Miss Lamb's Picture
Miss Lamb, Norfolk Age and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Engagement Date: January 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera House About Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

Just like a Frat Party

September 17th, 2009 @ 3:34 pm by Miss Lamb

Did you ever go to a fraternity party where the theme was something like Golf Pros and Tennis Gals* (*that not quite appropriate word for women)? CEOs and secretaries? Romans and Goddesses?

Sometimes, I feel like a wedding is just a big theme party. In all of my online puttering about, I’ve seen some fabulous and some not so fabulous themes.

Some themes are all out:

Source

I was thinking of one in particular where the theme was Victorian magicians - there were parlour tricks, and everything was beautifully dark and twisty and elegant - all at the same time! I thought I had seen it on Once Wed or Snippet & Ink, but now I can’t find it. Anyone remember this one and can refresh our memories?

Some themes are gorgeously subtle:

Deciding on our theme was difficult. Before we were engaged, I was telling my Lamb Lovie that it would be so fun to have a football themed wedding, with my beloved Redskins and his beloved Giants taking each other head on in a story that ends in romance. I pictured it all!

The Redskins garter:

The football helmet groom’s cake:

Table number jerseys of our favorite players:

We could even have the reception during a big game!

My Lamb Man thought this was the cheesiest idea I’d ever had.

In the end, I’m happy with the subtle Victorian verging on Deco vintage theme that we chose. But if anyone has a football themed wedding, will you invite me? Especially now that football season is upon us again, I find myself fantasizing about each bridesmaid wearing a dress in their favorite team’s colors and having stadium food served at the reception!

Have you ever been to an extreme-themed wedding? Was it as fun as I’m imagining it in my head?

i may or may not have a subtlety pug themed wedding :) Things like: pug cake toppers, our pugs will be in pre-pictures, our bottles for the champagne toast have pugs on the label, our pugs are on our STD’s… etc. But all done tastefully!

I WOULD LOVE A FOOTBALL THEMED WEDDING AND YOU ARE SO INVITED!!! :) Of course mine would be Steelers and my sweeties would be the Pats, so they’d probably be some sort of confrontation before the day was over!!! LOL

My fiance is a DIE HARD Redskins fan, and I was completely shocked when he dismissed the Redskins jersey table number idea. I thought he would be so into it, but he said he wants to “keep it nice” ha!!!

I went to a Renaissance wedding–we all went to the local Renn faire the day before, and the first dance was from the period. The bride sewed outfits for the entire wedding party, plus a few friends.

I might be alone on this it seems, but I’m with Mr. Lamb, I don’t like the football theme. (Giants fan here BTW). Maybe for the rehearsal dinner or something else but not the wedding.

I really wanted a March Madness themed wedding but the fiance said no. I think it would have been a blast!

Miss Lamb,
I think the victorian wedding you are talking about might be this one:

I love the school themed ones. With chalkboards, yellow pencils, apples, so cute for teachers in love.

nope, none of the weddings i attended had a theme. i didn’t even know weddings even had themes until i started reading blogs!

though a coworker and his wife worked in their mutual love of baseball into their wedding. they had peanuts and cracker jacks as their favors! as much as a sports junkie as i am, i wouldn’t push for a sports themed one. that’s more me than the boy.

Woo Giants! Mr. Lamb has great taste in football teams :) My best friend is having her wedding in Buffalo, NY (where her family is from) and they’re doing a super cute day-after brunch watching the Bills game!

My friend didn’t use the football theme for her wedding this past January… but they did wave their Terrible Towels as they entered the reception hall. It made their entrance extra fun for the guys… and it worked because by the end of their honeymoon the Steelers had another Superbowl Win!

Oh my God, I LOVE the Redskins! FI would have never gone for a football wedding (although my family would have loved it!), though. I do always tell him that our children will “be raised Redskins” and someday we’ll have to get satellite tv, so we can get the NFL Ticket and never miss a game!
I’m always so excited when I hear/meet/catch a glimpse of a Skins fan!

In an attempt to get my FI amped about planning, I asked if he would like for our colors to be blue and gold/yellow - for the SD Chargers! I even found a wedding online that had a chargers groom’s cake!

He, too, thought it was the cheesiest thing I’ve ever come up with. *sigh*

I know a girl who had her wedding during this past USC/Ohio State game… she was a really excited buckeye, until they lost! Think of that damper on a wedding day :(
I’m so glad you’re going with the Victorian theme, it will be so much fun!

@HugsKissesLadyBugsBride: The Steelers are my second favorite team, and Mr. Lambers too! I think it’s what keeps us from killing each other during football season ;)
@pinklady: @mcnetn3: Yes ladies! You found it! I bookmarked it so I don’t lose it again - what eye candy!@Miss Moonbeam: Me gusta school supplies!!! If I were a teacher I’d be all over this.@MsPeanutButter: A halloween wedding?!?! I sooo want to go to one of these!

Although I’ve been to a bunch of theme/costume parties, I’ve never been to a theme wedding. Even though we got married on our college alma mater’s campus, we didn’t want it to be too obviously a “Michigan theme wedding”. We had a couple of small touches (I wore a UM garter and we played the fight song as our entrance song at the reception), but we stayed away from the school colors in our color scheme.

We’re not into sports…. but we think bowling is fun (we’re not major bowlers in any way shape or form) But one of our favorite movies is The Big Lebowski….. so we’re thinking of having the reception in a bowling alley.
There’s a bowling alley by our apt that’s new…. so it’s clean and well maintained!!… and we’re just gonna reserve as many lanes as we need and ask them to make us tons of pizza, wings, mozerella sticks, potato skins, we’ll have drink tickets for the bar, and people will bowl, drink, eat, laugh, and the pictures will be awesome!
I’ll bring in our wedding cupcakes. I’ve got to figure out how I’d like to decorate the tables and booths - it might be us themed, it might be movie themed, it might be bowling themed, but we don’t feel the need to go too hardcore with a bowling theme - it’s in a bowling alley - no need to hammer in a theme any further than that.

My cousin got married a few months ago - very traditional - in a huge hotel, large dance floor etc. Hardly anyone danced. But everyone had great conversations.
I was trying to plan a backyard wedding… but It was hard for me to justify spending so much money on renting tables, chairs, linens, a dance floor etc…. but thinking about having to set up or asking people to set up - made it feel really stressful - I didn’t want to deal with a lot of prep time.
My fiance likes wearing bowling shirts - a la Chandler from Friends…. so he’ll wear a bowling shirt - I might wear a cute vintage ‘50 or ’60’s dress. We’ll have our first bowl.
We might have team bride and team groom - and see if we can have a friendly competition between our families for best score.
My mom - who is normally super traditional has announced that she has to have her own custom bowling shirt with “mother of the bride” embroidered on the back. It’s hilarious.
But that’s who we are - we are casual comfortable people. We don’t want people to stare at us the whole time - we want people to have fun with us. Everyone we’ve told has said - “that sounds like so much fun” or “that’s a wedding that I want to go to.” It’s kid friendly too. (which my little nieces will enjoy) :) A few people have been judgmental - but who cares - you don’t like it - don’t come —
We’re still working on the location for the ceremony though —

@Deets: A bowling wedding?! That’s so awesome! I think I would really like to be a guest at a wedding like this. I’ve been to 100 traditional weddings. I’m ready to mix it up!
@annie360: LOVE it! It’s even two couples from Norfolk! “I yabba-dabba-do!”
