Whether We’ll Weather the Weather!

September 9th, 2009 @ 5:32 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

Hi Hive!

Meet Miss Bear Cub: Professional Amateur Meteorologist!

The forecast for the Pacific Northwest US over the next few weeks is:

I don’t know. :)

But I do have a few tricks up my sleeve! Enter the Four Three Horsemen of precipitation and cold fronts:

Accuweather
As the name suggests, this must be the “accurate” weather forecast! I’ve been checking accuweather for their long-range (15 day!) predictions.

accuweather

So far, so good - sunny and clear! For coastal Oregon, this is a near miracle. But the forecast could change tomorrow!

That’s why there’s…

Weather.com

C’mon, you know you use this one. It’s in the name. Even my dad uses this one. Standard, normal, not-too-daring in their predictions, yet just-enough of a sneak peek into next week!

weather.com

But meh… I wanna know about my wedding weekend now! Me! Me! Me! No! No! No! … No rain!

And sheesh weather.com - mostly sunny? Partly cloudy? Sounds like someone needs to grow a pair!

And finally, there’s ol’ reliable…

NOAA
This is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They know their poop. They’re also really really conservative with their estimates. (7-day forecast? How passé.)

noaa

This is good when you want accuracy (in your face accuweather!), but not-so-hot when you’re a bride to be wishing to predict the cold fronts for oh, I don’t know … ROMANCE AND MARRIAGE! Gawh, NOAA!

Let’s get real - no one can accurately predict the weather more than about 3-5 days out. That’s why every day now I’m checking these three sites - one for reliability, one control group, and one to toy with my mood.

Have you gained a new hobby in forecasting the weather, conveniently near your wedding venue? What’s your favorite hocus-pocus precipitation predictor?

Me and NOAA - have become great friends especially as a south florida bride in the end tail of hurricane season. This weekends my bridal shower, then bachelorette cruise, then wedding, with of course (imcrazy) outdoor ceremony - ive been praying since last year for no rain come time to get the show going and more importantly no hurrcianes since we have out of town guests coming in as well :(

hey, I see you are getting married in Oregon the weekend of Sept 18-20. Just a word of warning for any of your travelers. The Portland Race for the Cure is downtown on that Sunday, the 20th, just in case there are any traffic problems. And the weather in Portland has been cold/overcast in the morning, but almost 80 by the afternoon!

For us, NOAA was the only accurate site! Good luck.

beings we live in part of the tornado belt here in nebraska we totally rely on NOAA. NOAA rocks and is always accurate. But anything can change with weather. I am weather stalking some to. Don’t want no rain. If you are having it on the Oregon Coast it will be a miracle for no rain, and I will pray for that for you. I lived in Oregon till about 3 years ago now and grew up there. Congrats and good luck:)

I totally weather stalked leading up to my wedding. I was on NOAA’s site every day checking!

I know how you feel Miss BC… my Mr. stalked the weather starting with our first-available 14 day forecast - he was worse than me! Our wedding was in a garden and I had been telling him for MONTHS that if it rained on our wedding that the day would be RUINED! (I was so mean like that). We had a carousel-shaped tent for backup but the big con in that was that I wouldn’t even get to walk down an “aisle” but would just be walking in from the side entrance :( Plus all that money wasted on flower arrangements and aisle runners and rose petals just made me sick :(

It didn’t help that the Farmer’s Almanac predicted 2 months before our wedding to be “WET and STORMY” the weekend of our wedding!

Luckily for house, we had a 70* sunny day with clouds shadowing every so often and 0% chance of rain - but I totally feel your pain! All I did the weeks before my wedding were stuff my face (stressful eater!) and check Weather.Com every 10 minutes to see if it updated!!

I am a nervous wreck right now, as I have been also checking Accuweather every 30 seconds, and looking for any other long-range predictions for weather in my area. Yesterday, we were golden with Sun and Clouds, 75 degrees. Today on the other hand, Accuweather says T-Storms late in the evening and humid! Crap! Happy Sunny Weather Dance, please for 09-19-09 on the East Coast!

I totally stalked the weather before our wedding. When they predicted 60% for rain the week before, I emailed the coordinator and told her we needed a plan to force the rain away - you know what? The rain went away (I like to think I have that much power) :) Good luck - everything will turn out great.

Weather.com is soooo unreliable, especially in the Pac NW. I grew up up there, and believe me, it’s pretty useless. I say stick with the other two and don’t let weather.com mess with you!

I work for the department that feeds NOAA all their weather data! I’ll see what I can do about making sure you have gorgeous not-too-hot not-too-cool sunshine-y weather!

I’m holding my breath too, @Mandy & @Pixieduster! I’m having an outdoor 9/19 wedding on the East Coast (what was I thinking?!?) I’m the oposite though, I know I can’t change the weather so I have been avoiding it at all costs! Everyone has been asking me if I’ve checked the 10 day forecast yet and they want to try and tell me what they’re predicting but I’ve been doing my best to avoid it! I don’t want to hear the weather report until that morning, because we all know it can change by the hour!!!!

Have you tried Weather Underground, http://www.wunderground.com? It’s my personal favorite for looking over historical weather! I know that my own wedding date (11/28) has a 60% chance of precip in my region based on historical data. . . as long as it doesn’t snow, I’ll be happy! It’s also good for honeymoon planning - for instance I found out what Jamaica will be like in December!

I am obsessively checking weather, as well. Luckily, the wedding is right here, where we live so we can make a pretty good prediction. But we all know weather can be completely unpredictable, esp. in Florida!

tehehehe … this post had me giggling at my desk! thanks! I sometimes have a tendency to do this anyway whenever a big event comes up - so I can’t IMAGINE how I’ll be for my wedding day!

I downloaded every weather related app onto my now-husband’s iPhone. He may or may not have been ready to kill me :)

Apparently our super secret move was the “bring your umbrella so you know it won’t rain” thang. Four days out, they were saying 80% chance of rain, so we hit the dollar store for brellies to hand out.

Not a drop.
