Mrs. Hot Cocoa's Picture
Mrs. Hot Cocoa, Boston/Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 31, JD/PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Medical Student Engagement Date: May 30, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: April, 2008 Venue: Ritz Carlton, Marina Del Rey About Me: I am a professional student by day and an amateur cupcake taster, bargain shopper, and wedding planner by night. I am obsessed with NPR, the Food Network, paper, dance shows, Anthropologie, post-structuralist theory, Weddingbee!, "The Office," and celebrity gossip. When not procrastinating from my dissertation, I spend time catering to Jellyby, our overly anxious shih tzu, and getting to know Mr. Hot Cocoa. We have only been dating for fifteen years, so it's like I'm in love with a stranger! From the East Coast, we are planning a Jewish-Chinese Extravaganza in L.A., where we both grew up.
About Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Hellooo (shy wave)! I’m Mrs. Hot Cocoa, and I used to blog here. Sorry I disapparated into the void (a.k.a. the new house we just bought and moved into). After a month of constructing IKEA furniture with unpronounceable names and learning to do homeownerish things like mow the lawn and fix the boiler, I’m back to pick up where we left off: bride and groom portraits.

1

I know, I know. NOT exciting. But I thought I’d let you in on the secret of what actually was happening while we were shooting our seemingly oh-so-romantic portraits.

2

Here’s a typical bride and groom photo: I’m looking dreamily into the distance, while Mr. HC seems to be adoringly nuzzling his beautiful bride.

Right.

3

Here’s what’s actually happening during this shot: We plop down on a couch on the hotel patio, behind two (very nice and accommodating) strangers who are enjoying a mid-day snack of overpriced s’mores. Our photographers interrupt the romantic tete-a-tete these people are sharing and ask them to duck to get out of the shot, which they do without (audible) complaint. Meanwhile, embers from our fire pit are flying into my veil, and I’m beginning to feel a bit like a s’more myself. That faraway look in my eyes? That’s me imagining the headline on the LA Times the next day: “Hotel Destroyed After Bride Combusts.”

4

Here’s another bride and groom portrait: I’m still looking dreamily into the distance and affecting an air of hauteness. Mr. HC is just supposed to look cool.

5

Of course, what is actually happening is this: Our wonderful photographers, in an effort to stage a romantic shot, say to Mr. HC, “Get closer to her. Smell her cheek.”

“Smell her cheek?” That’s one step removed from “pull my finger”.

Since we both have the sense of humor of a sixth-grade boy, Mr. HC and I find it hilarious. I am sure I whisper, “that’s what she said” under my breath, Mr. HC licks my cheek instead of smelling it, and we burst into ugly-face laughter.

Our poor photographers. They say (with either hopefulness or desperation), “How about we try something else?” I jump on the top of the banquette, and they snap away before we do something silly to ruin the shot.

6

Here’s one last example. They say to me, “Walk slowly so that we can capture the movement of your gown.”

7

Of course, instead of just walking like the runway diva I’m supposed to be, I giddily twirl like Julie Andrews on a diet of Pop Rocks and soda pop.

That’s not to say that when called upon, I wasn’t sometimes able to work it, ANTM style:

8

I’m totally smiling with my eyes, Tyra!

What are you and your spouse or fiance like in front of the camera? Awesome and fierce? Or dorky and awkward like us?

Kisses (and sympathies for having to deal with us) to Leigh Miller Photography, Luna Photography, and Della Chen Photography.

In previous episodes of the Hot Cocoa Chewish Wedding Recap Extravaganza:

- We had a welcome dinner.
- Hilarity ensued.
- I got prettified.
- We played games.
- Mr. HC got accessorized.
- We had a tea party… I mean, ceremony.
- I got haute
- I giggled and Mr. HC looked.

We’re so dorky and awkward too in front of the camera. Well my hubs is probably more comfortable than me. We depend a lot on our photographer to direct us in the shoot :) You look so, so pretty Mrs HC!

This was such a great post - I always sorta wondered what goes on behind the scenes of portrait-y pics like this!! I have a feeling we’ll be the dorky/awkward type :)

Those photos are so fun. I love that you can really tell how much fun you two have together. And that last shot is amazing. Way to work it, girl!

Definitely the dorky/awkward types. I’m glad we booked a pro for our small wedding, so that we’ll have had some practice by the big one. You guys look fab!

We are most definitely dorky and awkward, (add uncomfortable, and weird looking). We manage our best shots when we’re not trying which is why I hired a photojournalistic photographer…. hopefully they can work miracles!

I love the more for-real ones! Where you are laughing and enjoying each other. This is actually kind of what drives me nuts about wedding photography … that you are supposed to fake-it to get these so-called perfect shots that aren’t about who you are. The ones where you’re doing laughing for real is what you guys are really about … and you look great! It’s not “ugly face laughter.” What’s ugly about genuine laughter?

Whew! That last photo is complete HAUTE-ness! I wish I could harness my inner diva like that.

And I was laughing so hard at your descriptions because we had similar funny moments. One of our favorite pictures is of us sitting in the sand dunes and dreamily looking right into the camera. I believe I said something like “I think I have dune grass stuck up in my Spanx” and Mr PK said, “Dont worry I’ll take care of that later” Turned out to be a funny moment but a great picture.

I’ve said it before. I missed you!! So happy to see the new post!!! Pls keep them coming!

We’re definitely on the dorky side, and FI does not know how to relax in front of the camera, so the enagement photo session is key to his getting comfortable w/the photog.

BTW, mazel tov, on your new house and home!!

I love this recap - reminds me of our inability to follow our photographer’s directions during our engagement session! I’m sure when we get the proofs back we will just look awkward in every shot - oh well!

You both look fab and your love shines through!

Thanks for the encouraging comments. I’m practicing my zoolander face in the reflection on the computer screen. ;-)

@PrettyKitty: You’re harnessing your inner diva in that fab bio photo!! And the sand dunes scene is so exactly what would have happened with us.

@brendaman: Thanks! I’d have slacked off for a few more days if it weren’t for your kind comment last week!

Your pictures are stunning!!!

We’ve only had engagement shots… however we are totally awkward and dorky- our photog told my fiance to “act like james dean” and the poor boy tried so hard, but was apparently pouting the whole time. it was hysterical.
