09/09/09: A Good Day to Get Married

September 21st, 2009 @ 2:51 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

Before my first wedding, I didn’t actually know that weddings were supposed to take place on Saturdays. It never really occurred to me at all. I picked a date that worked with our schedules, and thought nothing of it until the responses to the save-the-dates started coming back:

“Did you know that’s a Thursday?”

And then I found out that People Get Married On Saturdays. Oh well.

When Mr. Mary Jane and I got engaged and started thinking about a date, I was armed with the knowledge that Saturday = Wedding. And we thought about a lot of them. 10-10-09 was one. 12-11-10 was another. 5-15-10. 6-19-10 (my parents’ anniversary). So many Saturdays to pick! Which one would it be?

But then we started to evolve our plan, and we decided to get married at a city hall. Each of our sets of parents did it, so why not? Except, courthouses aren’t open on the weekends. So a weekday, it would have to be! With such a small wedding, the amount of guest conflicts would be minimal, at least. (And aside from convenience for guests, I’m not sure why weddings are always on Saturdays.)

Including weekdays in our date-search meant a lot more possible options! There were now 5 days a week to choose from, not just one. How about 07-08-09? It was a Tuesday. Or maybe Friday, 01-01-10 (although, since it’s a holiday, the government offices would probably be closed). Ultimately, we narrowed down our date by convenience and comfort.

We both felt that the earlier 2009 summer months didn’t allow for enough planning time, but neither of us wanted to wait until 2010 to tie the knot. That left the fall of 2009. Enter school. Our fall term of classes was to resume in late August, with midterm projects and tests most likely coming due in mid-October. Since August was vetoed by me (my anniversary with my ex was in August), we decided that a date in September would be ideal.

What’s this I see? September 9, 2009? A Wednesday during the third week of classes. And what a cool date! After a little discussion over whether or not the matchy-match date was too cliché, Mr. Mary Jane and I decided that it was the one for us. We told everybody to save it and never looked back.

It didn’t really occur to me that we were choosing a famous date, but later, I read a lot of different things.

That link above provides a collection of some “9″ and “09/09/09″ trivia. A few of my favorites:

“Multiply nine by any two, three or four-digit number and the sums of those will also break down to nine. For example: 9×62 = 558; 5+5+8=18; 1+8=9.”

The date “represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we’ll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101), or a millennium (mark your calendars for January 1, 3001), depending on how you want to count it.”

The Chinese also consider 9 to be a very lucky number (but the Japanese don’t like it!). I also found various forewarnings from Christians concerned that the triple nines could easily be inverted in to triple sixes. Some people even said they wouldn’t be going outside on this possibly ominous date. Wow! I tried not to let any of this negativity get to me, and honestly I didn’t really put a lot of weight behind the positive parts either (aside from “Hmm, that’s interesting.”).

We chose our date — which happened to be a Wednesday — because it worked for us and the numbers were neat and easy to remember. And the day turned out absolutely perfect, cloudless, and temperate. It wasn’t even windy! (That’s pretty much unheard of here in North Dakota.)

Though it turns out that we share our wedding anniversary with tens of thousands of Chinese couples, I’m happy just to share it with Mr. Mary Jane.

What considerations went in to choosing your day and date? Does your date have any good or bad cultural associations?

Great post, Mrs. Mary Jane. Our date isn’t as mathematically interesting as yours though! We just chose a date that worked well for our VIPS and went with it!

What a great date! We *almost* got married on 9-09-09-just us and parents but as things usually do, the wedding evolved.

Love this! As we don’t yet have our date narrowed down, I’m still looking for a cute date that’s easy to remember. At the top right now: 07.09.11.

I love this. I originally wanted to get hitched on 9-19 since our date-a-versary is 8-18 it didn’t happen. Though our wedding date does add up to 18 8-1-09 which someone told me later and I think it’s kind of coll.

