The Engagement

September 11th, 2009 @ 8:23 am by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

I realized I haven’t even told you how the whole engagement happened. Well, sit back my friends, here begins the story…

Texas is a weird state when it comes to politics (in more ways than one, but let me bite my tongue), and we only have a legislative session every other year. During that time, I find myself much busier at work and a hell of a lot more stressed. Well, on our engagement day I was at the pinnacle of my stress level. I emailed Mr. Fro Yo to say, “Watch out, I’m in one of those moods.” He took it in stride and said we should spend a night with just the two of us and some sushi takeout from our favorite restaurant. I could immediately feel some of the stress melting away, and in true state worker fashion, I watched the clock tick by until it was time for me to go.

We did all the typical things we do after work: took doggie Fro Yo to the hiking trails, watched some stock (as in the stock exchange) programs on CNBC (for Mr. Fro Yo’s work), and watched Mr. Fro Yo take in an extraordinary amount of protein (he’s a big time work out guy, and he eats multiple cans of tuna and egg whites every day). Then we went to pick up our sushi. I stayed in the kitchen to feed our dog, and Mr. Fro Yo went to set everything up. He discreetly placed the ring in a California roll and covered it up with a napkin. I sat down hungry for some sushi and snatched the napkin right off. Underneath, I saw the most gorgeous engagement ring:

The Engagement : wedding proposal 331 _-33

I cried, and it was an ugly cry––mascara streaming down my face, red blotchy cheeks, yep. But he still asked. He didn’t get down on one knee; he just sat next to me, held my hand and asked me to marry him. Eventually I pulled myself together and said, “Yes!”

Our proposal was very “us”. Neither of us would have done well with a public proposal. There was one problem, though––the use of food in the proposal. I couldn’t eat! I needed to call everyone and tell them the news, but Mr. Fro Yo was hungry! He understood though, and sat by patiently as I shrieked with one friend after the next. And eventually, we were able to dine. Me with my shiny new engagement ring on my finger and Mr. Fro Yo with a big smile on his face.

Did you have an at-home proposal? Was it on a special night, or, like ours, a night like any other (made special, of course, by the proposal!)?

Miss Fro-yo! I love that story…we didn’t have an at-home proposal, but we did have the same vibe…a public proposal would’ve been quite disastrous (ugly cry, lol). We became engaged on the first night of a caribbean cruise, on the verandah in our stateroom, so yeah, kind of at-home away from home =)

Awwww, so sweet! I’m almost a little surprise my FH didn’t use sushi as part of the proposal since it’s his favorite food in the world and we eat it at least twice a week….He proposed to me in our teeny tiny little studio that is our first real home together, with a poem and flowers….Simple, sweet and perfect! AFTER the proposal was another story tho…We walked to a restaurant near our house and inside were about 35 of our closest family and friends waiting to celebrate! *contented siiiiigh….

I know what you mean about not being able to eat - my FI proposed at a restaurant (but we were the only ones there) during the appetizer… I HAD been starving, but after the proposal, I was too excited to eat my dinner!

My FI proposed at my house on a regular night in the middle of the week. Totally unexpected and that made it that more special. Too bad Miss Sushi is taken. That would have been way to fitting. :o)

That’s such a cute proposal story! :) I think an at-home proposal is very sweet. My husband proposed outside at the beach at one of our favorite spots, but we were the only people there. I liked that it wasn’t in front of everyone–then no one else had to listen to me crying! :)

As another ugly crier, I am so glad ours was personal too. He proposed in the airport parking lot! He knew I didn’t want a at the gate over-the-top everyone staring proposal so he waited until it was just the two of us next to the car. He had intended to do it that night but he hadn’t seen me for a week and just couldn’t wait.

Your story is so cute and its so nice of him to have gotten everyone together! You must have been calling them and they already knew!

It was totally unexpected. I knew the ring was coming at some point, so every date night we had, I got dressed up and camera ready, and it didn’t happen and THEN he surprised me on a week day!! sneaky!

oh, how cute! we had an “at home” proposal as well… though it was immediately after i returned from the gym, sweaty sports bra and everything!

i totally get the ‘ugly cry face’ as well. i’m hoping that our photographer can sneak some un-ugly shots on our wedding day!

We went out to dinner and then came home and he proposed right there on the couch. I was in my pjs! I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

what a great proposal story! I love how all of the stories I have heard on the hive have all been so different and all so uniquely fit the couple perfectly!

So sweet! Ours was in a restaurant, and although I thought I would be mortified, everyone was so complimentary and kind, I can maybe overlook the awful make-up and ugly cry face that appears in half our photos :)

That is a great story, and that ring is gorgeous! We had an at-home proposal. I was always so back-and-forth about wanting it to be public or private. He was going to open his restaurant on a Sunday for date night - not abnormal. But apparently, at around 5:45 am, he was too anxious to wait and proposed in the dark next to the bed where I was sleeping. Hahahaha. In the end, it was perfect!

aww that is so sweet! And now I really want sushi!

He took me to a fancy restaurant overlooking Manhattan from the NJ side of the Hudson. So gorgeous! His SIL “invited” us to go there with her and her husband since it was on his law firm. Well the table was only set for 2 so my hunch was right! She was in on the lie to get me all dressed up on a Wednesday night and to a nice place (since I knew we wouldn’t be going to such an expensive place for no reason!). I couldnt eat a thing and ended up leaving my doggy bag behind bc I was so excited.
Still upset about that! It would have been great left-overs!

that is cute! california roll with a twist! my fiance proposed after we ran a freezing race in Swannanoa, NC. He ran the whole thing with the ring loose zipped in his shorts pocket! I was completely caught off guard and actually didn’t even understand what was really happening. He had made me promise to finish with him (which I found curious) but I never even imagined that that would be the reason! I cheated a little bit by going back to re-finish together… it was cute :) He had a “knee injury” as we walked away from the finish line. What was great was that it was public, but no one was watching us so it was very much still private in this beautiful setting next to a frozen lake surrounded by the mountains. He had asked my dad the night before when he had to go conveniently retrieve something from the car… and when he came back I was smiling and giddy just because I was so happy in general that he was FREAKING out thinking I had found the ring. Good thing he didn’t blow his cover then because that was really the best surprise I have/will ever have in my life! Congrats to you both and everyone else in this thread!

What a great story! He seemed so calm the whole day! My Fiance proposed last week, when we were visiting my family in New England from Seattle. After Dinner, in front of my Mom, Aunt, and Uncle. The perfect number of people and very special that my Mom was there. I lucked out and my Aunt saw the ring and started yelling “Jack get the camera” so I have great photos of the whole thing!

Well done Mr Fro Yo, Well done! PS I want Sushi now.
