Fondue Does Europe, Part 3: Venice

September 18th, 2009 @ 12:55 pm by Ms Fondue

Previously: Paris | Lake Como

We arrived in Venice on Wednesday, June 10, by train. We had decided that since we would only be in the city for a few days, we would just take our carry-on luggage and store our large suitcases. There was a luggage storage area in the train station, so that was our first stop.

With small bags in tow, we then tried to figure out how to get to our hotel, the Comfort Hotel Diana which was right off of St. Mark’s Square. We finally figured out which water bus we needed to take and climbed aboard. The trip down the Grand Canal was incredible.

We arrived in St. Mark’s Square and then wandered around looking for the hotel. The directions we had were meager, so we ended up asking someone to point us the right way. We finally found the hotel down a small alley.

After checking in and getting set up in the room, we decided to eat dinner. We went to a small restaurant right outside our hotel. I had pizza and Chianti, of course. This pizza was topped with basil and garlic.

The next morning, we started our sightseeing. Our first stop was St. Mark’s Basilica in the square.

After that, we went to the Doge’s Palace next door. Here we got to go over the Bridge of Sorrows, though we never went to see it from the outside.

Then we crossed the Grand Canal to visit the Accademia and Peggy Guggenheim art museums.

At the Guggenheim, we ate lunch. I had the most delicious ravioli! And Chianti. You wouldn’t believe how much my alcohol tolerance level went up on this trip.

There was a really cute American guy who was interning at the museum that was giving some history to the place, so we sat and listened to him for a while. Then we toured the exhibits and decided to head back to the hotel to cool off… except the only way to the Accademia bridge was flooded.

It didn’t look like the water level would be going down anytime soon, so we followed some other people’s lead, removed our shoes and socks, and waded our way to the other side. Despite Mama Fondue’s concerns, we DID NOT contract any sort of disease from doing this. ;) We did a little more wandering around, bought gelato, and then retired for the night.

The next morning, we grabbed a quick lunch at McDonald’s (I know; I’m ridiculous for going to Europe and then eating at McDonald’s twice). The fries at this one tasted more like the fries here than the ones in Paris did. Then we made our way back to the train station, recovered our bags, and hopped on a train to Florence. (To be continued…)

Overall, I loved Venice and I would really like to go back and spend some more time there, since we basically only had about a day and a half. The hotel was decent, although hidden away; it was also the most expensive of all the hotels we stayed in on the trip, though it was near impossible to find anything reasonably priced in a good location in Venice. The location was definitely the biggest plus of the hotel. Also, we didn’t do a gondola ride (*gasp*) since they are pricey, and I though better suited for a romantic trip. ;) Venice was also easily the most touristy of the places we went, and everyone we came in contact with spoke English.

Venice looks beautiful! It’s definitely on our list for a return trip to Italy! What was in the ravioli you pictured above? :-)

I also went to Venice (and all of Europe) did not do the gondola ride when I saw the price (but made sure to get a picture with a gondoleer) and ate at McD’s more than once (European food and drinks are SOOO expensive!). Looks like you had a great time though! were you completely overwhelmed by all of the pigeons in the central square? It’s crazy when you first walk up and see all 5 million of them!

I paid 65 Euro for a short gondola ride which was mediocre. My favorite part of our entire trip was taking the water bus up the Grand Canal at night back to our hotel which cost 2 Euro and was a great way to see things!

FANTASTIC photos! We stopped in Venice for our last leg of the trip, but I broke my camera part way through. Thanks for the memories!!! I think it was the time of year we went, but Venice was too crowded and touristy for us. You, however, make me want to go back and give it another try!

Wow - the photos look great and it looks like you saw quite a bit considering you were only there for a day and a half! The flood part is a little funny, I hope you both got a good laugh about it afterwards :)

I spent about 6 months in Italy a few years ago. When the girls I was with balked at the price of the gondola ride I STOMPED MY FEET (yes, STOMPED) and threatened them all if they didn’t pitch in. “When will we ever be here again?!” I whined. Four of us pitched in 20 euros each for the tab and piled into the gondola. It was a little after 10 PM and simply magical.

Venice was the most incredible part of our trip to me. Coming around the first bend in the Grand Canal and seeing the Rialto bridge, I burst into tears and couldn’t stop for at least 5 minutes. Venice literally took my breath away. It was akin to a religious experience, and I’m saying that with NO sarcasm.

@Mrs. Bruschetta: It was spinach and cheese! So good!

@jhguba: Haha, I was more amused with the people that kept taking photos with the pigeons like they had never seen one before. I guess I’m desensitized as we have plenty of them here in Nashville. :)

@pvaulter718: I was laughing about it the entire time. Especially when we got to the other side. There was no place to sit to put our shoes and socks back on until we got to one of the squares. People kept walking by wondering why so many people had their shoes off, lol.

@texaslawgirl: That’s exactly how I felt when I first saw the Eiffel Tower. I literally could not tear my eyes off of it.

Don’t be ashamed of the McDonalds thing. I think as Americans, we’re used to eating a mix of cuisines from day to day. When we were in italy a few years ago, it was amazing how badly we longed for McDonalds after so many Italian meals in a row. We’d pass a McD’s and seriously pine. So funny, because I’d never expect that. All the food we ate was delicious, but damn, I could have used some cuisine diversity! I think the Chinese and the Italians are infamous for not eating anything but Chinese or Italian food, respectively. I don’t know how they do it!

McDonald’s in France is forgivable (I’ve done it too) BUT McDonald’s in Italy where you have Margarita pizza and Chianti and gelato avaliable and for about the same price is terrible ;)
