Bows!

September 28th, 2009 @ 5:14 pm by Mrs. Chick

So, you guys know how much I love flower accents for our bridesmaids. I’ve found so many different flower belts, flower combs, and hair clips. Today, I found something that’s possibly even better, something that really suits my personality! My sister has always made fun of me for my Hello-Kitty-like obsession with bows. I love bow necklaces, earrings, dresses—really, if a bag a dog poo had a bow on it, I would probably buy it. ANYways, take a look at these!

(Thanks to Brooklyn Bride for this discovery. All items can be purchased from the Etsy shop of A Alicia Handmade Accessories)

At $40 to $65 a pop, these babies are pretty pricey. However, they look pretty darn easy to DIY, don’t you think? I’m not a huge fan of the netting over the felt (although I can totally see a bride wearing a birdcage veil with her bridesmaids wearing these brooches/corsages! That would be a nice way to tie the whole party together). What would be an appropriate material for a spring wedding? I thought felt, or maybe a velvet wire lined ribbon, but is that too wintery? I am vetoing silk or the traditional ribbon material because it doesn’t look very substantial.

I would like mine to be three bows of different pinks, pinned on to the waist of the bridesmaids’ dresses, or maybe we could make them into a belt. Or, we could pin them as a brooch on the chest. Do you guys remember in Sex and the City, when Charlotte married Trey, how Carrie had a Scottish ribbon type thing pinned to her belt?

(I couldn’t find an image of it for the life of me, so I had to do a screen grab of the scene from YouTube. Sorry for the poor quality!)

Okay, this was right after Aiden broke up with her, so it’s not the happiest memory, but back to more important things like FASHION. There was a spread about bows in dresses in the latest InStyle Wedding issue, I believe. One of the featured dresses in there was this beauty from Vera Wang:

What are your thoughts about brooches or bows on bridesmaid dresses? How would you incorporate them into your bridal party?

Such sweet bows. I considered doing that, but I’m not sure if it would work with the BM dress-look we’re going for.

I’d love wearing them on a shirt/sweater like shown in those pictures though!!

@fiftyfootbride: Woo yes. Also very cute on blazers! That’s an idea: after the wedding the BMs can use them to pin onto blazers or sweaters!

I love how many fun ways there are to embellish an outfit - and the bows are a nice change from the big flower pins we’ve been seeing (though I love those too!).

I Heart Bows too! Which is of course why I had one on my wedding dress :) I think it’s a wonderful idea to put them on your bridesmaids- I love the idea of them being able to use them later for blazers

I too love bows and my BM dress has a belt/bow/skinny sash arounf the waist BUT I think we are going to swithc it out for something a bit more dramatic which will have a bow. My MOH, however, does not share my love of bows so we’ll see how this plays out.

For a wedding I was in last year, our dresses had a sash at the waist and it was always shown in photos tied in a bow. However, the 8 of us could not get our bows to look like same to save our lives. So, we ended up tying the sash in a square knot, letting the ends hang down, and pinning large costume jewlery brooch overtop of the knot! It was a cute compromise, and now I have the brooch on my winter coat to add some bling!

I found Alicia’s shop through my daily Etsy browsing. I’ve convoed with her a little and she’s a doll! I’m sure she would be willing to do custom items without the netting if it’s not the look you’d want. They’d make lovely bridesmaids gifts that the ladies could wear afterward! Very fashion forward. :)

My girls’ dresses had (I think they’re called) an “obi” bow along the waist — and it made them look so chic :-)

I love bows and flowers, but for my girls I only suggested I “could” make some for them, if they wanted to, so far only MOH wants some
