Mr. Chick’s Suit: Trial One

September 16th, 2009 @ 5:32 pm by Miss Chick

Thanks to awesome readers from this post, Mr. Chick and I had more of an idea of what kind of suit and which designers he could try. We went to Brooks Brothers to try on the Black Fleece line, Burberry, and Saks 5th Avenue. Just to try things on, of course! I’m (mostly) a smart shopper, so I want to wait for sales/coupons. Maybe around Christmas time we can go out and purchase something…

First, we went to Brooks Brothers, of course.

Mr. Chick tried on a light gray suit:

1

2

With his signature flip flops, of course. Don’t worry, he’s not wearing them to the wedding. I hope.

Even though I think Mr. Chick looks very handsome in this suit, something about the fit of the shoulders is weird to me. We chose the Black Fleece line because he has a more slender build, but I guess his shoulders are a bit bigger than I thought! He has been working out a lot at the gym for the last couple of months. Anyway, I think it should look something more like this:

3

Images courtesy of CW

Okay. so I’ve cropped out Joanna Garcia in two of these pictures (she annoys me, I don’t know why!) and it probably wasn’t necessary to post three pictures of Nate to get the idea, but what is a Gossip Girl to do?

Next he tried on a gray pin-striped suit in the same style, a la Roger Sterling:

4

5

Again, very nice, but I think the shoulders need to be sharper looking.

When we were about to leave, I asked Mr. Chick ever-so-casually (yeah right), if he would just put on the light khaki suit jacket, you know, just for kicks. He obliged begrudgingly:

6

Here he is, smiling sheepishly, because he realizes that he looks damn good in it despite his previous protests against wearing light colored suits. That’s right ladies—we are always right!

I believe these were his precise words: “Wow! I look… GOOD!”

Here he is, strutting his new found realization:

7

And then I asked with a triumphant smile, “Want to try on the matching pants?” Him: *sigh* “Yes.”

8

9

10

11

He loved it!! AHA! Ahahahhaha!!! I knew light colors would look great on him!

But enough about me. Back to more suits. After Brooks Brothers, we went to Burberry just to see some other options:

12

13

I like the cut of this suit a lot more, but according to Burberry lady, they don’t have it in any other colors, nor are they planning on making it in any colors. Hurummph.

And then we went to Saks to try on some Dolce & Gabbana suits (ballah!):

14

15

I like the cut, but the pockets look odd to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where we can get a Burberry cut in a light khaki/off-white color?

How did you and your guy pick out his suit? Did you have any say in what he picked?

Oh, you’re right about the shoulders — his are broad and angle down. The the Burberry looks the best as the cut of the shoulder lifts them with pads that pique up! Nice! If you can’t find a light colored suit by Burberry, you could always get the Brooks Bro one tailored to include the padding?

My fiance and I have begun the search for a slim fitting light colored suit as well! A family friend works for Escada and he gave us a great tip. Apparently sometime in late fall Ben Sherman is going to launch a new line of really fashionable men’s suiting. He got to preview some of it last month and said it was really modern with a slim European cut. So, my fiance and I are waiting for that to come out, that is unless we happen across something perfect beforehand!

Also, I used to work for J.Crew and the light-colored spring suiting usually comes out by the end of February. My fiance just got a dark colored Ludlow suit for some events we have over the fall and winter, and it’s really nice and slim.

@Mrs. Perfume: Good idea! I didn’t know you can do that! Thanks!
@Honeybird: I shall wait for the Ben Sherman line then! That is awesome! I love Jcrew. Hopefully something will work out!

I would buy a suit with plenty of shoulder room and take the picture of the Burberry along with the suit to a good tailor.

Has he tried Hugo Boss? I don’t know what colors they come in but my fiance has huge/broad shoulders and the Hugo Boss fit him great. Also try Calvin Klein, he had good luck with those suits too.

I agree with Miss Carmel, I’m a fan of the first suit, though he looks snazzy in all of them!

