Visiting Chicago-Area Venues

September 29th, 2009 @ 4:38 pm by Mrs. Parfait

Mr. Parfait and I started our search for the perfect venue online. We searched for museums, lofts, theaters, and other unique places to host a wedding reception. Amazingly, we have almost the exact same tastes. We like clean, modern spaces that are bare enough to personalize… which is why the River East Arts Center jumped out to us as the clear front-runner in the race to become our venue. I mean, honestly, take a look at these pictures!

The space, undecorated

The space as we would set it up, but with different colors

The space, looking as sultry as walls and floors can look

Sadly, we ruled this place out pretty quickly for several reasons. First, our vendors are in the suburbs, and it would be a hassle to get everything to the city. Second, the venue fee plus catering was beyond our meager budget. And finally, Mr. Parfait and I can look at venue pictures all day, but when it comes to looking for caterers, we have no patience at all. So our next thought was… let’s find a place nearby that has in-house catering! Our search words switched from museums and lofts to banquet halls and restaurants. We visited three venues in Oakbrook, a town close to us and about 30 minutes from Chicago:

My family has been to several shows at this classy theater, and Mr. Parfait’s family frequents their Christmas brunch. Drury Lane was also the location of our high school prom––that’s more of a fun fact than a selling point. :P When we visited, I loved walking into the lobby with their plush red carpets and glittering chandeliers––it made me feel like getting all glammed up! The prices were within our budget, and the staff had tons of experience with special events. The downside? The catering director said she often has five weddings happening at a time. That sounded too busy for us, so we moved on.

The Doubletree looked plain on the outside, but I liked the modern lobby. The ballroom had pretty ceilings, and we could use their shiny, black grand piano for our cocktail hour. We met with their wedding planner, and she was friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive to our ideas and budget. Of all the catering directors and reception coordinators we’d met so far, she was the one we’d be happiest to work with. However, their prices meant we’d have to keep looking.

Nearby, we found:

The Grotto. It was the only place Mr. Parfait visited without me. The restaurant has a beautiful brick exterior and luxuriously large leather chairs in the foyer. He liked the atmosphere, but its wedding packages were not as all-inclusive as we were getting accustomed to seeing. Next, we visited a place even closer to home:

Visiting Chicago-Area Venues : wedding venues 71 venue4

The first Naperville venue we visited was Hotel Arista. We loved their dedication to being a sustainable hotel and their glossy new ballroom. The prices were too steep for us, and we guessed that the price tag had to do with the all-local and organic menu. If that’s the top priority for a couple, I’d highly recommend Hotel Arista–it’s really beautiful and new, and the staff made us feel very welcome.

The search continued! I really wanted to find a place in our hometown. I knew there must be a hidden gem someplace nearby!

Was your venue search long and tedious, or did you know exactly where you wanted to host your reception?

Definitely long and tedious! We looked and looked…and then realized the first place we saw was in fact perfect, and signed the contract. Advice to brides-to-be: Don’t do that to yourself! ;-)

Our venue search was actually pretty short, in hindsight. There really aren’t very many venues to choose from around here! I would have loved a modern loft or a museum setting!

Hi!
I got married this past august at the South Shore Cultural Center in Chicago (76th and South Shore Drive). It’s not modern but it’s absolutely beautiful and photographs fantastically. I’d be happy to send pictures if you like =-)

Hotel Arista looks awesome! We booked the first venue we looked at! It was just perfect for us–we definitely got lucky.

I absolutely love reading about Chicago bees! Being a Chicago bride myself, I crave the “vendor inspiration”. We are getting married at our church in the City and having our reception at The Catalyst Ranch.

I absolutely adore River East, but it just wasnt our style. You’ll see what I mean just by googling Catalyst Ranch.

I cant wait to see where you end up!!

I continue to bang my head against my keyboard looking at venues every day. It would be so much easier if we could just get married out in some vineyard in western va (like we both want), but we are limited to places within a reasonable distance from either our church or our parent’s church. Of course if we had tons of money we could have our pick, but that’s not a option for us either.

I can’t wait to see where you guys decide!

Venues are such a pain aren’t they? But when you find one everything will fall into place! Good luck!

Definitely check out Joliet’s Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, IL. My friend was married there this past June. You can see her pics on Jessicaclaire.net under Lee and Derek. It was beautiful!

the first place was so nice! esp between the before and after pics!!

our process was somewhat long and tedious. okay, very tedious. :-P Since the mister is busy in school, I did all the online research of finding places and prices and presenting it all in an excel sheet. :]

Our initial search was short; I knew before we got engaged where I wanted the ceremony and the reception. It was a no brainer…

The long, tedious, and stressful part came when our original reception venue went out of business… less than 4 months before our wedding! I guess the search to find another venue wasn’t “long” in the span of several months, but long in the aspect of calling over 30 vendors who were all booked and having to visit dumps as they were the only venues available!

Luckily, after a month of NOT settling on any of those dumps- and my friends and family telling me that I was too picky and to just pick one of the dumps already- we found a hidden gem. It was never used for a wedding before as it was once an old bank building in the 1920s, has been restored since. It was a 2 story ballroom and was so exquisite inside, in fact, it was 100 times better than our original spot! We got lucky!!

Beautiful!

Our search for the venue was nonexistent. My parents have a plantation home, and ever since I was little I knew I wanted to have the reception here. Blame Father of the Bride!

I still haven’t seen my venue in person, I wish I could’ve looked around some more. But, from what I here, it’s just right. Can’t wait to see what you find.

@meemers: Ooh, I remember looking them up online. Is that where President Obama and Michelle got married?

@ChiDIY: Me, too! I loved reading about all the other Chicago bee’s experiences.

@Miss Chick: Thanks, Chick!

@tenmylove: I love when things work out like that. Lucky you!

@Lauren: We were thinking about visiting that place! I’d love to find a place right in Downtown Naperville. I’m planning on plenty of Riverwalk pictures. :)
