About Mrs. Onion

First Comes Love, then Comes Marriage…

September 6th, 2009 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Onion

No, no — I’m not pregnant (although I’m thrilled with all the baby bees around here). In November of 2007 (just two months after we got married) I posted about searching for our first home. I was sure I didn’t want to live anywhere but Manhattan, just like I was sure I wanted lace on my wedding dress. Things don’t always work out how you first envisioned them… they usually end up even better! We bought our first apartment in Brooklyn and my wedding dress had no lace in sight!

We made an offer at the end of last summer and closed in mid-October, 2008, which was a year after we first starting seriously looking. We learned so much in that year about the real estate market in NYC, its huge potential swings (Wall Street went nuts about the time we closed), what we wanted, and the joy of building a home together (even if it’s only 768 square feet)! We have spent the last year “nesting” and saving up to renovate our kitchen (it’s a pre-war building), which we hope to be ready to do about this time next year.

Here’s a quick look inside.

Living room/entry as it was when we found the apartment:

Painting in progress and railings removed:

All painted, windows from Vermont Salvage installed and curtains up:

With a lot of hard work:

You realize… you’re never “done”. But after seven months, we finally felt ready enough to have a housewarming party.

It felt like the next big step in our lives and we’re proud to have made an investment in our future and our life now.

Did you own an apartment or house before you got married? Is it something you plan to do together after your wedding? I’m sure this is on a lot of your minds as the real estate market has dipped in the last year and perhaps this made it possible for you to consider buying. I’d love to hear about your search, purchase and renovation/decorating of your new place.

I love the colors and style of your place. Old buildings make me happy, so much more detail. We’re sort of looking, but it’s still pretty difficult out here in LA.

Your place looks fantastic! I’m eager to buy a house (and I’ve already fallen in love with one) but we’re not sure that we’ll be staying in one place long enough to justify locking ourselves in so right now I’m just living vicariously!

Wow, I love your apartment. You guys did a great job decorating! We bought a house last October, almost a year before our wedding date, right before the market crashed. A week later and who knows if our loan would’ve gone through.

Congrats! Our townhouse is the reason that my e ring to a little longer the get put on my finger. We were house shopping this year- before getting engaged and found a great townhouse north of Seattle. Our low offer was accepted! Yay! But with closing and my FH moving in, it took until just days ago for us to get engaged. I’ll move in after the wedding! But it kinda feels like we did things backwards.

What a fantastic job you did! I love the way those windows look; it’s such an improvement over the railings.
We’ve decided to buy a house in the next year; just as we plan the wedding. It seems to make the most sense, financially, but strategically I’m not so sure it’s such a terrific idea.

Congrats!! Brooklyn is a great investment. We just moved from Brooklyn Heights out to dusty New Mexico. We loved it there, though. The Promenade, Joya (great Thai food for cheap, but fun atmosphere), the Brooklyn Museum and the farmer’s market!

Congratulations Onion! You did a great job decorating! We are renting a house and broke newlyweds so our decorating is sort of staying at a minimum for now..but we’re looking forward to taking the plunge in 2-3 years! I hope we do as great a job of decocrating our place!

The place looks beautiful! We’re still renting and hoping to buy in the next year, but in the meantime trying to enjoy having less responsibility :-) I try to remind myself of that when I have one of those “I hate this place” days!

thank you all so much for the kind feedback about our new home!
to answer your questions:
–the dutch tiled coat rack: my mom’s had it since I was little — it used to be in our entry hall.
–decorating/improvement blogs: I love http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/
–the paint colors: they are both benjamin moore “affinity” colors: the green in the entry/living room is flora AF-470 and the tan-ish color in the bedroom is amulet AF-365. this line of paint has primer built in so you only need one coat. i know that sounds CRAZY and i didn’t believe it either, but SO worth the time savings. it’s almost $60 a gallon, but you need so much less of it.

Okay - I think it’s gorgeous.
And while we aren’t home shopping yet - the wedding is in a month and two days… we are planning to move into an apartment about the same size as yours.

Coming from the South - where normal apartment sizes are 1000 square feet on up, I’m really curious - how do 2 people live in something that much smaller and not hurt each other? (totally real question because I’m worried about this in my own life!)

Also, best place to shop for space saving furniture and/or storage options?

Love the apartment and the details. Lol, actually, let’s skip the other questions and let me beg you to come help point out what I should do to mine! ;p

Congrats on your new place! I saw an episode of Moving Up on TLC a month ago or so and I would SWEAR one of the couples moved out of one unit in your building and into another.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE what you and Mr Onion have done w/ your place :) It looks great!

Lish: we actually almost doubled our space from our rental apartment in manhattan to our co-op in brooklyn, so this seems big for us! you just have less stuff. and enjoy your time with each other. i’m happy to give you tips if you like. onion@weddingbee.com. i like to think outside of the box — and shop on craigslist and at salvage places.

a few more answers:

–the tin panel wall hangings was my first nyc barganing experience from a flew market on the UWS. http://www.greenfleamarkets.com. the vendor was http://www.oldegoodthings.com.

–the wall hanging above the leather chairs is actually the ceiling of an old chinese opium bed. this was my “story” bed as a kid where my mom read to me and my brother. it’s since been taken apart and pieces of it are in all of our homes :)
