The Need for Closed-Toed Shoes

September 17th, 2009 @ 3:59 pm by Mrs. Moonbeam

Long story short; I ran a half marathon at the end of June and now I’m missing half my right big-toenail and half of the left big-toenail is still bruised. When I ran a full marathon my feet were fine, but something about this half just ruined my toenails. And the bummer is that it’s taken 2.5 months for the nails to almost get halfway there, and I don’t really have a full 2.5 months left until our wedding.

This leads me to my need for closed-toed shoes. And since Mr. Moonbeam slouches, I’ll have to wear flats, too. (Don’t worry tall brides, I’m rocking some heels at the rehearsal!) Closed-toed probably makes sense for our fall wedding, but I’m kinda bummed to be forced to limit my shoe options, and at some point I might want to take them off, even if they are flats. Boo to ugly bridal toes! But YAY to fun bridal shoes. Maybe I’ll thrive under the constraints of my search.

The Need for Closed-Toed Shoes : wedding shoes Purple01 These are fun, and I like the color, but they may not be snazzy enough for the big day.

The Need for Closed-Toed Shoes : wedding shoes Blue These would make quite a rockin’ something blue (which I don’t have yet).

The Need for Closed-Toed Shoes : wedding shoes Purple
And then there are these two pairs—the purple’s good, but…

The Need for Closed-Toed Shoes : wedding shoes Blue Ca

This blue might be perfect! I do have fears about online shoe shopping though, with size 10s I just can’t hit the order button. This might be a first.

Are you wearing flats for your wedding? What do they look like and where did you get them?

I really wanted flats, but if I alter my gown I lose all the beading at the bottom :-( I am getting sexay heels, and some kind of “platform flip flops” for when I just can’t take it anymore!

If they’re just your big toes and you’d like to wear some peep toes or sandals, I would run to Walmart and pick up a packet of fake toe nails! Well, actually, I’d just rock the torn up toe nails and proudly tell everybody I was a bad @$$ runner :) You have some great options picked out already though!

This may sound totally weird…but they do make fake toenails that you can glue on. My left toenail has been missing for years and I use the falsies…just glue one right onto my skin and it stays on for a week or so.

@alohababy28: I have the same issue, girl! I planned on flats, but my gown’s lace at the bottom prohibits them… :( Now I’m searching for some fun (but still really dressy) wedges. No luck yet!

Try to find a place that has free returns and then maybe you won’t be so nervous about ordering them online…you could even order more than one style or size if you are rushed for time.

Being a fellow runner - I’ve had the same problem before (it’s likely that your shoes were too old or that your socks were too loose). I too have either sported my ugly toes proudly, but depending on the occasion I’ve requested at a nail salon that they put acrylic on my toe nails (yes, they do it for toes too!) and then get a great French pedicure that lasts FOREVER, forever, forever, forever, forever… (Sandlot :))

P.S. I have the Calvin Klein flats in black and they are beyond comfortable!! I’d highly recommend them!

Funny, I was about to post the same suggestion for fake toenails. yes, Mrs. Deviled Egg posted about them a while back and I immediately picked up a pair at my local CVS for like 3 bucks since I’ve had the same issue when I run. Cut to the day of the wedding my MOH had a black toe nail from her first 10K so we popped those babies on her little piggys and no one was the wiser :)

I was so wary of posting about that, glad no one’s commenting about how grossed out they are.
@Miss_Carmel: I may have to make the leap into online shoe shopping now.

I’m wearing flats for my May 2010 wedding. I wear flats daily and I wouldn’t feel like myself in anything else. I found the perfect pair at Urban Outfitters and the tag inside the shoe closed the deal - it says “Fairytales Are True”. I got the sand colored ones and they are going to look very nice with my ivory lace dress. Here’s the link!

P.S.– They’re on sale!!!!

Ahhh, I’ve been trying to find flats too, but because my fiance is shorter than me. I ordered these, but I have not received them yet. I loved the idea of my shoes being my “something blue,” though.

I’m going with these. Cute, with the tiniest heel. And very comfortable, I had the black ones and then bought the brown to wear with my off-white dress.

Hey Moonbeam, I know it won’t help in time for the wedding but to make your nails grow faster you might want to start taking a biotin vitamin. Gross alert: I picked up a nail fungus in Asia, and my dermatologist prescribed it (along with meds) to help me get back to normal faster!

I really like the last pair!! But if you really dont want to limit your options I’d look into fake toes like the girls above me suggested.

Oh, are we going there with the toenails? When I a freshman in college, my dorm had an ice-cream-sundae night. I was so exicted with my sundae that I tripped running up the stairs, and banged up my toenail so bad that it soon fell off. Luckily, I was able to protect the ice cream (priorities) and did not spill a drop.

I think Zappos.com has very friendly return policies.

So funny about the topic. I had planned on wearing flats because I chose to get the petite length in my dress so I would have to spend a fortune altering it (sweet) but the pure torture and agony I have been going through to find a comfortable closed toe almost flat, 3/4″ is the max I can go. I have found tons of way cute flats, like no heel but the in between thing seems to be the worst.

I host a running club and running has been my passion since I was a kid but I am having a real problem now with my big toenail. I live in Denver so I do a lot of trail running which involves a lot of downhill. Your toenail can get black and fall off for many reasons but I know mine isn’t from old shoes (big no no in the running world) and never heard of socks being too big but thank goodness they have fake toenails.

I am now going to go out and try to find some peep toe flats so my big toe can stick out and not have to push against anything.

I have 35 days to my wedding and I never thought finding shoes would be soooooo stressful.

p.s. My FI hates peep toe shoes, oh well…. BOYS……..

i wore old navy flats at my wedding… they were navy blue with white polka dots and i LOVED them. still wear them all the time! yay for flats brides!

as far as being grossed out… my husband ran a marathon while we were dating and ended up losing four toe nails, i think. in addition, he had huge blisters that somehow surrounded his toenails… ah, running. :)
