Mrs. Ramen, Phoenix Age and Occupation: 26, Optometry Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Industrial Designer Engagement Date: January 3, 2009 Wedding Date: December 19, 2009 Venue: Phoenix Art Museum About Me: I'm an SF-born, Seattle-raised girl, transplanted to Phoenix where I'll be getting married, and planning all the way from Orange County where I go to school (yes, it feels as crazy as it sounds). I loooooove Yogurtland, am slightly very obsessed with all things paper, am heavily addicted to wedding blogs, deeply desire a puppy, thoroughly enjoy cooking, cry when I watch (almost all) movies, thrive on solo car-karaoke, can't stop being sarcastic, am neurotic about taking pictures of almost everything I eat before I eat it, and aspire to travel the world. My super-talented fiance and I are attempting to DIY a majority of our massive (~350 guests) "clean & modern, yet romantic, but completely unexpected, with a teeny dash of vintage" wedding, stay within our not-so-massive budget, and somehow get a really luxe (but still fun!) look/feel at the same time. In music terms (since we're both really into music) think Coldplay meets Motown meets Kanye meets Sinatra.

How Google Saved Our Wedding

September 23rd, 2009 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Ramen

I’m a PK (pastor’s kid). I grew up attending bajillions of weddings that my dad has officiated, and I’ve always imagined that I too would get married in a church. How quaintly traditional of me, I know. I never imagined I would get married outside, or on the beach, or on a mountainside, or in a courthouse, or anywhere else. Just a church.

And not just ANY church. I really wanted to get married in a Spanish mission-style church; a church with old-school pews, not theater-style seats, and a semi-long dramatic aisle. Although Phoenix is a very diverse city with a lot of churches, it was still hard to just find one church that could accommodate our then 250-guest wedding (now 350, yikes!), was available on our date, would let us have our own officiant, and wouldn’t charge us an arm and a leg (our little church doesn’t have its own building). Some churches were just ruled out based on their interior decor (think early ’90s purple and teal), size capacity, location (I think our guests would not be happy to drive 30 min+ from the ceremony to the reception), or rental fees (up to $2K and more!).

Notes to my fellow Phoenix brides: A LOT of churches don’t rent out their facilities to non-members! And if they do, you often times have to use their clergy/have them participate in the ceremony. Also, expect church rentals to be in the $800-2,000 range. Seriously. Probably 95% of the churches we looked at were $1500 to rent.

I had only 2 weeks to find a church before I had to leave Phoenix for school again (this was back in February). You can imagine my stress and frustration! I started off my search with some popular large churches in Phoenix and Scottsdale:

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues Central Central United Methodist Church - this church shares a parking lot with our venue, so it would have been really convenient… but they weren’t sure it would be available, since our date is really close to Christmas, and we wouldn’t be able to move their Christmas decor (bright red poinsettias, Christmas trees, etc.).

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues 2081445

Historic First Presbyterian - this church is GORGEOUS! I still love it and sigh every time I drive by it… but it had 2 aisles and I had NO CLUE what to do with the seating arrangements for that. It was really what I wanted, except for the 2 aisles-business. DAH! Plus, parking would be a MESS, as it’s in the middle of downtown Phoenix.

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues Jan F Scottsdale Bible Church - we visited their smaller chapel that is apart from their main campus. It was nice, had a gorgeous stained glass window in front, but had a really short aisle (as you can see in the above picture. That was literally it.).

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues Jan F01 Mr. Ramen showing us the CCC sanctuary

Chaparral Christian Church - BEAUTIFUL! We thought this was it; it had the perfect aisle length, classy decor, lots of room, a bridal room, a big parking lot… until their coordinator contacted us to tell us that they do not allow weddings so close to Christmas. Another bummer.

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues Scottsd La Casa de Cristo Lutheran - this was the kind of church building look I really liked; it’s mission style, etc… but ALAS, we’re not Lutheran. So this was an immediate no-go. I actually didn’t even get to see the inside. They shot me down so fast after I walked into the office. But if you’re Lutheran, I would totally look into this church because it looks beautiful!

First United Methodist - I actually found out about this church because they had a booth at a bridal show, which was a little bit interesting… but they are really nice, their facilities are beautiful (the outside isn’t quite my style, but eh, big deal). Drawbacks? Their Christmas decor can’t be removed AND the coordinator actually suggested that I change my wedding colors to match their decor. AND they already had a wedding booked for earlier that day. (Sorry, I couldn’t find any pictures!)

I also looked into some pretty obscure churches in the area, as well. Translation: I drove around and stopped at EVERY.SINGLE.CHURCH. that I passed. Literally. (Mr. Ramen was mostly busy slaving away at work, so I had to go solo.) There was only one that would have fit the bill.

