Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Cakes

September 11th, 2009 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Okay, for some reason I had a hard time finding inspiration for cakes that I like. I think that’s partially because I couldn’t decide if I wanted round or square tiers. I figured I would start searching and saving any that I thought appealed to me in some way.

Do you see that last one? It’s square and round!! Thus solving my dilemma of having to pick just one shape. All of these appear to have fondant on them, which I really don’t want.

So recently we went to a cake tasting and it was awesome, and obviously delicious. We are using Audrey for our cakes, and I couldn’t be more excited! I guess you’re probably wondering what we picked… well, the dilemma between the round and square layers continued up until I got to the tasting, but I did always have that square and round cake in my mind.

Well, so did Audrey. She drew some sketches for us and even had some styrofoam cake layers to help us see what it would all look like. We decided on doing one with a square bottom layer and 2 round layers on top. It will be smooth like that one above (but with no fondant). I’ll provide the ribbon, and our florist will provide some fresh flowers. We picked french vanilla with a vanilla buttercream filling and buttercream frosting on the outside. Now I’m searching for some square pedestal cake stands. I found this one from Crate and Barrel that I like, but there’s no harm in continuing to search.

And for the groom’s cake, we will have a cake with a picture stamp of Mr. Fro Yo’s favorite sports radio station on it. I told him I think it will look like we work at the radio station or that the radio station donated the cake, but this is the one thing that he’s wanted to pick out, and he’s actually really excited about it. So, I’m going to let it go. For this one, we went with double chocolate with chocolate buttercream and raspberry filling. Yum!

Did your groom have an odd cake request?

I just received that cake stand from crate and barrel last week from my registry! It’s really pretty :) It’s pretty big, but I’d make sure Audrey’s cake will fit!

My Mr. doesn’t care much for sweets, but I gave him free rein to design the cake. If it’s awful we have two chocolate fountains AND a sweet table included in our package so it’s all good in the hood! I’m with you, I HATE fondant, LOVE buttercream. I also like the round/square combo. We like anything that is “unexpected” for our wedding.

The last one rocks!

I wanted to do a super weirdo grooms cake–get this, a football field with the players being rottweilers and zombies wearing Rams helmets. It would have been HILARIOUS and a total nod to all weird things DH likes–football, rotties, the Rams, and zombie horror flicks.

He was not game, alas. LAME! I must make one for a birthday sometime when I have LOTS of time on my hands

Great inspiration, love the last one! The groom’s ask for so few things it’s hard not to give it to them.

@ tea: I’m right there with ya! That’s all my mister asked for too!

I am currently searching for just the right design for our cake too. I know I want square, and its going to be 3 layers with flowers seperating each layer, but I don’t know if I want smooth, or some kind of design on the cake, or what. erg.

Very cute!! I’m stuck between square and round, but I really don’t think I want to mix them like you are…but I can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Very pretty - i love the pics in this post. If costs allow, I am going with a ’scalloped’ type shape for the cake. Not round, not square, I needed it different.

If it gives you hope that none fondant cakes can be beautiful, the last cake you pictured (the round and square one) is not covered in fondant. (I’m a cake decorator and can spot fondant a mile away). It’s buttercream, with just the accents being fondant. I’m sure your cake will turn out amazing!

Those cake inspiration photos are so gorgeous! I love the simplicity of them. And Mr. Fro Yo sounds like me with his sports radio! lol

We are having a groom’s cake that incorporates the show Lost and the New York Giants. Luckily, our baker is a Lost fan so it should be great! I love the idea of mixing round and square!

Ooooh! I love that first cake. We’re having a cake buffet, but if we had a traditional cake, I would love something just like that one.

It is funny that all 3 of the Project Wedding cakes you referenced are cakes that I also bookmarked - and between The Knot and Project Wedding, I actually did not have that many saved! We’re design twins :)

Anyway… I had the same dilemma - round v. square, after much battle and no input from my groom we settled on square… it just felt more modern which fit better into our “modern meets vintage-charm wedding.”

I don’t know the dimensions of that cake stand you posted but I worry about the weight of the cake tipping over the pedestal, make sure to get your baker’s opinion on that if you haven’t already. I purchased this one from Save-On-Crafts that I will someday need to sell (because who needs a $80 cake stand?!): http://www.save-on-crafts.com/sq.html

I’m all for grooms cakes, but for whatever reason my FI was totally against it. Perhaps its because we’re having a smaller wedding. OR maybe its because he didn’t want everyone knowing his insane love for Captain America? lol
