Our Cohabitation Rings

September 18th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Moonbeam

We had these made a couple of years ago, a few months after we moved in with each other in Seattle. They’ve got three garnets (we had been together for three years when we got them), each other’s first initial and the dents sort of look like tree bark. They kind of reminded us of carving each other’s initials in a tree. The insides are engraved with ’exclusive rights’.

Working with Sally at Fancy in Seattle was fantastic, and I highly recommend it for anyone in the area. If we were still in Seattle, I wouldn’t have even looked on Etsy for our rings. But since my office was no longer just a few blocks from her store, I looked at Etsy, fell in love with my ring, and had to make the tough decision of not going back to Sally. (Don’t worry, you can buy stuff online!)

Maybe I’ll be able to afford some gifts for my ’maids from there, it was always my go-to gift stop when I lived in Seattle.

I’m excited about my November upgrade, but I’d love some ideas on what to do with these rings, because we still love them.

What would you do with these rings? And did you wear any tokens of commitment before your actual engagement?

I’d love to hear ideas as well. I’m still struggling with what to do with my promise ring. It’s been sitting in my Jewelery box for a few months now. I already have a birthstone ring that my parents gave me for Christmas about 5 years ago on my right hand. I am not a huge fan of multiple rings on my hands.

what a fantastic idea!!! i enjoy the bark look as well (and garnet is my birth stone. love it!!) Why not wear the rings on your other ring finger, or get their size (increased or decreased) and wear them on another finger on the opposite hand? Or, get a nice necklace, loop the ring and wear the ring as a necklace?

I would put it on a necklace. Or you could wear it on your other hand. . . I think both of those ideas were already mentioned, but they’re good ones! : )

When my husband’s wedding ring came in from the engraver, I wanted to do something special to present it to him (not quite as elaborate as a proposal, but nice!). I bought a small shadow box from Michael’s and filled it with lots of stuff from our courtship. His wedding band was hanging on a little pin in there.

After the wedding, he put the Claddagh that I bought him when we moved in together on that pin. My old Claddagh is in there, too =)

It’s a neat little time capsule that we walk by every day on the way to bed. It was an easy project and I’m really glad I did it!

I would have a jewler make it into a charm for a necklace.

oh i love fancy! i have one of her measuring tape rings. i think you should keep wearing those rings. they’re really fun.

all of our rings came from etsy. i’m not a flashy diamond lady so etsy was the only way to go.

I would definetly consider putting it on your right hand, but if that’s too much hand jewlery for you, I’d put it on a chain and have it as a necklace.

Still not into it? Then I’d get a cool shadow box (they have one at Ikea that’s about the right size and only about $10) and frame those two suckers up! I’m really into meaningful artwork and they sure are beautiful! Put some cool patterned paper or even fabric (like burlap?) behind them and maybe write something on the matte like “exclusive rights” and the date you moved in together?

Anyway, love that you guys did something to symbolize your committment when you moved in together. Very cool!

My BF and I both bought each other claddagh rings, and I’ve already decided I’m just going to have mine sized and swap it over to the other hand. We love the symbolism of them (love, friendship, and loyalty) and I can’t imagine not wearing mine.

And I’m a garnet birthstone baby too :)

Those are awesome! FI is still questioning why he doesn’t get an engagment ring. Maybe I should splurge? :)
