About Miss Parfait

Comfy, Cozy Favors

October 1st, 2009 @ 3:24 pm by Miss Parfait

Spring is a wishy-washy month, especially in Chicago. For example:

  • I’ve always had Spring Breaks from school in late March. The trouble with having Spring Break in late March is that it feels eerily like Winter Break, Part Two. Brrr.
  • My birthday is in May. I remember many hot, sunny birthdays in years past. I also remember times when it snowed on my birthday!
  • At the end of the last school year, people were still wearing coats to school. My students and I spent the last week shivering and sitting cross-legged to warm up our frozen toes. Thanks, month of June!

When our April wedding rolls around next year, I’d love to give favors or gifts that would help our guests stay warm and cozy! I think the following pictures captured the most considerate and useful favors I have seen:

favors1

Blankets from Snippet and Ink

favors2

Pashminas from Heidi Ryder Photography

I would be thrilled to receive either of these at a wedding! I can think of a few pros and cons to these cozy favors:

Cons:

  • Soooo costly.
  • Appealing to ladies, not so much to men.
  • Added bulk that may not fit in already-packed suitcases.
  • Did I mention costly? Especially for a crowd of 200+.

Pros:

  • Useful in daily life.
  • A lovely gift in any situation.
  • A pleasure to have leftovers. :P
  • Not a proclamation of our names and wedding date.

These pictures are definitely pros:

What do you think—do the pros outweigh the cons?

Oh my gosh, I would LOVE to get one of those at a wedding! It doesn’t make sense for us in April because it could definitely be really hot in Texas. But I love them.

Blankets would work for both men and women and you could get a way with giving one out per couple or household….

I’m entertaining the same pashmina idea for our June wedding! But like you said… costly. Even if you could find nice ones for an inexpensive individual price, it would still add up.

How many women are on your guest list? I wouldn’t worry about the other cons (women vs. men, bulky suitcase) though! I love scarves and throws, and I don’t think most guys would care if they were left out. :)

i definitely think the pros outweigh the cons if you find a great wrap that can be used again. I would definitely go with solid colors rather than patterns, which i have seen given before. I think it’s a great gift & i don’t think that the guys really care too much… maybe have something edible for guys! That usually makes them happy!

Oh I love this idea - but I can certainly understand how the cost could add up with 200+ guests. Will your budget allow this project? Otherwise, I love everything about it!!

What about if you used 40% off coupons and bought yards of fleece from JoAnns? Then just gave one per family? I love this idea, but I understand too why it may be cost prohibitive.

Haha, no one would have wanted a wrap or pashmina in August heat we were having in Philly — but I think it’d be a great idea if it were cooler on your wedding day!

I love the idea of having wraps/blankets. It just makes me sigh with cozy delight. :)

I love that idea!! I was thinking about using it in my BFF’s bachelorette survival kit (were going to NAPA in Jan!) But I was thinking about getting in NYC from street vendors for like $5!! They’re still very pretty and great quality, I have several different colors!

Miss Parfait, I am also from Chicagoland and totally commiserate on this year’s less than summery weather! Our wedding is in May, and we haven’t a clue what the weather will be like (rain, snow, overbearing heat???) Chicago in April can be brrrrr so I totally understand wanting to have the blankets! If you go with this idea I’d say get the little fleece blankets like in the first picture; then they appeal to men and women! Maybe there is somewhere that sells them in bulk for cheap? Or maybe the dollar spot at Target, or dollar store? Do they ever have anything like that? Probably wouldn’t be able to get your wedding colors though… Good luck- I think it’s an approproate gift for this area!

As a Chicago girl, I would love that :), but I can see how it’d be a lot of money.

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: haha, I’m in the same boat! We’re also getting married in April in Texas and I keep thinking “well…maybe there will be a cold front…then I can incorporate blankets!!”

I think it would be a great favor to receive! I’d keep it and use it afterward for sure.

