Post Wedding Plunge!

September 6th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Taffy

I did not intend on partaking in the popular post wedding chop.

I have pretty much always had long hair*, so I wasn’t even trying to grow it out for the wedding. I never considered taking a lot of length off! Not for one minute… until a very bad “trim” lead me to the chop. Let me explain.

I didn’t have time to get a trim after the after the big event, and by August the length was starting to get ridiculous! Here’s a picture of my hair a few weeks before the wedding… you can only imagine the length after three more months!

* Here is the evidence of the only period in my life with short hair. Yes, it was the dreaded Dorothy Hamill cut!!! The fact that I was scared of a post wedding chop probably stems from the short hair that I was forced to wear as a child… having had no say then, I must have subconsciously vowed never to go short again!

Sister Taffy and I, circa December 1984!

My regular hairstylist had been out of town for most of the summer, so I tried to wait until she came back for my trim. By early August, I was really going nuts. Yes, I usually had long hair, but I was starting to feel like Lady Godiva! I took my chances and went to a random salon for my trim, and ended up with a really bad haircut. It was way shorter that what I had asked for, and the layers were weird and shaggy… it just didn’t feel like me.

Here is the only picture of my bad haircut—a photographer from the Detroit Metro Times took it at a Dr. Sketchy drawing session.

I know that it is not the worst haircut ever, but after two weeks I still couldn’t stand it. With a little coaxing from Mr. Taffy, some friends and my hairstylist (who was back in town!), I decided to go for the big chop.

Eeee, my hair is short! I love it, and am glad that I had the bad cut to push me to try something new. I am still getting used to it (looking for phantom hair when I brush and shampoo), but I get excited when I look in the mirror and see my new hair.

Will you keep your current style after the wedding? Are there any married bees out there that had to take the post wedding chop in stages, like me?

Also, feel free to share your horror stories about childhood haircuts or bad cuts in general! I am still recovering. ;)

so cute!

In middle school, I wanted the “jennifer aniston” hairstyle - cute layers, and a little short!
THEY GAVE ME A MULLET. consequently, I am petrified whenever a new stylist gives me layers!

When I was 8ish or 9ish, I had this horrible “tail” on the back of my chin-length hair. It was like a pseudo-mullet or something. There are no pictures of it (had the tail cut off after a couple months) and both my parents seem to have no recollection of the haircut that scarred me for life.

i’m actually on the look out for a new hair style. i get mine cut into layers but i think i want something different but of course want to keep my length. i don’t think i’d be coaxable into a shorter hair cut!

I can’t wait to do the PWC!! My hair history is the same as yours, and a few years ago i got a horrible perm that forced me to go short. I vowed to grow it out longer for the wedding, but now that its the longest its ever been I can’t wait to chop it back to the length of your first cut at least.

So cute! I’m trying to grow my hair out for the wedding from a big chop like that. It’s so fun having short hair for awhile. :) After the wedding, I’m going to go back to my heavy, straight bangs. They make me feel like a rockstar.

It looks so great! Moms beware, a child’s haircut can have long term affects. My mother was made to have short hair as a child, so she loved long hair. Therefore I had hair down to my waist as a child and ever since I’ve been in charge of my haircuts they’ve just gotten shorter and shorter.

I love it! You have that perfectly straight, thick hair that I have always wanted…. alas, my fine, curly hair will never, ever look like that. Since the wedding my hair has actually gotten longer and longer and I’ve started wearing it curly again (after 8 years of daily straightening). My hair is actually easier to style the longer it is, so I chalk the length up to pure laziness ;-) (PS, I have never done Dr. Sketchy but now you’ve got me wanting to go to the one in Philly!!!)

I had a bad hairstyle experience as a child! I have really curly hair, so when you your cutting my hair (it’s usually wet) and you cut an inch off, my curls will spring up once they’re dry and it will look like you cut 2 inches off. Imagine my horror, when I go get my hair cut (I was probably in 5th grade) and they cut off about 4 inches!!! My hair curly hair dried, and shrunk and I looked like a boy. A boy with curly hair! Mental picture: think of Screetch from Saved my the Bell. From that point on, I never let anyone cut my hair more than 2 inches at a time.
Anyway, your hair looks great!

I also had the dreaded Dorothy Hamill cut!!!!! That explains why I’ve had very long hair ever since it’s been up to me. But I also ended up doing a big chop after the wedding. I just kept growing it and growing it until it was ridiculously long and cut off 10 inches for Locks of Love — but still had long hair after the chop ;)

I love your new cut! It looks fantastic on you!

Love the short hair! it looks great on you!

I had a perpetual pixie cut up until I was about 10 years old because my mom thought I looked cute that way (flippy curly crazy mophead). But I idolized my big sister’s long straight hair so much that I’d tell the hairdresser to “cut my hair long”!

I’d also take this yellow crotchet baby blanket and drape it over my head with an old yellow hat my mom wore as a bridesmaid to keep it place. Then I proceed to prance around with my “beautiful long hair”.

I’m itching to chop off my hair as well. I have always had long hair and right about the time I was going to cut it to just at my shoulders I got engaged. Right now it is so long that it wraps around my neck when I sleep (annoying!).

The worst part after a major shop is when you are in the shower and put a bunch of shampoo in your hand and realize that it is about 5 times more than you need for your short hair.

I love it! I have been contemplating the post wedding chop. I have had long hair since middle school so I am afraid short hair will make me look young, plus I have a round face, so I am afraid of making it look rounder. I thought I might do an elongated bob, i.e. one that hits the collar bones rather than the chin

i love it taffy!

i whacked my hair off bc i wanted to be like my mom when i was 7… rather then pullin’ off the “short hair mom cut” i looked rather boyish bein’ a scruffy child lol

did i mention my perm in 5th grade? no? okay yeah, when you don’t know how to take care of your hair very well quite yet you shouldn’t get a do that needs daily work!

my hair got pretty long for the wedding and three months later it was getting on my nerves too, just like you. I thought about getting it short (shoulder length) but then went against it .. only a trim of 2 inches worked for now. I might go back in another month and get it chopped! I’m still itching for the short hair again. :)

You look great with your new hair and old!

Thanks everyone!

@Lexie Taffette of Honor: I know!!! You should have seen Sandy’s face when I told her to cut it all off… she has been doing my hair for five years and couldn’t believe I was finally going short!

@DarlingNikki586: @Hbomber: Ugh, that haircut was the worst!!! ;)

@Miss Bear Cub: Oh no, that is horrible!

@harperjs: When my hair grew out from the bowl haircut, I totally had a tail. *shudders* ;)
@fiftyfootbride: I wish I could rock bangs. I have a part that just won’t work, and they end up splitting!

@Jessie516: I can’t wait to see your new hair!!!

@Miss Moonbeam: It’s so funny how that works out, isn’t it?

@Charm bracelet: Oh no, that would be crazy! I wouldn’t even think of the hair shrinking like that afterward!

@meganleigh: That is a really cute story!

@canegirl08: Mine was a problem while sleeping too! I had to pile it all above my head onto the pillow!