We were so irritated by the whole suit debacle that we settled for tuxes, though we aren’t thrilled about those, either.

The Burberry suit looks great. The shoes could use a little work, though ;)

Too funny that guys try on clothes with the “wrong” shoes too! I do it all the time and whoever’s with me always laughs. Like when you’re shopping in winter for a dress and you try it on with socks…

Wow, you are so much more tolerant of shoes than I am. I have a fit if boyfriend wears his weird pseudo-crocs out!

The Burberry suit is the best fit for Mr. Chick. I also love the color of the first suit he tried on. Ugh Burberry! One color, really?

Love the sandals! I actually agreed to let Mr. S wear some, but in the end he chose some closed-toe boat shoes.
We bought Mr. S’s light-colored suit from JcPenny on clearance. It looked very good.

I think it’s really cute that he stands like Nate…. He looks great in all of them, but the Burberry one is my fav.

To my eye, it’s the cut not the color. I think the slimmer fitting European style suit fits his build better. If you’re looking at suits like Burberry and D&G, would you considered bespoke?

Yay! Suits! I just bought a Hugo Boss Pasolini suit. Originally we wanted the Jam Sharp, but I was able to sweet talk the sales lady at Macy’s into hooking me up with a FAT discount even though the black suits weren’t on sale! (I’m talking 50% discount here - without any coupons!) Our option was a Burberry suit as well… it looked lovely on him, but was $600+ more than we could afford to spend.

Hickey Freeman. Such nice suits. He should definitely try a Hickey Freeman suit. I know they carry them at Nordstrom.

I think my favs are def the lighter suits on him.
Question: Was ALL these trials on ONE day? I’m pretty sure by suit 3 the FI will complain of sudden “back Pain”. Hehe. Although he’ll still begrudginly continue trying ‘em on. =)

i think the khaki suit looks great, definitely a fan of the lighter suit! Can’t go wrong with the adidas sandals either, I definitely had a pair of those back in the days of high school soccer!

Good job! Mr. Chick was definitely a trooper! And the khaki suit looked excellent but maybe it was just the cut and the fabric, ya know? The lighter color does seem to brighten him up a bit, though!

We looked for similar suits and definitely found a lack of khaki coloured suits in general. At the one suit store the salesman told us menswear usually gears up a couple months before Christmas and mostly Fathers’ Day (so like March). We ended up getting a gray suit from H&M! Their suits were surprisingly nice, slightly more affordable and made my fiance feel hunky. :)

Ahahah! I did not realize he has the same post in every picture! That is hilarious!
@jhguba: That is a good idea!
@krissycake: Woo he is going to love you for saying that!
@RecessionistaBride: I think they might have had two colors: dark gray and darker gray. Eye roll!
@SweetLemon: Aww thank you!
@Gerbera: Haha! They WERE all in one day! But he’s a fast shopper. There were no discussions, it was yes or no!
@Brianalaura: Darn I wish we had an H&M here! Stupid Houston is behind the times!
@BA: I will look for those for sure! Thank you!

@Shar: Wow! How did you sweet talk her into doing that! That’s some mad negotiation skillz you’ve got there!
@Danielle: Bespoke? I need to google that!
@abrideagain: Ahahah! I hate when that happens! Or when you take the socks off but you sitll have the little lines around your ankles from the socks!
@KMSull: I have to pick my battles, and after ten years, I have to let this one go! Hahaha!

You could always find a tailor in your area to make the suit in the color you want. My dad has a guy based in TX that made his suit for my wedding… PM if you’re interested, I will give you his contact info :)

Is he wearing a two button or a three button?

Brands are REALLY different in cuts…your best bet is to go to a high end department store and work with one of the older men. They are super familiar with the cuts of each brand and the variations. For ex. my husband is 6′4″, but looks good in athletic cuts, but only certain brands. Trust me…the older guys are an untapped resource!!
