About Mrs. Beagle

Old & Borrowed

September 22nd, 2009 @ 3:57 pm by Mrs. Beagle

This past weekend, I traveled to Fredericksburg with my father and sister to visit my Opa and Oma (German for grandfather and grandmother). Although the main purpose of the visit was to celebrate Opa’s birthday, I secretly had other intentions.

Before my mom passed away, we had talked about what kind of jewelry I would wear with my dress. We talked about me wearing the same jewelry she wore on her wedding day. One of the items she wore was a bracelet, which she borrowed from her FMIL, the Oma I visited this weekend. So, as we sat outside Sunday afternoon, I asked Oma if she still had the bracelet that my mom wore a little over thirty-two years ago. She did, and she was happy to let me borrow it for the wedding. She told me it was originally her mother’s bracelet, but she wasn’t sure how her mother came into possession of it. She even had the original box it came in. I love the picture that was shown on the inside of the box top:

The bracelet is gold, and even though it is a little scratched, I like that it shows its age:

The second piece of jewelry my mom wore was a locket that belonged to my other Oma, my mom’s mom. My mom inherited it when her mom passed away. Unfortunately, I never asked my Oma or my mom the origins of this necklace, so I’m not sure who gave it to Oma or why she received it. It has her initials engraved on the top:

My mother and I share a middle name, which was also my Oma’s first name. I think I might put a picture of both of them in this locket to keep them close to my heart.

I feel so lucky to be able to wear two items that are meaningful pieces to both sides of my family. And now they are even more sentimental to me because my mom wore them first:

Are you wearing any heirloom items on your wedding day? If not, what other meaningful items will you be carrying with you?

Oh, that’s precious! I’ve been trying to figure out a way to honor my mother like that. We never talked about anything like that because she passed away when I was 18. I love this. Thanks for sharing.

What a great post Miss Beagle.

For my wedding, I wore a strand of pearls that was my mom’s mom’s. My grandfather gave her a double strand of pearls for their wedding in 1946. She later had those strands seperated and gave one to my aunt and one to my mom. That is the strand I wore. I also wore a 3 strand pearl and diamond clasped bracelet that was my dad’s mom’s.

I was so happy to be able to wear a piece from each of them, as they both passed away many years ago.

This is a lovely idea.

Miss Beagle, I must say I’ve thought about you a lot since your mother’s passing, even though I only know you through WB and don’t usually post. I had a similar situation, with my mother passing 4 months before my wedding. It was devastating. But I was very thankful to have her pearl earrings and bracelet, ruby ring, and a vintage purse - and I carried/wore them all down the aisle, and also had a photo charm of her made for my bouquet. I get several compliments on my accessories when friends/coworkers look through the pictures - I feel very proud to say those items were my mothers.

I’m wearing my Mom’s garter from her wedding. Its blue, old, and obviously borrowed. My parents have been happily married for 35 years, so hopefully it will bring a little luck to my marriage. I’m also having my paternal grandmother’s wedding ring turned into a pendant and I’m wearing it for the wedding. I’m not sure what I’m going to borrow from my maternal grandmother, but I’d love to incorporate something of hers too. I love the idea of honoring the generations before me.

I just received a fur stole that was my great grandmothers. We share the same initials which are stitched inside.

Beautiful pieces of jewelry you have! What a nice memory :)

That is so sweet! I love this idea. I don’t know what jewelry I’ll wear yet. Maybe it’s time to raid my mother’s jewelry box!

The bracelet is beautiful. I love the first image of the packaging as well.

I carried a handkerchief belonging to my grandmother which I used during a choking incident and a slightly more romantic emotional moment. My hat didn’t belong to anyone in my family but it was an authentic 1920s hat and completed my something old.

Like Rachel, I too had a photo charm made for my weding bouquet. It was a photo of my grandmotherher who passed away two years ago and who raised me since I was a little girl. Many people commented and complimented me on them. I even had one made for each of my bridesmaids bouquets, but instead of a picture I had their initials stamped on the front and a quote put on the back.

My grandmother gave me her pearl necklace from the 1920s. I’m incredibly excited to wear it!
