Miss Lamb, Norfolk Age and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Engagement Date: January 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera House About Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!
About Miss Lamb

Come to Our Wedding, Yo!

September 21st, 2009 @ 5:17 pm by Miss Lamb

I’m not exactly sure when Save-the-Dates (STDs hehehehe) came into vogue, but ever since I received my first one, I knew I wanted to send them. In some ways, I think they’re on the narcissistic side of weddings where those little magnets say: “Look at me! Put me on your fridge! Think of me every day for the rest of your lives!” But on the other hand, they’re so darn cute! And convenient when trying to remember which weekend dates between May and October you will be out of town. It’s like I don’t need a day timer, I just need to look at my fridge.

Seriously. Making Save-the-Dates could be my full time job. Here’s the routine:

  1. Search the bowels of the internet, the hills of the blogs, the valley of the Knot for inspiration until your eyes glaze over and you’re pretty sure your retinas have burned off.
  2. Wait for your eyes to heal, then choose the perfect theme/design/whatever and begin the intensive internet search for discounted supplies, coupons, postage stamps until you fall asleep on your laptop and realize that you have 37 pages of the letter G imprinted on your blog entry.
  3. Realize that the idea won’t work due to cost/limited resources/time restraints/change in desired feel/change of mind for desired colors/etc.
  4. Repeat.

I did this for about the first two weeks I was engaged. Then I settled on the idea – and gosh darnit, I set my mind to execute those bad boys. These were the obstacles that I had to overcome in order to realize my Save-the-Date dreams:

  1. Choose a venue – yeah, a city and state would be an awesome thing to include on the cards. Sigh. It took us about 6 months to secure a venue from the day we started looking until the day we had a signed contract in our hands.
  2. Find picture in mess of moving boxes that I never unpacked 1.5 years ago – I took a bunch of beauty shots of the campus where my Lambie Love and I met – and it was a film camera … so I needed to find the pictures, so we could scan the best one. Awesome – I had to go through 14 boxes all crammed in an attic cubby and that’s the only place I can think of where they could possibly be. Hello, weekend project!
  3. I like the idea of mini-envelopes on one side of the post-card – but I don’t know if these are post office friendly – I could mail one to myself from work and see if it gets there in one piece, I could take a prototype to the post office and see what the clerk says, or I could bail on all that extra work and just buy envelopes… I was leaning towards the lazy trail!

Just making the list of obstacles, made me want to send an e-save-the-date.

Did anyone have an easy time of Save-the-Dates? What were the obstacles you overcame? Did they turn out as nicely as you had hoped? Or did you ditch the Save-the-Dates all together?

I made my own save the dates as well.. it was definately frustrating at first but they turned out awesome. I just purchased blank business cards and business card sized self adhesive magnets. Their are templates available for you to design your own STDs online.. all in all they came out wonderfully!

i totally searched the bowels too…. and possibly still do. even AFTER i’ve completed things…. sigh. after postage went up, we had no doubts in our minds about sending out postcards! but it’s worth it and it’s fun… we’re actually having a lot of our out-of-town guests come to our wedding BC of the stds, so i’m happy! can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

Isn’t this the process for every wedding project? Can’t wait to see what your search of the bowels resulted in.

I agonized over STD’s for weeks, sending annoying e-mails to my BM’s, Mom, and FMIL looking for opinions. Here is my advice, don’t ask for opinions! lol, because every one liked something different, and hated something someone else loved

You would have thought our STD were our formal invitations, that is how much I obsessed over them! Even now… we are just about to go to print and I can still find things I want to change. Cause don’t people keep them on their fridge forever and ever?!! haha

I thought about all of the crazy wonderful things we could do too! Then realized that we’d be doing magnets - the image will be creative, just not the rest of it. ;) I’m sure no matter what you decide it will fit your style and personality!

Our save the dates turned out beautifully and CHEAP! Lots of our family are traveling for our wedding in Massachusetts. So, we found a touristy postcard we liked (a cartoon map of the state of Massachusetts), contacted the company that makes it (their logo was tucked away on the card), and purchased said postcard in bulk. Seriously, we paid about 12 or 15 cents a card in packs of 50. We then took the cards to a local printer, who printed our info directly on the card. All told, before postage we spent less than $100. And we’re having a ginormous wedding. We’ve gotten lots of compliments for our “original” save the dates. Yup, feeling pretty pleased with us.

Siiiiiiiigh! Our save the dates are going to be so labor intensive it HURTS. But! They are going to be so worth it in my book, even if people throw them away! I love the MS STD’s you showed with all the little calendars, SO adorable!

Miss Lamb, you make me laugh! I avoided this cycle of destruction by putting my STD (*suppressed chuckle*) up to the hive’s vote. Thank God for WB! :)

No Save the Date for us - its not really a huge trend in South Africa, plus my laziness won me over. Too much effort!

The title of your post made me laugh. Mr. Q feels the need to end sentences with “yo” often. My favorite is ” ’cause I love you, yo”

We’re doing Save the Date Postcards, simple and quick (I say that now)

I knew we wanted to do a magnet, but I couldn’t find any that we liked on normal websites. Finally we looked at Etsy and FH found the cutest lovebird STD’s! Obviously wanted to do a picture one, but it’s been raining here nonstop since June so we haven’t had a chance to do engagement photos.

LOL, so true, Lamby. Our save the dates were one of my first paper crafting attempts, so they were by no means amazing — but they got the job done!

I’ve hit the wall over several wedding related items - I think the STDs rank #3 in my hardest wedding decisions list though. There was also a lot of pressure to pull something together because 90% of our guests are from out of town.

@moderndaisy: We had the same problem as you! We hadn’t booked a photographer yet because we hadn’t booked a venue yet, and we couldn’t book the photographer without knowing which location, so we couldn’t get photographs for our STDs . . . what a vicious cycle!

Huge fight with the printer. That was my obstacle. They didn’t do our invites, I’ll tell you that.

Actually, they didn’t end up doing our STDs, either. Hint to printers: don’t EVER tell a bride “this is not a normal save the date. You should reformat it to…” especially when the “non-normal” STD she brought you is in that month’s MSW. And, in fact, in the photo above–the 11×17 one that says “June 2006.”

I just finished the whole STD package this weekend… just waiting on a high res photo from the photographer and my envelopes. I agonized over this decision too! It didn’t come together until one random thing sparked my interest on the web after weeks of searching, then the rest was easy. Can’t wait to see what you came up with!!

A side of my wish we could have enough time to send STD, we’ll go email because of the timing, but I wanted to be able to practice for the Invitations a little bit :)
