Married Legally

September 10th, 2009 @ 6:24 pm by Mrs. Moonbeam

wedding

We had our civil ceremony mini-wedding in July, and it was quite enjoyable. We were at Point Dume in Malibu. We experienced some huge waves and it was a bit overcast. Fog doesn’t look as good in pictures, but it would have been sweltering in the sun.

Then we headed to Duke’s Malibu for some yummy lunch, followed by some fantastic bundt cakes made by my Uncle Jim. They were chocolate and lemon poppy seed.

It was just the casual, low-key day that we wanted. Now it’s on to the BIG day in November. The guest list will be approximately 10 times the size of our July wedding. Oh boy!

Did you have 2 separate days of celebration? What made you choose to celebrate twice?

ooh a beach ceremony!

we’re planning on two ceremonies at the moment. the boy’s dream wedding has always been a small, intimate wedding [just him and the wife] on a beach and then a bigger one with family and friends, since he thinks if a wedding were about the couple, then it’d be just the couple. otherwise, it’s more about the families.

i didn’t have a dream wedding, just wanted a big party so this was the best combination for us!

Did I miss it when you discussed the reasoning behind two weddings? A friend of mine had one in Central America and one in the UK because her and her fiance’s family were spread around worldwide…super complicated.

The one in Malibu looks great!

@jmc: We had two because I needed health insurance and rather than just do the courthouse we did the beach ceremony, because he always wanted to get married while barefoot on the beach. And now I get the big, family one in Texas also.

Yes! We will be doing two as well! My finace has been commissioned as a Navy JAG officer and has been granted a 1 year deferrment to fulfill a prior committment to a judge so sometime btwn April and July before he goes off to training we’ll be doing the civil ceremony thing. then about a year later in the summer of 2011 we’ll do the big celebration. we are currently trying to plan the civil ceremony- we are keeping an eye on wknd airfare getaways!

I love that you had bundt cake. You’re right to make that first day special.

My fiancee, oops, husband did not have health insurance so we tied the not last weekend at city hall. It was just him and I. It was perfect! I cried my eyes out during the civil ceremony. I did not think I would be so touched by what the judge said during the ceremony.

So sweet! You get the best of both worlds; a quaint ceremony with those closest to you and a big party. Love it!

I like the fact that you both were able to get what you want. Planning my own wedding taught me so much about compromise. And sometimes it’s HARD stuff!

We’re going to do one earlier in the year for health insurance and other reasons then a big wedding in March. I really want a small, intimate ceremony.

Your post made me even more excited about doing two ceremonies. I never would have thought about doing two ceremonies until I realized, just a few days in to planning, how much compromising I would have to do when planning this wedding. I want our wedding day to be just about the two of us, not what everyone else wants, and having that first private ceremony will allow just that.

My fiance and I want a small wedding, but I have a big family, so we’re borrowing the same idea. We’ll have a small wedding in our hometown in May, to be followed later in the summer by a reception with my cousins and aunts and uncles. It was the only way to keep our guest list under sixty.