I really wanted 3/7/09 because it was our 7 year anniversary and that would be all odd numbers which I’m obsessed with. Unfortunately that didn’t work out and we’re now 7/7/10 which is a Wednesday but we’re going to Maui alone so it’s fine for us.

We were married on 08/08/08, which was a Friday and it too was suppose to be a very lucky day….8’s are lucky….even the Olympics started on that date. Our local newspaper even did an article on us for getting married that date and it had a lot of meaning as we had been together 8 years.

I like numbers too. Our courthouse wedding was on 09/04/09, but we did first look to 09/09/09 which was already booked! Our ceremony date is 03/07/10 which I like in a nerdy way because 3+7=10. :-)

We got married on 6-7-08 - it was our dating anniversary, fell on a Saturday, and we liked the consecutive numbers :)

A very good day, indeed. (And my birthday. Which normally sucks, but the year of the lucky nines made for a good one!)

We wanted to do it October 22, which was the date he proposed 2 years ago, but since its a Thursday we couldn’t do it. So we did the saturday afterwards instead, And it just so happens to be FI’s half birthday (which we didn’t realize until about a month ago)

california became a state on sept. 9th!

i always thought it was kind of random how some people pick a wedding date. for some it’s a significant date, like an aniversary or birthday or something, and others, it’s the only date their venue/photog/whatever was free! it cracks me up

We’re getting married on 10/10/10, so I’m a big fan of 09/09/09!

I love it! We picked 11/11/11. Originally wanted 1/1/2011 (but decided to change it because this will be a very busy time for me - last day of law school). Two 1’s coming together. Yes, corny, but we like it. :-D

I mean last year of law school… if only 1/1/11 was my last day. LOL!!!

We ended up with our wedding day being on May 29th, we initially wanted May 15th so it would be almost 1 year exactly from our proposal date (he proposed May 14th), but due to scheduling conflicts we had to go with the 29th. Our anniversary date for our relationship is on August 29th…so we figured that we were just meant to stick with the 29th. :P

People Get Married On Saturdays? Not necessarily. I’m getting married on a Sunday, as do most Jewish couples. In Italy getting married on a Sunday is considered good luck, and many couples these days get married on Fridays, too.

I’m thinking with the newer trends of dessert receptions and brunch receptions, Saturday weddings will become less standard. I think the main idea with a Saturday wedding is that people are usually planning on drinking and partying late, which makes it brutal to get up and going for work the next morning. Not so much at a Baptist (My family and I are conservatives) wedding! ; )

For us it had everything to do with meshing everything that’s important to, well, me. We both wanted the priest who confirmed me to preside over our wedding…we both agreed it would be better to get married after school ended (I’m a 10th grade teacher) so that I could contribute to last minute details & attend to guests…and we both agreed that our ceremonies (that’s right, plural) should fall as close to the weekend as possible since 5/6 of our guests are coming out of town. So June 25th & 27th evolved into our wedding dates.

We chose May as the month because its not too hot and not too cold here in South Africa, and there was a minimal chance of rain as well. It was also on a Saturday, which is the most convenient for guests, as you pointed out, but also its better to have a day to recover from the wedding festivities (the Sunday) Our date was the 16th, and there was no specific reason for choosing that date, other than I liked it and our venue was free!

I think 09.09.09 is an awesome wedding date. We chose our date because the timing worked out best for us. However, I did pick the specific day because I have this weird thing about preferring even numbers to odd ones. Because we were getting married in an odd month (5) and an odd year (09), I at least wanted the date to be even, so we picked the 16th.

We picked our date based on the availability of the reception hall, the church, the photographer, our local Big Ten’s football schedule and umm guests’ school schedules. :) It just so happens that we ended up with a date/weekend that has been very popular in our families. Go figure

What a great wedding date. :)

We chose June 19, 2010 because it’s a day before my parents’ 40th anniversary.

Very cool post. We got a little bit of hate, too, for choosing 9/11/09 as our wedding date. But we didn’t let it get to us! It’s just a date, after all.
