About Miss Frozen Yogurt

Blushing Bride

October 1st, 2009 @ 12:49 pm by Miss Frozen Yogurt

I have a confession. I am a major blusher.

It’s plagued me for as long as I can remember, and I hate it! Nothing is worse to me than feeling that rush of blood to my face, only to realize that my emotions (nervousness, anxiety, etc.) are on display for everyone to see. I’ve read all the things on the internet about how to stop blushing. Yeah, they don’t work for me. I am a major blusher, remember? Not one of those “add some color to your cheeks” cute blushers. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to roll with it… sort of.

However––enter the wedding.

I’m really looking forward to the wedding. But the cameras, video cameras, guests, and microphones… they’re all a little scary to me. The last thing I want to worry about is whether or not I am going to blush when I’m sharing those special words with Mr. Fro Yo.

So what’s a girl to do? Well, I learned about this prescription medication that performers take before they go on stage to calm their nerves and to prevent stage fright. Now you might be thinking, ‘woah Miss Fro Yo, that’s a little extreme,’ but honestly I don’t know what I would do without it! I call it my anti-blushing medication and I currently use it when I have to give major presentations at work. It definitely works for me. For those of you that aren’t blushers, you probably didn’t even realize what a big deal blushing is, and I can only speak for myself, but to me it’s a huge deal. Now with my trusty stage fright fighting prescription, that’s one less thing I have to worry about on my wedding day.

Phew! Are you anxious about any physical traits of yours on your wedding day?

I’m in the same boat but I never knew there was anything that could be done about it. Every interview I’ve ever gone on, every presentation, I get a whole red face - I wish it was just my cheeks that blushed. I am for sure going to look into this! I was mainly worried about doing a goofy smile all day long and had never considered blushing - but now that I think about it it’s a legit concern. Great post!

I don’t blush, but my ears get really hot and turn brigt red if I feel threatened or really embarresed (sometimes it happens for no reason, too– ehhh). I almost always wear my hair up at work, so on big days (reviews or presentations) I wear it down!

For my wedding, I’m definately going to do something like a loose half up style to cover up/distract from the potential, dreaded, RED EAR!

I have the exact same problem! But I never knew there was a prescription that helped with that. Would you PM me the name of it, so I can look into it? My plan so far had just been makeup + Clinique’s Redness Reduction line.

I can be a blusher too. If it’s anxiety, there’s an all natural thing called rescue remedy- I saw it to help dogs with separation anxiety, but saw it’s for humans, it’s just safe for dogs. I’m not sure how it will do for blushing, but it’ll help with anxiety! I even use it sometimes :P

Got the same problem as you. I really hate it when I blush even with the simplest conversation. And I even get redder as soon as I know that they are looking at me because I am literally turning red. Great that you are going to take some meds just to stop yourself from getting red. Enjoy your day!

I’m also a bigger blusher and it’s the worst thing at work. Makes me feel like an insecure child.

I never knew there was a script for it!

I have the same problem. I was worried about it for my wedding but with everything going on and with all the excitement you completely forget and I had no blushing! I am curious to know what the prescription is though? I have never heard of such a thing!

I’m a blusher. I never really knew it until my freshman year of college when I became friends with a group of guys who, once they figured it out, looooooved to make me blush (Mr Spin was a member of that group ^_^). I don’t worry about it too much, honestly, but I’m looking into redness reducing makeup too.

I am a FLUSHER! My cheeks get red when I get anxious/nervous/stressed, but so does my entire chest!!! BAD!!! Luckily I have an entire year to get this under control, but I have no idea how to fix it. Dermatologist here I come!

