About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Snip, Snip, Snip

September 20th, 2009 @ 2:55 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Where have I been? At home. Snipping and sorting and stamping nearly everything in site. Our DIY projects are heading towards home plate and I need to get them done in the next two weeks. Luckily, most of them are already dusting the catcher, and only a few of them are still on third base. (Note: No idea where these baseball analogies came from.)

Here’s a sneak peek at some of what I’ve been working on (although the images below are just inspiration, they’re not of my actual projects):

1) A picture wall–but instead of pictures of only us, we’ll be hanging pictures of us with our guests with clothespins.

(source)

2) A pie bar with a collection of cake stands from various garage sales and vintage stores.

(source)

3) Napkins made from vintage fabric that I’ve been collecting from thrift stores. Lucky for me, I was tipped off that pinking shears would mean no sewing. Thus, ournapkins have pointy edges like the ones below.

(source)

4) A DIY photobooth with a great background a la Mrs. Coconut, but with cowboy costumes to go along with our ranch theme.

(source)

After seeing Mrs. Bee’s fun photobooth full o’ bees, I was uber-jealous of her background (and of all the bees who got to participate) but oh-so-glad to have a link to where she bought it. I poked around the website she bought hers at, Purl Soho, and have narrowed it down to four fabrics I love. All are the same price, which doesn’t help me decide. They’re each $9 per yard; Mrs. Bee told me she used 2.5 yards and it wasn’t enough for group shots. I’ll probably buy 3 to 3.5 yards.

So hive, I turn to you. Vote for your favorite photobooth background fabric below. If you have a strong opinion as to why, fill me in! Maybe I’m not realizing that big prints won’t be good or a certain color will make everyone look like an Oompa Loompa.

Deer Valley

Del Hi

Fiona

Pretty Please

Or, do I splurge and go for this one at $16 per yard?

County Fair

So which is it? Vote below!

Or, if you know of another fabric website with similar (or cheaper!) pricing, let me know! I’m new to this whole fabric game.

Have you checked with JoAnns or Hobby Lobby for cheaper alternatives?

I really like Joel Dewberry’s Deer Valley collection… in fact, some of those fabrics will be making an appearance at our wedding!

You can find it cheaper than $9/yard, though. I usually turn to Etsy supplies for fabric. I found that one for $7.75 after a really quick search. You might be able to find it a little bit cheaper, too.

i think country fair is the best for your theme/style. but it is the more expensive one. and some of the other ones i think are a little too busy for a backdrop.

I think the colors in deer valley are the most “cowboy-ish.” Don’t know why… just a gut reaction.

I was recently at a wedding that had a photobooth enclosed in red velvet. The red reflected off everyones face in the pictures. just something to keep in mind about that color.

I voted for Deer Valley, but Fiona was a close second for me. I think these two are the most “country chic” out of the $9 bunch. The County Fair one is cute, but it’s completely up to you whether you think it’s $7 a yard cuter ($21 total for 3 yards). Any way you cut it, you’re going to have a rockin’ photobooth!

I would go with Fiona. We did something similar, and I think a consistent smaller print seems to make a better backdrop. Another idea that you might want to do, is we bought a bunch of silk flowers in the wildflower variety, we had kind mountain lodge theme. We pulled off all the flowers and leaves we wanted to use and wired them to an empty frame. We really liked the result.
Here’s a link to our frame in action

These are all great. I voted for Deer Valley, but I think any of them would work out really well. I can’t wait to see the results!

I love the Fiona, but I think they’ll all go great with your theme. Good luck :)

I agree with Grnmel - the consistent pattern in 2 colors is less distracting than the others and will make a better backdrop but is still cute and gives some personality. Also the warm tones are usually flattering if it does affect the coloring in the pictures (like candlelight.)

Also, you might want to consider getting 5 yards. If Bee used 2.5 yards, she probably just had enough to hit the ground and just used the width of the fabric… and that wasn’t wide enough for group shots.

I think doubling it up lengthwise would be easier. If you got less than 5 yards you might end up piecing it all together to make a solid rectangle.

I voted for Fiona because I think the others would fight too much with the subject matter. :) Vs. accent.
Just my two cents!

Argh! I love them all. Are you going to be able to re-use the fabric afterwards? That would be a big decision making factor for me. I’d buy the one I like the best, and make myself something from it (or send it to a crafty friend to turn it into something!). 3-3.5 yards is enough for a cute top. Or bag. Or lots of bags. Or pillows.

I like Fiona too. It won’t compete with guests’ attire!

Red doesn’t look nice in black-and-white (it’s a muddy mid-grey) so I vote no to Pretty Please.

The large butterfly/flowers in Del Hi might look like they’re growing out of people’s heads.

Deer Valley is nice, but I still like the more consistent pattern of Fiona.

Your splurge fabric is nice too, but IMHO not worth the extra cost.

If you have an ikea in your area, they have really interesting & pretty fabrics for very reasonable prices. I got a neat geometric green & white canvassy fabric for $.99 a yard from the bargain bin. :)

I voted for Fiona too! It is the most complimentary & it will act as a nice neutral backdrop.

I voted for Fiona too! I think it is the least obtrusive and will work with your color palette/BM dresses.

For cheaper vintage fabrics, have you thought of thrift stores or yard sales/flea markets? I’m not sure if you would even have time for this but it’s worth a shot and you could prob. get a much better deal. Maybe you have some older relatives, my grandma used to have a bunch of vintage material and curtains hanging, check out basements!

Fiona and Deer Valley are my picks. The latter reminds me, in some way that I can’t really articulate, of your invitation suite!

“…stamping nearly everything in **sight.”

I voted Fiona because it’s pretty, but the colors are simple, probably won’t clash with anyone’s dress, and won’t fight for attention with the people in the foreground. I did really like Del Hi and the County Fairgrounds, but with the bright pops of color I would worry that people would end up staring at the backgrounds rather than the guests!