How Google Saved Our Wedding : wedding venues Jan F02

Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran (I think I stopped by almost every single Lutheran church in the Valley, and was automatically shot down, again, as I’m not Lutheran…) - this was the only Lutheran church that would consider opening their doors to us, since my dad is a pastor. It was cute, but had a pretty short aisle, would have BARELY fit our guests, and was pretty far out in East Scottsdale - too far from our venue.

I was pretty freakin’ desperate at this point, and resorted to Google-mapping “churches in Phoenix” and began clicking on every.single.red.dot. I kid you not. And that’s when it popped up. A church on a little side street called Whitton Avenue Bible Church.

To emphasize just how nice this church is… I took these pictures!!! Uh, they’re not so convincing. Anyway, it looks os much better in real life!

The crazy thing is that this guy that sometimes helps out at our church actually is an elder there, and because they knew of our church, they quickly agreed to let us use the church facilities (and the rental was BY FAR the lowest amount, well under $1k). It was clean and not outdated, they had pews, the aisle was the perfect length, and best of all - we could use any and all of their equipment AND they would take down any Christmas decorations they had that we didn’t want up!!! They are ridiculously awesome. And the “wedding coordinator” is a young guy who is the assistant pastor at the church, who is SOOO chill. SO AWESOME. Again, God perfectly provided for us! You’d think I’d learn to stop stressing by now…

There are a few other churches I checked into, but didn’t have any pictures, etc. So if you Phoenix brides need more options/suggestions… you can always PM me or comment below!

How did you find your ceremony location? Or, did you make life easier for yourself by having the ceremony and reception at the same place?

Wow. Insane who knew having a wedding in a church would be so much drama? I never thought of having a wedding in a church oddly and I have grown up in a church all my life. My venue finding was not as crazy as yours. It was walk in, find out the price and pronounced it perfect.

That’s such a cute church!

We’re getting married in a really old chuch (it’s a Mission actually) and it’s beautiful! I knew before he asked that we would get married there. ;)

That aisle looks perfect! It’s great you found such a good person to work with.

It’s too bad you had to do so much work to find it! Thank goodness for Google!

Looks like you made a great choice, the one thing we both agreed on right away was that we would not be getting married in a church. I wanted to get married where we’re getting married, and originally I was told no it wouldn’t be ready in time. But then magically a couple months after my grandma passed away, I called again and we’re going to be the first wedding since its been redone. Thanks Grandma ;)

That’s awesome! My sister lives in Phoenix (well, right outside of it) and got married in May at Spirit in the Desert. It’s actually located in Carefree - The website is http://www.spiritinthedesert.org. The chapel is gorgeous, as it looks out at the mountains! It’s much to small for what you were looking for, though. But for anyone else, it seats 100 people and I have lots of pictures if you’re interested!

wow. i never knew finding a church could be so stressful. well, maybe it’s because we’re catholic and it was either my church or his. going to any other church would mean a gastronomical site fee. glad you found your church!

WOW - we are going through the same thing, except in Connecticut, and it is no fun church hunting! Our perfect location was booked 13 months in advance, so now we have my pastor from MA who is willing to travel to CT, and no ceremony venue! I never expected this. My fiance wants to do everything in one place, but the backup plan for inclement weather/cold temp in oh so unpredictable New England is having the ceremony on the dance floor. Fiance is willing to bank on the weather…..I can’t and kind of want to go with the non-denominational chapel 45 mins from the reception venue. Can you send me some of your good luck?!!

Aww I always thought I would get married in a church toooo! But our reception place… for mere pennies (ok… like 15000 pennies) we could do the ceremony on the lawn. TOTALLY not what I EVER imagined (city girl no like grass?) but… some green grass and the open sky… God’s church right? :-D

We are getting married at the church we go to where my FI works..so it is free! I wish it was a prettier church, but it is meaningful because it is our church.

I’d never dream of getting married anywhere else other than my church. It’s like another home for me, I started attending on my own (without my family) at age 15. The people took me in as one of their own, welcomed me, loved on me… how could I note return there as a celebration of the love I’ve found :) ?! It also helps that it has a very good area for a reception (”Celebration hall”… a big beautiful octagonal space with ceiling draperies, great acoustics, etc), is inexpensive, and has two choices for a ceremony location… outdoors by the baptismal stream or upstairs in an intimate setting. And, barn weddings? My church IS a converted barn.

We searched high and low for venues period. In the end, I’m so glad we decided to have the wedding in Norfolk so that we could have it at the church at which we’re members. We’re rocking the two aisles and I’m coordinating the Christmas decorations, so we’re figuring out as we go along how to make it work. The church you found looks great!

I’m so glad we were able to use my own church for free (even though it had just as short of an aisle as the one you posted…it was a really short walk!)
Glad you found something affordable and great!
Do you know who will officiate?