I used to have this all through highschool… was so embarassing. I would even blush when I WASN’T nervous just because I was ANTICIPATING blushing and was embarassed about it. It was a bad cycle. I think for me it was more of an emotional/self confidence thing and less of a physical thing, over the years as I’ve aged my self confidence has improved and I’ve become more comfortable in my own skin. One think taht really helped for me was taking a kickboxing course - it made me feel stronger, more assertive… kind of hard to explain but I felt like I could put myself “out there” without feeling like I needed to shirk (is that a word?), I could just be me and be confident. I still occasionally blush like crazy when I am caught off guard and someone asks me something I wasn’t prepared to answer, or when I run into certain kinds of people (you know, the ones that come right into your cubicle and ask you semi-personal questions or take a great interest in you, and you’d prefer the attention wasn’t on you) , but it’s a lot better than it was 10 years ago. Hopefully you’ll “outgrow” it a bit as well too. :)

The prescription I take is a beta blocker called propranolol. Not saying it’s for everyone, and definitely ask your doctor about it, but seriously, it’s a lifesaver for me. Mr. Fro Yo will even ask me if I my anti-blushing meds before I leave for work on days he knows I have big presentations.

I feel your pain! And there’s nothing like someone saying “Aww, you’re blushing” to make it EVEN WORSE! Thank you for the tip on the medication. Does it affect your mood at all or is it purely skin-related?

I hate how I blush when I don’t even know it! And when I think I’m blushing (that blood rushing sensation), I’m not. UGH. And I’m definitely not one of those girls who gets all cute and flushed - it’s the same when I work out, I just get red. ick. That’s awesome that you found something to take care of it!

Oh my gosh, me too! Like red from the neck up. I can usually feel it coming on to and there is nothing I can do to stop it. It even happens when I get nervous about doing something small, like asking my boss a simple question. It is terrible!

I had no idea there was a prescription. Miss FroYo, do you take one and it works the whole day? Or does it only last a few hours and you need to take it right before?

i didn’t know there was medication for that! wow. the things you learn.

i’m not particularly nervous. i tend to shine in the spotlight and even when i blush, my skin tone’s a bit darker so it just looks rosy.

Oh my gosh! I hadn’t thought of this, but definatley will need some form of Beta blocker. I get red on my cheeks, and then get SPLOTCHES on my chest. Not great for photos that I’ll be paying big bucks for!

Miss Mouse do you know if its ok to consume alcohol after taking a Beta blocker?

@polkadot: Yes, so mean!! It doesn’t effect my mood. The anti-anxiety meds just made me want to take a nap and did nothing for my blushing
@rachel_leigh: I just take it when I need to, and yes just one about 30-45 min before the “blush inducing” event. Oh, it’s my whole neck and chest too, splotchy everywhere!
@CHK: My doctor told me that he even took it on his wedding day! And he said it was safe to drink alcohol with.

OMG, I had no idea other people had this problem too! I hate how red I get, and alike Miss Ramen, my entire face turns red when I work out as well. I always turn completely red when I give presentations, and it is really embarassing. I am definitely going to ask my doctor about this!

I have the same exact problem!! It is so bad that people I work with will ask if if I’m ok after presentations. I don’t feel any different than the average nervous presenter, but it all just shows on my face (and neck-do you get that too?). I tried propanolol, but it made me feel jittery and a bit sick. I switched to an anti-anxiety medication (lorazepam) that is designed to only be taken once in a while. There is not risk of becoming addicted because I only take it a couple of times a month. It helped sooooooo much for my wedding (and shower, and work, and… the list goes on). It does make you a bit drowsy, but when you have a big event where adreneline is pumping through your veins, the drowsiness is non-existent. I even took it before bed the night before the wedding to help me get a good night’s sleep. You do have to be careful with this medication, though. You can’t drink with it (I had a glass or two of champagne several hours after taking it) and you can’t mix it with other meds. It really works wonder for me!

It’s interesting that so many of us are affected by the rampant blushing! Of course growing up I thought I was the only one! I used to dread having an actual wedding ceremony because everyone would be looking at me & I knew I would be bright red. As it’s getting closer to the wedding, I’m less worried about it since we are only inviting family and close friends, but I think trying the meds might still be worth it for me. Not only for our ceremony but for work presentations, etc. Thank you so much for posting this!

Wow Ms. Fro Yo I have to say thanks for this post! I think it’s kind of funny that we all felt like we were the only ones that experienced this. I blush about so many things like being in front of people or when the attention is all on me that it has really made me a bit nervous about my wedding as well. My friends even joke about things that “make me blotchy.” I really wasn’t sure if there was a solution or what doctor you’d even talk about this, but I will definitely have to look into it! Did you just talk to your regular primary care doctor?

