Wedding Card Holder

September 18th, 2009 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

I’ve had this post idea in my head for quite some time now, but I held off because I hadn’t come to a conclusion about what we will use. But then I decided that I should reach out to the readers to see if they have any ideas, because I’m getting desperate!

So let me start from the beginning. I was told I needed to bring something for the wedding guests to put cards in should they bring them to the wedding. I don’t want to bring a box that is reminiscent of the boxes I used to create in elementary school for my valentines, because I have zero crafting ability.

And I’ve seen that other people have used birdcages:

They’re fine, but I don’t know if people will see the birdcage on the table, and not know how it worked. If I wasn’t reading wedding blogs everyday, I probably wouldn’t know what to do with a birdcage if I saw one at a wedding.

I’ve also seen people use vintage luggage:

But again, it doesn’t fit in with our style, and we aren’t having a destination wedding, so we can’t make this work.

So now what? Those are the only ideas I’ve had and seen. Of those, I like the birdcage one best, but as I said, I’m not set on it. Any ideas? Things you’ve seen at weddings? Share your ideas for creative card receptacles with the hive!

We crafted a big papier mache tree (with a hole in the trunk for cards) for Sister and BIL Bruschetta’s fall wedding — it looked awesome but took a TON of time!

We bought an oversided apothocary jar and will hang a vintage inspired wood sign in front of it that reads “cards”. We are having the sign made through someone that we found on Etsy…I love that place!

hmmm. Pardon my ignorance, but how does the vintage lugguage one work? Is there a slit in the top or does the luggage open??? Lol.

We used that same birdcage (yay saveoncrafts.com!), and it was a super easy/inexpensive project. Attach a card to a length of ribbon, wrap it around the cage, and you’re done! As far as guests not knowing what to do with the birdcage, I worried a little about it too, but it wasn’t an issue at all. I think the “Cards” sign and the placement of the cage on the gift table was enough for people to figure out what it was for.

We were married in Maine, so we used a LL Bean tote to collect cards. I hung a tag that said CARDS off of one of the handles. It was simple, user friendly, and effective.

You could maybe stick a card or two in the birdcage to give everyone an idea. . . Or the sign “cards” around or next to the birdcage should clue people in.

I had a garden wedding…so I made a planter card box. I have a photo in my for sale website (no one has bought it yet!) But it was easy to make - I had to have my bother in law cut the slot with one of his saws…then I just spray painted it.
I have a pro photo of it here:

We have galvanized buckets in a variety of places in our decor, so we are using a galvanized mailbox.

Friends of mine used a mailbox mounted on a wooden base. The mailbox was painted like a tuxedo, but you could paint it with anything, or just a color and put your names on it.

We are getting married on a beach, and were hoping to use a lobster trap (sort of like a birdcage)!

This is similar to the box idea, but we used a popcorn tin.

We took one of those big tins that you get at Christmas with the different flavors of popcorn in them, and then spray painted it in our wedding colors. The next day (our wedding day, actually) my dad cut a hole in the top that looked like this:

>——<

So he could fold the edge under the top and have a slit to enter cards, without rough metal edges that people can get hurt on.

Then my sister tied a ribbon around the middle (also in wedding colors) and voila! a beautiful card holder.

It worked really well, with lots of room for cards, and it was pretty easy to carry around afterwards because it was circular and so fit in the crook of an arm.

I found a hat box in our damask pattern. I was going to cut a slit in the top, but it was to adorable so I am going to prop the lid open and I framed a cute saying ‘Wish Box, leave little notes and cards for the happy couple’. I am also adding blank note cards and pens (with our pattern!) for people that would just like to leave a note. You could use a vintage box, or find different ones at craft stores.

I’m not sure what we’ll do yet, but I’ve thought about getting an awesome pinata and just making the hole bigger. how fun would that be? of course, it depends on how fancy you’re trying to make your reception :)

i’ve heard wayyy too many stories of cards mysteriously disappearing. to me, my daddy’s jacket pocket is the place for cards.

What about a mailbo? Either vintage or realitively new looking?

What about a small chest? Maybe put a blank envelope in it to give people an idea as to what to put in there. I like the mailbox idea too, very cute!

I like the mailbox idea, and the suitcases are cool. (Although I don’t know how they did it either.)

I am really excited about this. FI suggested doing a clear glass bowl, which I thought was cool and had a fishbowl idea, but it was impossible to find a large enough glass fishbowl. We actually have a plain punch bowl, and my dad is making a cork wedge to put in the lid, kind of like you would see on some apothecary jars. He’s cutting a slit in the top to insert the cards, and I’ll tie a ribbon around the outside of the cork too. Hope that all makes sense - I definitely plan to put pics in my gallery afterward!

We’ve been haveing a hard time with this as well. Recently went to an Antique Fair & got lots of great ideas but came home with nothing. We both LOVE to cook & we’re foodies so we saw lot’s of old food tins, canisters and vintage wine cases. The best, although not big enough was an Easy Bake Oven. Fiance had planned to rig the door so it could only open so far. But, they’re really small so unless they made an industrial 6 burner, that wouldn’t work!

I had found a cute basket at a Winners store. It’s sage green and cream with a beautiful design around the edge. Simple and elegant. Plus, we can use it again in our living room!

There are some cute ideas here:

We found a vintage copper mailbox at an antique store for $14! It has the word MAIL hammered into it. It’s gorgeous!
