Mrs. Lamb, Norfolk Age and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Engagement Date: January 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera House About Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

Inspiration from Old, Dead, White Guy

September 21st, 2009 @ 12:15 pm by Mrs. Lamb

So Miss Snapdragon wrote about her van Gogh inspired wedding ideas and I really identified with her. Since I began to have serious grown-up dreams about my wedding, I’ve always associated my ideas with a particular painting. Snappy’s van Gogh happens to be my John Singer Sargent.

My favorite painting of his, “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose”, embodied what I felt like was a perfect, ethereal, Gatsby-esque, summer, dream wedding. I wanted fireflies, gardens, and those gorgeous lanterns.

Since I’m decidedly not having a summer, garden wedding, I’ve gone back to Sargent for more inspiration.

I want at least one bridal portrait of me to feel like this:

I want my bridesmaids to feel strong and beautiful in black dresses they love:

I want our reception to have a little of this:

And perhaps cocktail reception lighting could have this kind of glow:

Do particular artists inspire your wedding style? Or has a particular painting inspired any aspect of your wedding?

Nothing in my wedding inspired by a painting - yet……but whenever I’m envisioning colors for a room in the house, or decor, different paintings always pop into mind. Especially Matisse. Bright colors! And Dali and Van Gogh.

Yummm…I love how you’re using art to inspire your wedding. I love weddings that have the Great Gatsby feel to them.

I went to a Sargent in Italy exhibit at the Denver Art Museum a few years ago and was amazed by his talent. Such beautiful portraits… and his use of light makes Kinkade look kitschy.

I love the first painting too, esp. the colors . . Did you know Sargent later in life called it Tarnation, Silly, Silly Pose? I think he was tired of everyone liking it better than his favorite, Madame X.

Matisse could inspire me any day! The colors, the composition. Yum!

I love the strength of Sargent’s portraits. Art was my second major in undergrad and I feel like I could design weddings around paintings all day long. I agree with a lot of posters, Matisse paintings would be excellent sources of inspiration! Another favorite of mine would work as well - Degas - mmmmm, can you just imagine the movement, the muted colors, the ballet???
