About Mrs. Mary Jane

Not a PaperSource in Sight

September 9th, 2009 @ 11:54 am by Mrs. Mary Jane

Not everyone lives in L.A., Chicago or New York City. Some of us also don’t live in Atlanta, Tucson or Colorado Springs. Hell, Mr. Mary Jane and I don’t live in Knoxville, Syracuse, or even Fargo.

We live in Grand Forks. It’s a decent, small city. A college town, too. We’ve got access to all of the basic stores: Office Max, Michaels, Target, Walmart, JCPenney, Sears… you get the picture.

We do not have a Saks, a Nordstrom, or a Neiman’s. There’s no PaperSource. No David’s or Men’s Wearhouse. No Trader Joe’s and no Whole Foods. No Costco, either. And that’s not because the town’s already satisfactorily filled with independent boutiques and crafters’ havens. It’s got a few, but mostly: there just isn’t the market for that stuff here.

This post is for the gals who live in places like mine. I bet you look at a lot of the awesome things other women have done for their weddings and you think: “I could do that too, if I only had a _________ store in my locale.”

I’m here to tell you: don’t sell yourself short!

A lot of creative improvisation has gone in to my wedding. All of my DIY supplies came from two places: Michaels and Office Max. I used a 100-pack of greeting card envelopes for our invitations. There are paper clips holding together our RSVPs. I’m putting together my own bouquet using flowers I’m buying at a random local grocery store. But to be clear: I’m not settling. I’m doing the best I can with what I’ve got.

Don’t forget about the Internet, either. I bought my dress*, shoes, hair accessory and bracelet online. I found the inspiration for both of our rings there, too. Cake topper? Also bought online.

The bright side of planning a wedding in a unique and possibly secluded location is that whatever you do will be unique. Keep in mind that “unique” does not equate to “half-assed” or “Dollar-Store klassy” unless that’s the amount of effort you give it.

So, ladies of the forgotten towns: don’t bitch and moan about how hard your life is. Revel in the chance to do something creative. And bask in the glory of your success when your guests exclaim: “How did she ever find something like that around here?!”

*I think I actually bought (and returned) 10+ dresses online before I found The One. ;)

ha ha, I live in New York City and I still feel like I can never find what I need! I look forward to visiting my family in the ‘burbs so I can shop at all the spacious, well stocked chain stores!

Yeah, I always think, “Man, if I could only get to a Michael’s.” Online has been a godsend for me because most things in NYC are so crazy expensive.

Amen! My wedding is all about Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and yes….the Dollar Tree. I think it looks nice! I may not have lots of money to hire people, but my DIY looks just as good!

Oh yeah, and there will definitely be some appearances from things I bought at Jack’s 99 cent store ;)

I doubt this makes you feel any better, but I had never heard of Michael’s before Wedding bee. Also we don’t have Walmart in NYC, but that’s okay. :)

@Star - Apparently there is a Michael’s in Queens, but it’s not easily accessible by public transport.

I have all those stores at my disposal and still didn’t make anything half as awesome as the stuff you’ve made MJ :)

Yeah, having stores is not my problem, it’s my inability to make anything crafty. But maybe I could pretend its the lack of stores? Oh wait, I live in Austin. Hmm..what’s my next excuse?

I hear you, Mary Jane. I’ve had to make due without a PaperSource even remotely close to my town! You don’t need the fancy shops, just a little creativity with what’s available :)

Miss Star, I love Jacks 99cts!

Actually I think a lot of smaller towns have things that bigger cities don’t have. We have a Dollar Tree here which is imo the mother of all dollar stores. Everything’s actually a DOLLAR and not just a denomination of a dollar. Having lived in both NYC and a small town I see pros and cons of both. It’s all in how you look at things and your outlook on things.
The same thing found at chain stores can be found at your local independent store. It just probably won’t be that brand name.

Miss Star - I was at Jack’s yesterday! :) After walking ALL OVER the fashion district to find russian netting for a birdcage veil. One store had only silver and gold, and the next 15 had exactly NONE. So frustrating. I finally found it, after missing my spinning class.

I live in a small town near Hilton Head Island and the closest Paper Source is four hours away! We do have a Michael’s but that’s about it. While I’m not technically engaged yet, I love dreaming about planning but my practical self is always stopped by the lack of any kind of wedding-related store anywhere near here.

I live in the Boston area and we have 3 Paper Sources very close to one another. BUT we have no Hobby Lobby and I want to go to one, just once, just to see what it’s all about.

great advice miss mj! i have a few paper sources within driving distances but so far i’ve sourced most of my materials from michael’s [gotta love those coupons!], target or office max because they’re cheaper than ps! you work with what you have and now with the internet, all the other stores are just a click away!

I think you’ve done fabulously! Sometimes you have to be more creative. Those of us who live in big cities take too much for granted and I think it stiffles the creativity.

Couldn’t agree with you more, though now that I live in a city with Paper Source, I have to say I do love going there and looking. Too bad I can’t afford a lot of it.

I know exactly what you mean, Miss MJ - I live in a town of 1500. We’ve had to get creative :)

Cheers to a college town! We also have the same picks but I’m liking the cost of venues and hotels (vs NYC and LA) and using our awesome college students (for pictures and ceremony music)… there is always a upside!

I agree with all you say and that what you get is what you make with what you have. If you don’t have inspiration and determination it doesn’t matter what you have in your arsenal of craft goods. I too am living a college town (top ranked college town) woot woot for Ithaca!

Completely agree! Rochester, NY has some stores, but I’m sticking to Joann, Michael’s, Walmart & the local craft store.

YEA for small towns. I have always been lamenting the lack of any decent craft stores here. The internet has been my best friend though. And I definitely agree with whoever said that we need more bees who do not live in major metropolitan areas.

I guess the good thing about planning a wedding in a small town is how much money you save! There isn’t that expectation that everything from your wedding is going to come from Saks or Nordstrom.
Also, the internet is not just a great way to buy stuff you need, but to get great ideas on how to be creative with what you have.
