Movin’ on Up!

September 7th, 2009 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Star

Sorry to have been a little less active around the hive for the past week or so! Mr. Star and I have been moving apartments and it has taken quite the toll on us, especially with just over a month until the wedding! I definitely lifted some things on moving day that I shouldn’t have (like one end of the air conditioner and some large IKEA pieces) and totally pulled something in my back, too!

We had intended to move in the spring of next year, once wedding fever had died down and things were less crazy, but we have been having a dispute with our landlord over some serious maintenance issues (don’t get me started on how long we’ve been forced to sleep on the couch because of it) and we got him to agree to let us out of the lease before things escalated.

Lucky for us, we got a seriously spiffy new place! We’ve moved from a fourth-floor walkup with a view of the alley, to this:

IMG_421

And did I mention it has five closets (up from ONE!), level floors, more square footage, an ice maker, and a brand new kitchen and bathroom?? Asmuch as I loved our first place, two out of the four kitchen drawers didn’t open. Period.

Even though it was unintentional, we’ve ended up getting what is pretty much a newlywed home! It’s really exciting to get a new place right as we’re getting married because it feels like even more of a fresh start to a whole new life.

IMG_42301

As I’ve been griping about having to move so close to the wedding (hello, stress!), many of the bees have consoled me with the fact that it would have been much worse to move AFTER the wedding and have to move alllll the wedding gifts, my dress, and so on. I see the logic in that argument, especially after how much stuff we accumulated just from my bridal shower. However, we did have to move 8 plastic bins and 6 or 7 big boxes full of centerpieces, ceremony décor, my veils, the mask-favors, and more, so it kind of feels like a wash at this point.

What do you think – if you moved around your wedding, do you think it was easier to move before the wedding, or after?  How did your new married home feel different from your old “dating” home?

So glad to have you back, Star! The new place looks great. I’m sure it’s going to look fabulous once you’re all moved in. Maybe you can give another video tour on BeeTV one night? :)

Congrats! The view looks amazing!

FH and I are moving about four or five months before the wedding. We figured it would be better to settle in BEFORE all the hustle and bustle of the wedding. And I think part of it was having room for wedding gifts when they start coming in too!

Congrats on the move! I just moved from NYC to the Netherlands to be with my Dutch boyfriend (now my fiance) and there are so many things that I want to change about our apartment!

I think it is great to move BEFORE the wedding. We got engaged right before we moved in together and its great to be able to use the engagement gifts in our new place. To think that these guys would have to sit in boxes for months until we got to a new place would be heartbreaking!

Gorgeous! We recently bought a house and moved in July. It was earlier enough for us that we hadn’t started accumulating wedding things yet really, but remodeling and buying a house while also planning a wedding is stressful!

nice upgrade! i have no experience on this but i would think it’d be nice to move beforehand. sure there is the added stress of organizing a move along with wedding planning, but at least you’ll get the chance to acclimate and get used your new digs and when you get back from the honeymoon, you can relax into your new place and not have to worry about packing and moving!

great place! i’m so happy for you two.

we moved into our new place, in a completely new city, on june 27th and we got married on august 29th. even though the move was stressful, as was having to shlep all of our wedding stuff from new jersey to our new place in dc back to new jersey for the wedding, i’m glad we moved when we did. all of our gifts have been delivered to our new place, and it would have been a pain to have to move them too.

We are moving the end of this month. And even though it is six months out the searching for a new place (we also had issues with landlord and I refused to stay) and now packing and planning the move it has taken a lot of my focus off of the wedding. When I realized how much I have been putting off I freaked. So I cannot even imagine one month before and all the things you have going on! I hope you had lots of good friends to help you with the move!

What a cool apartment! We lived together beforehand, so we were lucky not to have to deal with moving stress around the time of the wedding. Good luck with everything!

Congrats on the new home! We’re doing very much the same. We’re moving to Europe one week exactly after the wedding and right now, as we’re packing everything up together, it really does feel like we’re beginning our new life together and will have our first new home together. Living together has been lovely and it’s even nicer that we’re doing all of the preparations for our new home together too.

NOT going to lie, but my FI and I have had similar issues with our leasing office and maintenance. We have had to sleep on the couch numerous times because of it, but are not yet in a place to move again (although we are thisclose to doing it). LOVE the view in your new place!

OMG is that your porch!! sweeeet! and 5 closets in NYC??? awesome! congrats! I think I’m moving right after the wedding unless he finds a job elsewhere sooner as he is looking right now - who knows? House pricing in upstate NY has intrigued him so we may be leaving the metro area.

Wow! I can’t believe you aren’t a huge stressball, i can’t imagine it… even though our lease on our place we’re at now does run out 10 days after our wedding date next year! Yikes!

Congrats on the new place though! It looks like it has amazing views & is a great upgrade!

Yay for the new place! Sounds like an awesome upgrade in many aspects. We moved 8 months before the wedding. I guess that was close enough for it to feel like our newly engaged/ married home.

Has a great view!!!

Since Mr. Smilie an I just moved into our net appartment we definitely won’t move either before or after the wedding.

I’m glad you managed it so well. I’d be totally down with all that stress an preparations for the wedding.

Sounds like you got a serious upgrade. I heard NYC rents fell with the economy but didn’t think it would be such a huge difference. I guess I should have know when my friend got her rent reduced this year. We need to move (our building was sold and the new owners want in) before the wedding but finding a new place is proving to be the problem. Hope we can get lucky and manage to upgrade as well.

We just got married 3 weeks ago and moved the week between our wedding and honeymoon. It was MISERABLE. I’m still unpacking. I would have much preferred to move before the wedding, especially since my parents and inlaws were storing a bunch of the wedding projects at their house. The probably 10 boxes of wedding stuff we had didn’t even hold a candle to the nearly 40 huge boxes of wedding gifts we had to move. Ugh - moving pretty much sucks no matter what.

Congrats! Your new view looks wonderful. We’ve been debating this actually for a while…wait until after the wedding to move (and buy a place) and start looking now? We don’t have as much saved now for a down payment as we will in a year…but with the housing prices as they are, should we not wait??? back and forth we go!

Congrats on the new place! We just found out that we will have to move before the wedding as well - about 4 months before AND during the holidays. Maybe it is better than waiting til after.

Oh wow. I want to move to NYC soooooo badly. I can only afford to sublet someone’s walk-in closet, but it would totally be worth it!

Nice upgrade! We were in a similar situation with landlord problems and an unintentional upgrade. We moved a year after the wedding and there was still a ton of wedding stuff! and that’s my office building in the second photo! WEIRD!!
