We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.

Packing Up Your Wedding?

Packing Up Your Wedding? : wedding decor Moving moving-

Moving is never an easy task. I’ve moved more than 10 times in my life, but only once before to a different country—back then, I was only 7 years old and I could not understand why I had to leave all of my toys here in Chile. Well now, 20 years later, I KNOW!!

I’m at the point where I need to start packing so I can know the weight/size of all the things I need to carry or ship to California. I’m starting to wonder how much of my stuff I’ll be able to take there. I’ve had feedback form people at VisaJourney, but typically the people that move seem to be guys, and well, they can fit everything in two suitcases… CRAZY!

I’ll be carrying most of my wedding related items with me. Why? Because I’m a crazy bride. I’ve been putting so much work/love into my projects that I just can’t ship them, risking the chance that they get lost in the mail (Mr. Poodle and I have lost several presents/letters in mail over the last two years). The good thing is that because I know I have to travel with my projects, I’ve only been making small and light projects, so I can carry them easily.

Last weekend I finally finished everything and started packing up one of my dearest and most time-consuming projects: my origami flowers. These little guys have been with me for over two months. I was that crazy girl on the subway folding flowers! I folded every chance I could, and after many hours (and the help of my MOH, sister, and mom) we folded 1,025 purple petals, which equaled exactly 205 flowers. Because it will be easier to transport them as single petals, we didn’t glue them together. Hopefully I’ll get help for that task, too! I’m so glad the folding is over!

But now I have to think about a way to store the petals so they won’t get damaged.  At first I thought about just filling spots with them after I pack my clothes, but they are super delicate, so that was not an option.

{ So glad that I have one of my favorite companions with me during this task: Curly!  On the right is my fat bag full of purple petals }

Packing Up Your Wedding? : wedding decor Packing01 packing01

{ I slowly arranged them in piles of ten, then tied them into packages of 50 }

Packing Up Your Wedding? : wedding decor Packing02 packing02

{ I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have a pile almost ready to tie and having them explode in your face! So, I had to be careful not to wind them too tightly. }

{ Almost done! And si esos rulos en la izquierda son: Curly… LOL }

After packing these all, I really felt for destination wedding brides… how do you girls do it? Are you transporting your wedding gear for a far off destination? Do you have any packing tips for delicate items?

The petals are beautiful even when packed! As a DW bride, space and weight have been considered for every purchase…HOW do I get it there? is the question; always! You have it worse though, you are moving your wedding, and your life!

Oy! I don’t have to travel nearly as far as you, just 8hrs in the car. Knowing that I’ve been conscious of how many DIY projects I take on and how many of them will be easily transportable. The FI is a packaging machine, when we go on vacation he manages to pack so much into our one suitcase. But tips include using our clothes to wrap fragile items. Stuffing items in hollow crevices. ie. got a vase? It’s a perfect spot to stuff underthings into. =) When it comes to the wedding I’ll prob be using clothign to wrap a lot of things that go into our suitcase. But if it’s going to be fragile upon fragile prob packing popcorn. I should start saving packing bubble & popcorn NOW….and oh saving all cardboard boxes. Like ordering stuff online? rather than having to buy cardboard boxes, why pay for them if you don’t have to.

You did a great job compressing those petals. Wow! I can’t imagine packing wedding stuff for a plane ride; my car was jam-packed as it was!

I’m not sure about packing for your wedding…but I can help with packing for your life! (UK to USA=not fun)
The hidden crevices tip and saving boxes is a good one. Rolling up your clothes rather than folding them will give you more space in your suitcases. If you’re shipping clothes, first put them in a garbage bag and then suck out all the air with a vaccum cleaner…you’ll save space. If you are shipping books…do them in small boxes! Your back will thank you!
Are you bringing Curly with you? If you can afford it, buy him a seat…then you get two extra suitcases with you. Good luck!

Ms. Poodle! Wow! It can’t be easy to schlep all of your lovely and dear wedding creations AND your everyday personal items from one country to another. I feel for you! Well, I am just around the corner from your new town, so any help you need with the gluing/folding/diy tasks, my friend, don’t hesitate to ask! :)

Wow, I’m impressed! You really could be a wedding planner! I was happy that we only had to take all our wedding gear a few miles away, not thousands of miles!

Good job packing! Yes, we hauled everything down to Jamaica with us - didn’t ship a thing (Jamaican mail is not so reliable & DHL is very expensive!

We split it up amongst the wedding party & my family - they all took a little of everything to avoid having to declare anything in customs. It was a process, but it all worked out perfectly!

Awesome packing job. My honey suggested shipping all the programs, printed material, and laminated maps and I said I would be CRUSHED if they didn’t arrive. Those babies are going on the plane with me and my dress!

As a DW bride this subject is on my mind a lot. Especially with the airlines charging baggage fees. A lot of thought goes into any purchase and I’ve also kept it really simple to avoid having to pack too much.

más de 1000 pétalos? wow!!!! tus flores se van a ver preciosas! and this is just a thought, why don’t you put your petals in a plastic bag before you put them on the box? so they’ll be protected against water spills, or whatever that may wet your paper flowers…
