Ring Alterations and Secret Engravings

September 18th, 2009 @ 6:02 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

Mr. Mary Jane and I took our rings to the jeweler today. We really didn’t want to part with them, but we had a few matters to attend to.

First off, I needed my wedding band re-sized. I had the e-ring re-sized back in March, but never the wedding band. It was a bit too big, and I need that corrected. It’s a little weird wearing two rings of different sizes on one finger!!

And, speaking of two rings… not for long! I’m also having them soldered together. My wedding band is a ’half eternity’ band, and in spite of its Euro Shank design, it kept spinning around. It and the e-ring were getting all scuffed up due to the friction between them, too! Not cool. I made the decision to solder them together months ago, but I think that even if I had been unsure on our wedding day, this past week of straightening and re-straightening would have convinced me.

If you are planning to have your rings soldered together after you marry, I have some advice for you:

Do it before your wedding! Then it’ll be MUCH easier for him to put both on your finger. Mr. MJ and I had to struggle with mine on the day-of: that sucker did not want to play nice with my e-ring. And once you’re married, trust me. You won’t want to part with them (even for a short time).

Mr. Mary Jane had to part with his ring too, because we’re both having them engraved! And… it’s a surprise!

We both went to the jewelry store at the same time, but didn’t want each other to know what we were having written inside each others’ rings. Soooooo, we plugged our ears! Yes, we each took a turn at “not listening” while the other conveyed her or his message to the jeweler.

Our rings will only be gone a day or so, but we miss them already. I’m excited to see how they look with their new engravings, too!

Are you having your husband/FI’s ring engraved secretly? And will you be soldering your e-ring and wedding ring together? (Before or after the wedding?)

I had Mr Frenchie’s ring engraved w/o him knowing. At the end of our wedding day I asked him if he saw it and he still had no clue :) He was so excited!

I am having the same issue with my ring. It has diamonds only on 1/2 the ring and it is always spinning so that just the gold band is showing and I am ALWAYS turning it around.
I am so worried about putting them together. I have heard people talk about when they had babies…feeling like thier e ring got in the way and they removed it
I am confused. I want the option to take off the ering…yet I HATEalways twisting it around. Hmmmmm…..what to do? What to do?

@spraguebride: I’m not certain about this but I think there is some kind of clasp you can get on your e-ring to connect the two, but they unhook so you can just wear your wedding band. I’d ask your jeweler.

My set came with a prong that held the two together, but I had it soldered since I could see that they were wearing each other down a bit (my mom’s were really worn thin). Now it’s just one ring.

@Mrs. French Bulldog: My guy wouldn’t notice either. I’ll have to think of an engraving.

I had Mr. S’s ring engraved secretly. I also took my bands in to be re-sized and soldered together before the wedding. Unfortunately because they BROKE my e-ring in the process - I had to part with my rings again after the wedding. I FINALLY have my rings permanetly now. Yay!

My FI wants to have “If this comes off, I get half” put inside both of our rings. At first I thought it was just a funny joke, but he keeps saying it, so I’m threatening to just put it inside his. :)

i never had my band sized so I am still wearing two rings of different sizes on the same finger…and have been for 3 months! I supposed I could part with it by mailing it to my grandfather to size ( I wouldn’t trust anyone else!) but I’m not willing to part with it for that long so it’s going to wait unilt December. I can’t wait!

The secret engraving is such an awesome idea! I want to know what he’s putting on yours!! Maybe it’s an inside thing that only you two would understand…sigh, love.

@Rocktsrgn: I love it! I’m cheeky like that though… lol

I don’t think I’m going to engrave his ring… if I do it will be the date b/c he’s terrible with dates! lol this way he’d never miss our anniversary.

I love the idea of it being a secret!!

I think I’m also going to get mine soldered together. Since you recommend getting it done before the wedding, when would you say to do that? I really don’t want to be without my ering. But I guess I don’t want to be without it AFTER the wedding, either! Haha.

We’ll be engraving our wedding rings. We have a while to figure out what to write. I figure the right thing will come to me out of the blue one day. :)

I’ve really been thinking about soldering my rings together. I need to get them sized a little bit. My ring has 3 peices so I’m worried about doing them all together because when it gets really hot, my hands swell and I would hate to not be able to wear them. I’m in the same situation with the half a band of diamonds on both bands and I know it will drive me crazy to keep them straight.

I picture you with your fingers in your ears going “la la la la la I can’t hear you!” I’m sure it wasn’t quite like that!!

My wedding band is also a half eternity and keeps turning around so that the diamonds are hidden. Both rings are separate at the moment, but I might have to think about having them joined together. I just worry that one day I wont want to wear my engagement ring but I wont have the option to!

I think we’re going to do engravings on ours before the wedding.
