Mrs. Crab Cake's Picture
Mrs. Crab Cake, Columbus, GA Age and Occupation: 25, Registered Nurse Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Director of Education and Living History for a museum Engagement Date: April 6, 2008 Wedding Date: June, 2009 Blogging Since: November 26, 2008 Venue: Holy Family Catholic Church, reception: National Infantry Museum About Me: I'm a perfectionist trying to balance two jobs, motherhood, my craft obsession, and wedding planning. I am obsessed with all things wedding, especially creative ideas for saving money and DIY projects. A Southern Belle at heart, I love anything southern, especially sweet tea, grits, afternoon thunder storms, crab cakes, and good old Southern hospitality. Mr. Crab Cake and I are planning a vintage inspired wedding with tons of Southern flare (can y'all say that with a thick Southern drawl?).
About Mrs. Crab Cake

I really didn’t elaborate much on this before the wedding because there wasn’t much for me to talk about. One of my bridesmaids, AC, is a florist. I never considered hiring anyone but AC to design my florals. In fact, we discussed it before I even met Mr. Crab Cake. This is why I say I sort of DIYed my flowers.

After months of harassing AC about our flowers, she placed the order and had them shipped to my mom’s house where we would take over my brother’s cottage and transform it into a floral design studio!

The first (and probably most important) task at hand was to go to my mom’s house and sign for the delivery. AC was tracking the delivery from her home in Texas and told me that the flowers should be delivered by 10AM EST. I got to my mom’s house around 8:30, and prepared to settle in and work on some projects while waiting on the delivery. I was surprised to see my mother’s boyfriend there and decided that I’d let him sign, gave him instructions, and went on my merry way. (After all, I had a ton of errands left to run that morning!)

About an hour later, AC called and said according to FedEx, the flowers had been delivered, but there was a notation on the tracking site that said wrong address.

My first reaction was a reasonable one. My mom lives in a historic district where backyard studio cottages are a normal thing. Our cottage happens to have its own little address (1540 1/2) and I had instructed mom’s BF to have the flowers put in the cottage, so that must have been the problem. Nevertheless, I drove straight back to Mom’s to check it out. Much to my dismay, my flowers weren’t there. This is when I started panicking. AC was on the phone with FedEx trying to locate my flowers and my mother’s BF and I were frantically walking up and down my mom’s neighborhood looking on people’s porches for a giant box of flowers. No lie. I even stopped a little old lady weeding her garden to interrogate her about whether or not she’d seen the FedEx truck on the street. Ten minutes passed, and there was still no word from my bridesmaid. Mom’s BF was three blocks away and I was pacing in front of the house. Off in the distance, I heard the characteristic rumble of a large truck (y’all know what I’m talking about!) and start to get excited. As the truck crested the hill leading up to Mom’s house, I saw the most beautiful site I’d ever seen: that white FedEx truck coming over the hill. Never have I loved FedEx so much.

Apparently, the address was one street off on the shipping label, but correct on the packing slip (Thank God). Hooray for diligent FedEx delivery men!

AC arrived from Texas later that evening and we got to work processing the flowers. Basically, we just clipped the ends of the stems and stuck them in buckets of water. Easy enough.

The next morning we set to work putting together the arrangements. My brother’s cottage smelled better than it ever had and I was so thrilled with how pretty our flowers looked hanging out in their buckets.

AC started putting together bouquets. The first one she finished ended up being the Maid of Honor’s bouquet.

Bridesmaid TK is getting married next June and considering arranging her own flowers, so she took lessons from AC.

Yes, we were drinking while we worked!

By the time supper time rolled around, we had finished all the bouquets except mine, boutonnieres, and church arrangements. I’ll save the pretty for later. I don’t want to spoil all the details!

Did you/will you have flowers delivered to your home for you to arrange? How many days before the wedding did you/will you have your flowers delivered?

I LOVE the FedEx man too! He had to deliver my ring to the hotel. I also had bulk flowers shipped, but my wedding coordinator did all the work and arranged the bouquets.

You all did a wonderful job! I probably would have been interrogating old women too if I were you!

I did my own flowers, but we used artificials, so I was able to do them about 30 days ahead of time! Such a good feeling knowing they were done and hanging in the spare room!

I had my flowers shipped too and they were almost delivered to the wrong house… luckily I was standing on the porch making phone calls (the cell phone reception at our cabin sucked!) and saw him pull up, take the boxes to the house next door. I was like umm… are those flowers? Cause I believe they are supposed to go to this house! He was really nice about it though.

I’m hoping to arrange my own flowers. My dad’s cousin is a florist, and always willing to help, so I’m hoping he’ll jump in and give us lessons!

Wow that’s a gorgeous bouquet! My mom is a florist so I’m leaving it all in her hands. I couldn’t help her- I’m useless when it comes to arranging flowers. lol
