I did not intend on partaking in the popular post wedding chop.
I have pretty much always had long hair*, so I wasn’t even trying to grow it out for the wedding. I never considered taking a lot of length off! Not for one minute… until a very bad “trim” lead me to the chop. Let me explain.
I didn’t have time to get a trim after the after the big event, and by August the length was starting to get ridiculous! Here’s a picture of my hair a few weeks before the wedding… you can only imagine the length after three more months!

* Here is the evidence of the only period in my life with short hair. Yes, it was the dreaded Dorothy Hamill cut!!! The fact that I was scared of a post wedding chop probably stems from the short hair that I was forced to wear as a child… having had no say then, I must have subconsciously vowed never to go short again!

Sister Taffy and I, circa December 1984!
My regular hairstylist had been out of town for most of the summer, so I tried to wait until she came back for my trim. By early August, I was really going nuts. Yes, I usually had long hair, but I was starting to feel like Lady Godiva! I took my chances and went to a random salon for my trim, and ended up with a really bad haircut. It was way shorter that what I had asked for, and the layers were weird and shaggy… it just didn’t feel like me.
Here is the only picture of my bad haircut—a photographer from the Detroit Metro Times took it at a Dr. Sketchy drawing session.

I know that it is not the worst haircut ever, but after two weeks I still couldn’t stand it. With a little coaxing from Mr. Taffy, some friends and my hairstylist (who was back in town!), I decided to go for the big chop.

Eeee, my hair is short! I love it, and am glad that I had the bad cut to push me to try something new. I am still getting used to it (looking for phantom hair when I brush and shampoo), but I get excited when I look in the mirror and see my new hair.
Will you keep your current style after the wedding? Are there any married bees out there that had to take the post wedding chop in stages, like me?
Also, feel free to share your horror stories about childhood haircuts or bad cuts in general! I am still recovering. ![]()