@Irishbride85: Yep, I just went to my primary care and told him that I was interested in taking beta blockers because I blush like a mo-fo. He laughed and said he understood (which made me blush, why? I don’t know)

I start sweating when I’m anxious, but that’s not a big deal. I have terrible acne though. My derm and I finally found a medication that’s working. Hopefully it holds out for another three months. After the wedding, I don’t care what I look like.

I blush & face sweats BAD! Like you, I can feel the heat come over my face! Literally I feel the heat start at my forhead and then go down my face to my neck, and its an instant flush of red & sweat! The good thing is that this only happens if I’m say “caught in the act” like a kid getting caught with his hands in the cookie jar, or if I lie it happens. So usually when I’m happy its cool! Plus I enjoy being the center of attention, so I don’t think that will trigger any sweats, unless I have a creeper moment!

Miss Fro-Yo and the rest of you ladies are a lifesaver!! I love how all of you talk about called them your “blotchies” and all that ’cause that TOTALLY happens to me too. It’s funny how you think you are alone sometimes and it turns out there are SO many people that have the same thing! I get it all over my face, neck, chest and shoulders. It’s horribly embarrassing. I’m definitely going to have a chat about this with my doctor. *Blushers Unite!*

Oh my gosh, I hadn’t even thought about blushing! I’m also a major blusher, even just answering questions in class when no one is looking at me can turn me bright red. I turn red when I work out too, sometimes for up to an hour afterwards. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I’m definitely going to have to get some beta blockers before my wedding since I’m already dreading being in the center of attention all day long. Thank goodness for you Miss Fro-Yo!
Oh, has anyone tried the Clinique Redness Reduction powder? Does it work? I could use something for everyday.

Me too! I can’t believe it is so common because everyone else seems to think it is such a fun thing to make fun of :D I turn so red my mother tells me I go purple, and the fair skin really doesn’t help!

I will second what MountainBride said: I was so caught up in the wedding day activities that I forgot to blush! There are pictures where it looks like I am a blushing bride (in the pretty way), but no beet red face anywhere in sight! This is impressive, considering I am like many others here: I’ll go red just thinking of going bright red (actually, it’s happening right now). It also helped that I was so anxious about it raining during the ceremony (it didn’t, luckily) that I completely forgot to stress myself out ahead of time about it.

I am grateful to find out about this solution since I have to speak in public on occasion for my job (seriously - how did that happen?). I’ll also look into rescue remedy (which we always used in our family for shock and injuries) - I never knew it was good for anxiety (Thanks pmerr!)

I have some issues with redness on my face, and I’ve been successful with the Clinique Redness Relief line. I think I have pretty mild roseaca actually, which gets worse when I’m stressed, tired or drinking. I actually made a point not to drink very much at the reception because I didn’t want my cheeks to look like tomatoes!

Alright so after feeling so alone with my blotchy chest/face issues for years, it appears lots of other people suffer from the same mess. Sort of good to know I’m not alone. But sort of a bummer that so many of us have to deal with it!
@Jessie516: I have roseaca, and you’re right, drinking does make it worse, at least for me.

While you don’t have to worry about not touching a sip of celebratory champagne with propranolol, I would still be a bit cautious. Most of you weddingbee ladies seem to be a bit classier than my friends (and myself) who get pretty drinky at weddings. Propranolol and other beta-blockers decrease your heartrate. Alcohol is a depressant, which decreases your respiratory rate. Usually your body counteracts the effect of alcohol by raising your heartrate so your brain still gets the oxygen it needs, and it is much more difficult to do that with betablockers on board. I’m not a doctor, but it just seems like one more reason (besides avoiding a hangover on your first morning as a married woman) to drink in moderation that evening.

I’m such a blusher too… It’s just so annoying, isn’t it? You want to hide your emotions, but your face betrays you. One solution I know would be to go sunbathing, to have sun-burnt cheeks, and then when you blush, you can just pretend it’s sunburn and not blushing. But then, it’s not a very healthy solution skin-wise.
