Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Cake Stands

I emailed Marie Gabrielle to see if they provide a cake stand for our wedding, and they don’t. I know you can rent one from the place you get your cake from, but typically it’s at least $50, and I could buy one for that price. Also, I don’t think I want the traditional large, silver cake stand that are usually seen at weddings.

Don’t get me wrong, they are gorgeous, but I think I want something a little different.

So, I started looking and found lots of cake stands that I think are great! These are from Martha Stewart for Macy’s, and she has round and square ones. So whatever I decide on, she has a stand that can accommodate it.

Then I found these beauties on Potluck Studios and they come in so many different colors that I could pick the perfect one to match our wedding.

Although I’m not sure how practical these are. I don’t want our cake to topple over, but I love them. And best of all, they would be ours after the wedding.

What’s your favorite source for cake stands?

I own one of the Martha Stewart white, round cake stands - it is lovely and simple, but also quite low to the table. In case you want to add a little height to your cake, you might want to keep that in mind.

I’m going to DIY cakestands ala Mrs Cheese (http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/08/11/yummy-yummy-for-my-tummy/) but then again, we’re doing cupcakes and other desserts in a buffet!

I know this sounds silly, but we made ours (we had multiples) using about $20 of supplies from goodwill. We used hot epoxy to glue glass candle holders (votive and sticks) to cut glass serving platters. They turned out great, and cheap!

How about eBay or local restaurant suppliers?

Whitney Smith Pottery on etsy….her cake stands are GORGEOUS! I recently placed a large order from her for the upcoming fall/winter festivities. I ordered her poppy plates and bowls, leaf platters and I’m hoping to add her trio of cake plates to the order. Everything she does is beautiful though! Her’s a link to some of my favorites of her’s! http://thelifeaccounts.blogspot.com/2009/07/gorgeous-poppies.html

Hey Miss Froyo, FI and I are planning on incorporating his grandmother’s antique Fenton milkglass cakestand (like the one shown here: http://www.mccullohantiques.com/pict1024.jpg) which is 12″ in diameter and we have been meeting with cake vendors in the Dallas area, who say that it isn’t a problem for our 120 people guest list as long as we go for taller-than-usual cake layers or double up one of the layers.

Local antique stores are definitely awesome for shopping for cake stands, as well as Ebay.

You should make sure to talk to your baker about whether a pedestal stand is sturdy enough for your cake. I am having a four tier cake for about 150 and I know that I can’t use one because the cake is going to be too heavy!

It would definitely depend on the type of cake you have - the bottom ones look nice but I’m not sure I would trust them on any more than 2 layers! Salvo, Goodwill, and yardsales are always a good bet-maybe even checking/putting an ad on craigslist wouldn’t be a bad idea!

We are using a black iron plant stand from the Home Depot - only $12!

@MrsLifeAccounts: Thanks, I will definitely check it out!
@donnaaries: Great, my cake lady said that it shouldn’t be a problem, so I feel good about it!

I’ve been collecting cake stands since I first started baking in my teens… In Canada the best place to get cake stands is at a place called Home Sense. Stores rarely keep the same items & cute stuff goes really fast. I’m there weekly checking out the kitchen stuff.

I’ve been searching the antique fairs seeing if something catches my eye. I like different.
