Beauty on the Outside

September 22nd, 2009 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

On the same busy day that I had my second hair trial, I got it together and visited a makeup artist in the city looking for guidance on how to put on my makeup for my wedding day. A bonus was trying out the full bridal look, since I kept my hair trial style intact all day! Signing up for a makeup lesson was not done because I know nothing about makeup (the how to put on mascara lesson make me LOL inside), but I rarely wear eyeshadow and didn’t know the secrets to that bridal glow, so I thought a lesson was money well spent. I came armed with my inspirations.

(source for both)

I was taken aback when the makeup artist I visited looked at my inspirations with sort of a scoff and told me the looks “to her” were completely different. I focused on the eyes with a glowy look and light lips - so that’s what I asked for.

We created a dewy base with MAC strobe cream applied to the entire face.

(Source)

Followed by Laura Geller spackle applied to the eyes and face (there is a trio kit which also includes primer for the lips, which I purchased).

(Source)

Then she applied MAC Face and Body foundation with a brush that stayed wet all evening. It grossed me out and rubbed off every time I touched my face. Needless to say, I crossed that off my list.

(Source)

For the eyes, she applied my own eyeshadow to the lids and MAC Soba eyshadow in the crease of the eye, along with a darker brown which I later nixed so I don’t have the name of it to share. At the store, I ended up going with the Wedge shadow instead of Soba, because it was less yellow on my skin.

(Source)

Using an angled brush, we applied MAC charcoal brown shadow as eyeliner to the upper lash line. We lined my eyes with my ancient brown eyeliner and finished the eyes with a black waterproof mascara (which was so difficult to take off). I’m not sure if we used the DIOR blackout mascara, or another. A few were mentioned to me, and I have too much to think about to remember. I wasn’t trilled with the mascara. I think I’ll go get some cheapies at Target to try and just go with one of those. Who knows when I’ll use it again besides on our honeymoon in Hawaii.

Next we applied concealer, so any dust from the eyeshadow didn’t stick to my face. We usedthe Laura Mercier secret camouflage concealer #2, and I really liked it. In her salon it looked pink, which was perfect because I do have a lot of pink in my skin, but in Sephora it looked really yellow - strange. I still bought it, so we’ll see.

(Source)

Then we applied my own blush from Chantecaille. I think it’s called Mood.

(Source)

And for the lips, a heavy layer of NARS Turkish delight lip gloss and a liner which I was not a fan of, so she didn’t add it on my list of makeup to buy.

(Source)

*I despise lip gloss.* It’s so sticky and I hate when I close my lips that the gloss smushes up and makes an ugly line on my upper lip. Bleh. I really wanted a light colored matte lipstick - and maybe I’d put some of my fresh lip balm over it for some shine, but she didn’t have one to recommend. So any ladies with a nice light lip color like those in my inspiration pics, please let me know about it! Yes, I know they have gloss on in the inspiration pics, but I’m hoping there is an alternative out there.

So here I am fresh faced into the world.

And here I am, all done up after my first trial with full makeup.

And from the side.

Okay, I know I look better in the latter photos than in the first photo, but I go “ack” when I see these after photos, too. Besides issues already mentioned, I thought the eyes were really heavy looking in natural light, so I went back (I had only used half the time I paid for during round one) and we re-did the eyes. This time we used some shadow as eyeliner and didn’t do the very dark eye crease. I could show you a pic, but it’s basically a no makeup face with glamour eyes so it will still look weird, but trust me, it was much better.

It’s getting there. Since I didn’t like the foundation, she suggested just spot concealing during round two and forgoing foundation all together, but I did want more coverage than that. I took it upon myself to ask some friends for a foundation suggestion, and found myself at Bare Escentuals. That stuff is lightweight for sure! I bought the light foundation and the mineral veil and called it a day.

(Source)

I’ll have to practice before the big day, but I think I’ll be able to pull something similar off with my arsenal of new makeup!

What type of look are you going for on your wedding day? Do you want to be dewy? Seductive? Something bold? And what’s your makeup must have? For me, it’s a good concealer for under the eyes and so far, the one recommended here is working out great along with the Bare Minerals foundation.

I really just wanted to look like a dressier, more polished version of the way I look every day — and my amazing makeup pro achieved that with ease. (Though I really was wearing much more makeup than I normally do!)

My must-haves are the skincare products I started using on her recommendation — an eye cream and face scrub that make my skin look super :-) even with minimal makeup!

I use Bare Minerals for my everyday makeup, but I don’t recommend using it for your big day. It has reflective agents in it, which reflect bright lights–not good for pictures!! I went to Sephora because I wanted something that wouldn’t reflect in my engagement pictures, and they recommended Dior AirFlash Spray Foundation (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P104914&cm_mmc=us_search-_-GoogleBase-_-P104914-_-978833&_requestid=42976&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=978833) and I LOVE IT. It’s super light, just like Bare Minerals, and so easy to use. I use my Bare Escentuals Full Coverage brush and spray the foundation directly onto the brush (it says to spray directly onto the face, but you waste less if you spray onto the brush). Spray the brush twice and buff onto one side of your face. Repeat for the other side. Apply blush afterward and your look will last all day!