I’m gonna buck the trend and say tjat the pros don’t outweigh the cons… it seems SO expensive, and while it’s potentially useful I feel like it’s the sort of thing people might leave behind, and it’s definitely more lady-centric. Now, if you had a blanket that had a cool design on it related to y’all or your wedding, that would be different… it would also be more expensive though! Maybe not a pashmina (too girly) or a blanket (awkward to put on when you’re wearing a suit, for the men), a straight-up scarf would work… or getting something else for the dudes is an option. Aside from budget issues, the guys are really the root of the problem :)

I certainly understand where the idea comes from though. I went to college in Chicago and while I love the cubs, going to those early-season games was pretty painful.

Have you thought about scarves that you make yourself? Ala Mrs. Pineapple’s scarf favors!?!? http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/10/09/mom-pineapple-did-me-a-huge-favor/ Could be a less expensive and yet still warm option!

I am doing the same idea for my Feb wedding and you know what I found would help with the price? Going on Alibaba.com and sourcing it wholesale.

We are doing this for our wedding next week. The church we’re using has no heat or electricity. I looked for blankets first, but I figured these would be more fun. Plus, men get to wear suits while ladies might have bare arms and legs! And who doesn’t love a good photo op?

We got ours from http://www.fashionunic.com for $3.75 each. We only got them for the ladies.

We are also having favors - dollar scratch tickets in a little envelope with a penny. Our reception site is a Casino (it’s an old building that’s just kept that name) so we thought that was cute.

Overall, it was around $2.75 per person.

@jduck84: I love them, too! I’m estimating about 100 women on the guest list.

@Miss_Carmel: Favors weren’t in our original budget, but I’m planning to make at least a little room for them!

@Miss Lamb: Thanks for the suggestion! Gotta love those coupons. :P

We are getting married at the end of October in Texas, which is ALWAYS a coin toss, if its cold, it won’t be THAT cold, just chilly. So, I thought about doing this, when I told the FI he put his foot down and said no, LOL it was the first thing he said no to, but I agree its not necissary, but darn it, it sure is cute!

@alohababy28 & @Miss Yap: I never would’ve thought of looking at these places–thanks!

@Lisa & @Mrs. French Bulldog: Oh yeah! I remember reading about that. I’m glad you reminded me of it!

@Grey56: I love your tickets + penny idea, and that is a great price! Congrats on your upcoming wedding. :D

I think they’re definitely a great idea - and I don’t know that you have to have enough for every single person…

i think it would be nice. you can probably get about enough for the ladies that will be in attendance and just make them available. not everyone will take one so that could work in your favor, costwise

I think those would be great favors. I live in Michigan so I definitely know how the weather can be in the spring and I think that your guests would really appreciate them. I know I’d love them!

I looove those! I would love that as a gift any time ( ok maybe I would not wear it in the summer, but in that case I would save them to use later) :)

I’m with you on the spring breaks and May birthday! But it did make it great when I went to Hawaii last year during the cold front that was my birthday! (Try Michigan, one day it’s 70, the next there’s snow!)

I found this web site still would cost but if you could use them as chair covers as well then that would also cut the cost of renting chair covers.
the shawls start at 7.99 for bulk rate.

They’re cute, but for me, the cost would probably outweigh the benefits. I noticed you said that favors were not originally in your budget, so I would probably be hesitant to add such a large cost if it’s only for favors… Is there any other warm/cozy idea that you would be able to incorporate at a less expensive cost?

They are nice but I wouldn’t do them. First of all, you don’t know what it will be like weather wise. It could be really hot and then all of them would go to waste. Secondly, if it is cold, most women would bring their own wrap just in case. I think you’ll be happier putting the money somewhere else. If it does look like its going to be chilly, serve a cappuchino/hot chocolate bar (there are vendors that provide neat carts) with fun add-ins like flavors and marshmallows. That would be less than the wraps but still be a neat way to warm people up.

I think blankets are so sweet! You could ask them to be returned and donate them to a local homeless shelter!

Plus if you make them yourselves (not too hard) you can wait for sales and save $

@Buttercupfields: I love the idea of using them as chair covers…but it’s the legs of our chairs that really bother me. Hmm!

@canegirl08: Hot chocolate bar?! Now that would be awesome. :)

@LatteLove: I never thought of that either. Thanks for the suggestion!

Awesome! Yeah, I guessed at once you’d say they’re costly, but I do love favors that are useful and not just for display & remembrance. It’s just that usually those kind of favors are really more expensive.
