Love in Grey and Yellow : the ABCs

September 18th, 2009 @ 8:27 am by Mrs. Joey

I know, I know. These recaps were promised 2 weeks ago, but I have a good excuse. My computer died and with it, I lost all of my bridal shower and actual rehearsal pictures, and some of our honeymoon pictures. I’ve been collecting pictures from friends and family so I could put together my recaps. Luckily, I had saved the really important pictures on a disk.

But now, on with the show… I mean recaps.

Sister Joey (also my MOH) lives in Italy where her husband is stationed. Due to a number of factors, she couldn’t come home to Seattle until about 10 days before the Joey wedding. Mama Joey had offered to throw me a bridal shower so sister Joey wouldn’t have to worry about it 10 days before the wedding, but sister Joey was not having any of it. She said she had a plan.

Oh, what a plan! The theme she came up with was the ABCs of Marriage.

She assigned all the guests a letter of the alphabet and asked them to come up with a gift that started with their assigned letter. She also had over 26 edible treats – one for every letter of the alphabet. I couldn’t believe that she pulled off a shower for 25 guests in 3 days!!! The thought that went into it was amazing!!! I mean, she actually came up with a dish that began with the letter X. I can’t remember what it was… some sort of Chinese cookie, I think.

These pictures had to be in color!

The lumpia (looks like egg rolls) is Mama Joey’s specialty. She could take on Bobby Flay in a Lumpia Throwdown and win.

My sister wasn’t the only one who was creative that day. The gifts were so out of the box. A friend who had “O” bought me a little oak tree for our new house. Another friend who had “Y” bought a yellow flash drive and filled it with over 200 songs that begin with Y.

Some of the gifts. Check out the cake made of bath towels!

Some of the ladies I LOVE so much!

I loved all my gifts. Some were just for me, but my FAVORITE was for us. MIL Joey gave Mr. Joey and I tickets to see Aida at the Sydney Opera House! The seats were amazing and it was one of our favorite parts of our honeymoon. The show was stunning, the Opera House beautiful, and the two of us were completely giddy in our newlywed bliss.

What are some of your favorite “themes” for bridal showers?

That is a really good idea for a theme! I didn’t know bridal showers could have themes, the only 2 I’ve been to didn’t have one!

@mrspaetz: Are you talking about the food or the gifts? My sister made a menu of all 26 foods. Someone has a picture of it somewhere :)

@Jessie516: I know. I don’t think we have any of the actual rehearsal and now we only have about 2 pictures of us together in Ozzie. The brightside is that we have all of our wedding and rehearsal dinner pictures.

That is an AWESOME party- what a cool idea! I haven’t a clue what is going to happen with our shower. We may not end up having one since our bridal party isn’t very, um…interested in doing anything at all. If we have one it will probably be thrown by a mother or aunt, but it definitely won’t have this kind of class or creativity!

That’s a great one! Mine was Around The Clock - and people got different hours of the day. 8am was my MOH and she gave us a little egg timer, an omelette pan, a spatula, and a dollar to buy some eggs :) It was my favorite gift that day!

What a cute theme! My shower was last week, and they did months of the year - each person was assigned a month, and they made a little poster for each season that had pics of me doing different things in that season.

I did two showers last year, for one I did “round the clock” which is always cute and lots of info on the web if you google for it.

The second shower was “sense”-ual, which was my favorite. I assigned each guest a sense - “Please bring Jane and John a gift that stimulates their sense of…. TOUCH” or whichever. Then for one of the games, we played one where I put spices in cups that were labelled with numbers and we passed those around and smelled and guessed what they were. That was hard!

My favorite thing about the themed showers is people explaining how their gift fits into their month/time/sense etc… massage oil for touch, popcorn and wine glasses for a midnight snack, picnic stuff for june or july. :)

Ha ha, just remembered that I should add this - FMIL gave me a bunch of thanksgiving stuff, as she had November. Including a box of stove top stuffing, which we noticed later has an expiration date on our wedding day! Same year and everything - one month from now. Um, no, I HIGHLY doubt she planned this… most likely just pulled it out of the cabinet.