I have big eyes like you and I use the eye shadow as liner technique. It is a much softer look. I also don’t put mascara on my lower lashes. When I do, I look like a spider and I hate it. Not doing your lower lashes also helps if you cry, you don’t get those ugly running lines. As far as lipsticks, I love MAC! They have different textures of lipstick - lustre, satin, matte, cream, etc. And many nude colors. If you have a MAC counter by you I would go and ask to try the different finishes. I have Eden Rocks and it’s really pretty. Looking at the website, Kinda Sexy or Creme D’nude look like your inspiration pictures. You look great in your after pictures! I know it’s hard to get used to if you’re not used to wearing makeup :) You’re definitely on the right track!!!

I love this post! You’re totally right about the MAC foundation. Good girl tossing anything that would rub off.

I would recommend the Bare Escentuals primer (comes in a pump, has vitamins etc). A week after using this stuff daily, my skin was WOW-y smooth and flawless…looks like a glowy bride every day.

I also agree on the MAC lipstick. Go play at the MAC counter!
Good luck!

I think you look great, but I definitely understand the “too much makeup, this isn’t what I normally look like” thing. I’m glad you went back to get your eye makeup redone how you wanted it. Can’t wait to see how it all looks on your wedding day!

I love love MAC foundation, but I’m not sure why she used a face and body foundation on you. I do wedding make up on the side occasionally, and my favorite foundation from MAC is StudioTech. It’s a cream-based foundation that goes on wet and dries. Also, Studio Fix Fluid is another good option. I use it daily, and it’s great because the coverage is buildable from light to heavy. Then just top that off with blot powder, and all you have to do to touch-up throughout the day is blot off the shininess when you have the chance!
I know you shy away from the dark eyes for your wedding day, but remember that in photographs, the make up looks a lot lighter. That’s what I tell girls when I’m doing their make up for the wedding day. But of course, you have to be comfortable!

I have a couple of lipstick recommendations for you!

Clinique Long Last Soft Shine in Honeynut or Babykiss (depends on if you like it more peachy or pinky) These are great because of the moderate coverage and the hint of shimmer.

Clinique Butter Shine in Bamboo Pink is another great one. It’s more sheer, but it’s super moisturizing and great.

They are both great lipsticks that are long lasting and not too overly shiny.

Good luck and you look beautiful!

I love your look, I think makeup is just one of those things I’m consciously avoiding, because I never wear it and don’t want to look overdone, but I love your inspiration and your after photos are gorgeous, I’m sure the lighter eye makeup makes them even better.

I thought you looked beautiful after your trial - and I would highly recommend “Hug Me” by MAC - amazing nude lipstick, tastes yummy, and LASTS.

1. To take off waterproof mascara, you need eye makeup remover designed to take it off. Cheapie drugstore remover will do the trick. Wet the cotton pad with the remover and then hold it to your lashes for a second to dissolve the mascara before you start swiping (same as taking off nail polish).

2. Bare Escentuals makes a “Buxom” lip pencil. If you want something that won’t smush on your top lip (I have that same problem — my peaks on the top lip aren’t all that high), and you want matte and you want a color that won’t transfer all over your man’s lips, this is definitely the way to go. I have 2 of them, *love*.

3. Maybelline Great Lash waterproof will probably do you up fine. Great Lash is a tried-and-true, oldie-but-goodie. If you also get a lash comb to really comb out any clumps, you’ll feel more comfortable with the look / it’ll look more natural.

Your eyes are so gorgeous!

Based on what I’ve read around weddingbee, it seems like mineral makeup is not recommended for your wedding day because of the ‘glittery’ look it gives off in photos.

I use Bare Essentials every day and I plan on using it on my wedding day too. They just came out with a new matte line that works great in photos - it’s completely matte, and does a great job at keeping shine at bay all day. I just bought some a few weeks ago and mix a bit into my regular foundation in the morning and I can definitely see the difference. The coverage is just as good too, if not better. I would HIGHLY recommend it!!!

For the nice light lip color I would recommend using Mac Lustre Touch A49 its looks kind of beige when you put it on but then you apply a little bit of Mac studio tech concealer right on top it gives it this nice light color effect and since it has concealer on top it will last a LONG time then you can just add a little bit of lip gloss on top for some shine. I was always searching for a nice light lipstick color also and I had purchased the nars turkish delight but it goes on too sticky for my taste and doesnt smell good oh and by the way I use Mac studio tech NC25 just in case you wanna go by your local mac and give it a try :)

I think you look beautiful, but if you’re more comfortable in a lighter eye, then by all means, do that! I think you’re going to look great on the wedding day!

I think your make-up looks beautiful, but I do agree the eyeliner is a bit heavy. I’m sure whatever you came up with looks amazing!

i know i’m a little late here but I couldn’t help but post some tips.

First off - dont be afraid to put on a bit more makeup. Moviestars - even the ones that look all natural - are wearing TONS of powder to absorb all that shine the camera is drawn to. Makeup artists will also overdo blush JUST so it shows up in photos.

I would suggest a bit of a shimmery white on the inner corners of the eyes - this will give you a glowy look.

As for the lipstick - go to ur local drugstore and pick up by maybelline a color called “Rosy glow” - it’s the lipsticks with the red plastic tubes. It’s a coral color (it’s a corally pink). Line ur lips first with a soft brown/peachy lipliner. soften with ur fingertips. Then go over that with Physician’s formula’s plumping potion gloss in “pink potion” - this should achieve the color the girl in the second picture has.

Any other qs feel free to ask: annette1030@gmail.com
