Internet-less Wedding Planning

September 13th, 2009 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Star

Alright, I admit it. I have NO IDEA how they did it in the old days.

Wedding planning, that is.

Maybe it’s just because I’m young enough to only barely remember the days when I was forced to look things up in the phone book and the encyclopedia, but I cannot imagine how much harder it must have been to plan a wedding before there was the internet.

Because of our move, I have been internet-less for precisely 11 days and it has been k-i-l-l-i-n-g me.

We are just under a month out from our wedding, and I feel like I haven’t been able to get anything done in two weeks! I have had vendor emails go unanswered for several days (wow, I need to have more of their phone numbers handy!), I haven’t been able to Google things like “where to rent a projector and screen in NYC” and I couldn’t copy and paste the text of our chosen readings off of a website and into the ceremony document I was creating.

I had no idea how hard it would be to try to wrap up wedding planning without computer access for a few days until I was forced into it, which got me thinking about how one might go about planning a wedding if there were no such thing as an internet. Wait, people planned weddings before Weddingbee??

Maybe I sound like a spoiled Generation Y-er, but I don’t think I’m alone on this one! What would change about your wedding planning if you couldn’t use the internet?

is there a public library kind of close to you? they usually have computers with internet you can use. maybe keep a running list of questions you have and things to look up and then look it up when you get to the library.

i am the same way though. i would totally freak without the internet.

lol….its amazing how much things have changed since then..(no no I’m a youngin’ here)

Seriously, the net cut the ‘research’ for us instead of having to find out via phone or word of mouth

Oh my goodness! No idea how I would’ve planned my wedding without internet. It definitely wouldn’t have been as cool.

Without the internet, I probably would have ended up with two wedding colors, flowers by a florist, a hotel ballroom venue, and a standard wedding dress. As it is, the Internet has given me so many ideas beyond the cookie cutter wedding. In fact, I’ve spent the past 2 days working on ideas for the details of the reception, barely leaving my couch and my laptop!

I don’t know what I would do without my computer or the internet. Our guest list and addresses are stored in google docs, our potential vendors are stored in another database in the cloud, and everything is in a folder on my desktop. (my binder only has signed contracts and hard copies of important documents.) I don’t know how you are doing it.

I wouldn’t have found anything cool without the Internet, and like you I always emailed vendors rather than calling them. My wedding would have been very bland without the Internet because I wouldn’t have been able to hire anyone or copy things out of magazines.

I can’t even imagine planning without the internet.
When we moved into our new apartment a few months ago, we were without internet for 3 weeks!!! (Stupid AT&T, all they had to do was like flip a switch on the apartment’s board thing. I guess they cut their staff for doing that, so the wait list was forever long). I felt so disoriented and cut off!

NYU might rent out projectors/screens…or any other college nearby!

I am still early in planning, but I certainly wouldn’t have found my venue without a board posting a couple months ago!

Pictures!!! I don’t know what I would do without Google Images. In 2 weeks we are meeting with our wedding planner at our destination wedding and we have 4 hours to go over EVERYTHING. If we didn’t have pics of cake, flowers etc I would be lost!!

Well, I think back in the old days, they didn’t rely on internet because you could not - it wasn’t there! But realistically, I am guessing things would be a lot of the same, and my house would be messier with a lot more phonebooks and wedding magazines laying around! If I was internet-less at home, I’d probably have to park myself at Panera bread or somewhere with free wi-fi whenever I could!

Yes, I have been parking myself in Starbucks every couple of days, but it’s just not the same as having 24/7 access! Thank goodness Time Warner finally hooked us up!!

I was told that wedding planning was much easier before the internet. My seamstress, who is the nicest vendor I’ve had so far, told me that wedding planning is too stressful for us brides these days because of all this stuff we see on the internet. I completely agree with her. Everything could have been done much simpler and quicker without the internet!

@Andrea: Huh, I hadn’t considered the possibility that it might be easier without so much inspiration. My wedding (and others!) would probably have been less stressful, but definitely less unique!

You need a blackberry or iPhone! Lol. =) Seriously, I feel like I’ve been alienated from the world when I cannot be on the internet haha

@MsHymanRoth: Haha, I guess I was exaggerating when I said I didn’t have ANY internet. I have a Palm Treo that I use to read emails and get on facebook, etc., but it’s not really helpful for looking at websites with flash, writing long response emails, or printing out contracts!

Planning a wedding back in the days where there is no internet is just the same as now. Only a bit slow, but people do manage to get married.

I would be shelling out a lot more money to a wedding planner and wouldn’t be getting the wedding of my dreams for my budget :)

Planning from a distance, like I’m doing, would be a nightmare. I think, like Gator, I would have shelled out a lot more money for a wedding planner, and probably gotten a cookie cutter wedding. There is NO WAY I could have come up with so many cute ideas for this party on my own!
