Mrs. Beagle, Austin Age and Occupation: 26, Electrical Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Finance Engagement Date: July 12, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Church Ceremony/Reception at The Waterford House About Me: I am a true, but rare, Austinite---I was born, raised, and continue to live in this great city! Although I am an engineer by day, I feed my inner creative side through crafting, sewing, and obsessing over Martha Stewart. I love coffee, my mister, NPR, and exploring all the nooks and crannies of Austin. I can't wait to share my adventures in DIY and wedding planning with all of you!
About Mrs. Beagle

I think my biggest fear about our wedding is that no one will dance at the reception, and that it will be boring and our guests won’t have fun. I worry that our families and friends won’t mix and mingle. I think it all boils down to our playlist, which we have yet to get started on because, really, we don’t know where to start!

I’ve got the dinner music down and, though I haven’t blogged about it yet, our cocktail hour is covered. The only thing left is the “dance” music. Here’s the problem: My family listens to primarily to country/western. His family listens to Tejano & Oldies. We listen to NPR (and KUT, if you’re in Austin… but for the most part they play mellow music). :) We don’t go dancing, we’re not taking lessons, and more than likely our first dance (which is still undecided) will consist of the 6th grade sway a la the Candy Corns (although I doubt we will be able to pull off their awesomeness).

So what do we play?

I would love to incorporate a good mix of country, oldies, tejano, ’80s, and modern music. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated—we need your help!!!

What are/were must plays on your playlist? What music/songs brought the most people onto the dance floor?

Oldies were really popular at our wedding, and got everyone on the dance floor. Our DJ also did an amazing job creating dance mixes, and transitioning seamlessly from one great song to the next. Here’s a link to the song ideas section of the entertainment company’s site we used for the wedding: http://tonersound.com/songideas.php

“Hey Ya”. EVERYONE IN THE ROOM started moving when this song started.

I agree with oldies - our guests loved them!

I think any and everyone can appreciate and dance to some 80’s Madonna, we’re also planning on some Al Green. :)

I’m so afraid of that too! We love a lot of music, but some of it is sort of obscure like, indie-electronic. Or has lots of nasty words. Some of the older guests might not like that. At all. Or I just wouldn’t do that. Meh. :(

I don’t have any suggestions, but this is a great post—I have the same fear! I’ll be checking back for everyone’s suggestions. :)

I have the same fear, too! We plan on oldies and some 80s/90s stuff, with some really popular songs from this decade (even if we don’t like them) just so people will dance!

You have to play the electric slide! Some people totally hate it, but I secretly love it :).

These were the songs that had the most packed dance floor at our wedding:

The Cha-Cha Slide
Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti
I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas
Pon de Replay by Rihanna

I still smile and do a little dance inside when I hear Say Hey on the radio. My husband and I had soooo much fun dancing to that one!

Any kind of line dancing, like Cupid’s Shuffle and Cha Cha slide mixed in throughout the night. The kind that have the directions in the songs are my favorite. I’m going to try to follow those up with 80’s and 90’s songs that are up beat that everyone knows, and hope it keeps everyone out there. I hope it works.

Why don’t you ask your guests what type of music they would like to dance to? We put that on our RSVPs and the responses have been great. We know we can accomodate everyone but we’ll give the list to the DJ so that he knows what people like.

80’s all the way! Some of my faves are “Come On Eileen”, “Safety Dance”, “Wake Me Up Before You Go”, and “Just Can’t Get Enough.” The tunes are happy and upbeat and most people recognize them.

I think the 80s and even some 70s are songs that everyone says “hey, I’ve havn’t heard that in forever” and for the older people, it takes them back.

Any line dancing? The Cupid Shuffle is always great. And what about some Temptations? A little Taylor Swift can’t hurt. Abba?

I always recommend “Say Hey” by Michael Franti and Spearhead - it just makes me wanna jump up and dance and I’ve seen it do the same to other people as well!
Boots On - Randy Houser
All Shook Up - Elvis
Black Eyed Peas - Lets Get it Started or I Got a Feeling
Chuck Berry- Johnny B Goode
The twist
Maybe some Faith Hill or Carrie Underwood or JoDee Messina?
I’m A Believer - Monkees
Kelly Clarkson can be fun to dance to.

I’ve got more where that came from - but there’s a little country, oldies, and new stuff in there

Right there with you Miss Beagle…our list is due to our DJ soon…and we’ve just NOW started it. We only know what our dance song will be…nothing else. Not ceremony, not reception, cocktail hour, dinner hour…nada…

Just a lil FYI from a fellow tejana, make sure you throw in some Ramon Ayala, Little Joe y La Familia, La Mafia, Albert Zamora or even Jaime y Los Chamacos. These groups have great dance music like norteno and cumbias and you can’t go wrong with that!

If you want people to get out on the dance floor make sure you play songs they know.. start with classic fun oldies and then lead up to some newer stuff. I had the same fears for my reception but we ended up having a packed dance floor the whole night!! People didn’t want to leave it!

Did you check out Ms. Cowboy-boot’s playlist post? She had a lot of good ones. And I would also check out Pandora, they usually have good and not well known artists (but still AWESOME). :)
