made the realization that it was nothing special: it was just a piece of ribbon! *I* am capable of cutting a piece of ribbon! This was one craft I could definitely handle without too much of a time commitment!

Except for one problem:

Sash, v. 2.0 : wedding accessories diy Ribbon

Jo-Ann’s was out of the ribbon I wanted. They had this width in every other shade except the specific green I needed. Awesome. When I asked the clerk about availability, she very bluntly told me that she didn’t know if they’d get more and it wasn’t worth her time to go look in the back because they usually put it all on the shelf right away. (So I left thinking: “I’m going to tell the Internet what a huge help YOU were.”)

But anyway.

I found the ribbon at Michaels, which is good because that was the only other ribbon option in town! And on Saturday morning before my shower, I sat down with a cup of coffee and made myself a sash.

Sash, v. 2.0 : wedding accessories diy Sash Be

I cut the ends of the ribbon at a diagonal and used clear nail polish to keep the ends from fraying. Then I got to the beading. Several weeks ago, FMIL had asked me if I was planning to sew beads or embellishments on to my sash. I didn’t plan to; I have very little sewing talent and no beading experience. But as time went by, I changed my mind. It would add a little extra “fancy” to an otherwise plain piece of ribbon! So I gathered my beads…

And loosely attached them to the sash.

Ew, dirty wall! Needs more Magic Eraser! One thing at a time, one thing at a time… this house is definitely a work-in-progress!

Looks pretty cool, huh? It’s not perfect, but from far away I think it adds just the right amount of twinkle.

Items used:

  • Two strands of silvery beads (2 for $5)
  • Roll of green 2.5″ wide ribbon ($3.99)
  • Spool of green thread (leftover from the first sash - I’d have used clear if I had some, but I didn’t).

Total project cost $9

The whole project took me about 45 minutes, and I’m quite happy with it!

Are you adding a little DIY sparkle to your wedding day attire?

VERY beautiful! I love the shade of green! My dress already has lots of beading and pearls, and a sash, but I LOVE this idea! Maybe I’ll use it for my girls who are currently severely lacking in the lilac portion of our black and lilac color scheme!

Beautiful!! I just love it!

BTdubs, I boycotted JoAnn’s for just that reason, the people there are NOT friendly or helpful…and they’re usually grossly understaffed. Two thumbs down.

I love that your coffee mug matches your sash :)

As for the sash, it is the same exact thing I did with a pink grosgrain ribbon for my rehersal dinner dress! Love it!

Very nice touch! And I know that ribbon at Michael’s… I think I bought out 3 or 4 stores worth for the belly bands for our invites when it was on sale 2 for $4.

@lalalandTN: Every time I go in to JoAnn’s, it takes forever and I have pretty much the same “meh” experience. Aside from walmart though, it’s the only fabric source I have! So I can’t quite boycott. But I do keep my visits few and far between…

That’s so cute! :) Sorry about the JoAnn’s person. We don’t have one around here, but from the sounds of it, I’m glad we don’t. :(

That certainly is a nice little touch. I don’t like JoAnn’s much either.

I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the first sash. I was really impressed, actually. This ribbon sash is nice too though. If anything, now you have two to choose from. Great idea to add the beads, by the way.

@Charm bracelet: You know how they say “don’t buy a used car at night” [because you may not be able to see all of its problems]? Well, such was the deal with sash #1. Among other problems, the seam was crooked, which meant the ironed sash was wavy/lopsided/lumpy. You couldn’t see these things in the photo I took because I took it from a good angle. So while it would have been just fine.. I decided I just didn’t want to worry about making sure the “good part” of the sash was showing, ya know? ;)

I’m a beader (sort of) and a ribbon fiend/addict. Really, but leave it to you to put the two together… beautifully… LOVE it, and have never done this edge treatment!
