Mrs. Mary Jane's Picture
Mrs. Mary Jane, Grand Forks, ND Age and Occupation: 26, Instructional Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lead Programmer Engagement Date: February 28, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: City Hall About Me: I'm a career woman on the surface and a homemaker at heart. I love fast cars and high heels, and my favorite food is cake. Mr. Mary Jane and I are both full-time employees and students, and we just bought our first house. We love to curl up on the couch with buttery popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and the latest Netflix arrival -- whenever we can get a break from everyday life.
About Mrs. Mary Jane

Compromise can be a bad word, or it can be the best thing ever. In a recent post, I talked about the fine line between expressing yourself and alienating your guests. Some people choose to walk it, and others choose to place themselves squarely on one side or the other. Mr. Mary Jane and I chose to walk the line… just a little.

Before I show you our design, I’ll show you our inspiration. First, recall my original inspiration, the Mascaras’ Save The Dates.

I was all set to create that design… and then I saw these.

And I loved ’em. It was time to get to work.

I wanted to retain some of the style elements of the Ceremony invitations and a throwback to our picnic paper products, and my first crack at Photoshop design really reflected this. Then Mr. Mary Jane and I agreed that the large font (Inked God) was a little too overbearing for this announcement. We do plan to put a wedding photo of us on the front of the announcement and from what we’ve seen, our wedding doesn’t really reflect a splattery, grungy style. The smaller cursive font (CAC Pinafore) was OK, but I wasn’t thrilled with it.

And then I realized that there was really no reason that these had to reflect the other paper products. These were entirely different, and most of the people receiving these had not received any of the other stuff. After those realizations, I changed up the fonts a lot until I finally came up with a combination we both liked: Veteran Typewriter for the small font, and Jellyka Saint-Andrew’s Queen for the big one.

Here are those first two iterations: the “throwbacks to old designs” on the left, and the new one on the right.

And yes. There are spelling errors. It’s a mock-up. Don’t hate! So I got all of this done and I… just wasn’t really feeling it. That’s when Mr. Mary Jane and I had that conversation about the wording, and he said [paraphrased]: “I’d just say: ’We got married, thanks, bye.’ I’m not used to this ’pleased’, ’knot-tying’, or ’unifying-of-family’ gushy-ness.”

Feeling snarky, I mocked him up an ’ideal’ announcement. (The blurred stuff on top is our last name/street address.)

To my surprise, I really liked it. It was so simple and to the point. Perfect… almost! I decided to try again with something a little more. [The "lived happily" font is called "Jane Austen", and was also used for our names.]

Neat. Picture that arriving in a nice envelope with a photo of us on the opposite side. I can’t take credit for the genius of the 093… That was Mr. Mary Jane’s idea. We’ve got it engraved on our wedding rings, too!

But… is this one little card really enough? What about my inspiration design, with all of its foldy-ribbony goodness? I decided to try to carry through the simple design of the postcard to the more interesting layout of the folded style. Here is the result.

I haven’t actually printed anything yet because I’m still undecided about what design to use. Should we use the final accordion style (the picture directly above this paragraph)? Or crisper 093 postcard style?

Which style should we choose?

As with the ceremony invitations, I used the following free Photoshop brushes: Damned Hearts and Vector Hearts, both from brusheezy.com. And all of those free fonts came from Dafont.com.

I love both! How many of these are you planning on sending out? If you think you won’t mind making all the accordion announcements, then go for those, but honestly I love the simple ones, too : )

I love reading your posts! We’re eloping next summer so I’ve been trying to come up with some idea to ‘announce’ it when we get back. I’m leaning towards a postcard with a picture of us on one side. But that accordian style is pretty friggin’ awesome. What size paper will you use? Can’t wait to see what you end up with!

I like the wording and look of the 9^3 postcard…but the general accordion idea is also pretty. Do you have pictures back from your wedding? Maybe you could do the 09^3 design on one part of the accordion, then a picture of you two, then a short and simple Thanks for the love and support on the last flap? That’s only 3 parts instead of 4 but it would still have a similar look to the accordion, of course you could also put in a 2nd picture if you wanted 4 parts.

I lovelovelovelove the postcard announcement!!! The only thing I would change is to write ‘and WE lived happily ever after.’ Otherwise, perfection!

Hahaha, maybe it’s wrong but I love the one that just says “We got married. (thought you should know.)” Brilliant.

Oh gosh, I love them all! I voted that you go with the postcard one since it will make it much more simple for everyone involved, and I really like how crisply all the information is displayed.

I like the accordian style, but I think the postcard would be the most simple and easy for you guys!

I LOVE “we met in a bar” I just created my own version of her kids table activity book. That website is full of inspiration.

I voted for the accordian style. You may have had a “simple & to the point” ceremony, but the design is so fabulous. Every bride deserves to go a little crazy… :) Nice job!

Both turned out really cute! I really like the 09^3, but the accordian is nice as well. Why don’t you print mock ups of both then flip a coin. I find that my secret favorites reveal themselves if I’m disappointed by the flip. LOL.

It would make my day to get the “We got married. (Thought you should know.)” one in the mail. However, I understand that I’m a little quirky. The postcard style is perfect!

MJ! I totally want you to use the We Got Married (Thought You Should Know). It’s so cute and funny! I know that wasn’t one of the choices, but seriously it made me smile. :)

I like the design of the postcard (in terms of the wording and how it looks on the page) but I like the ribbon too! Could you still incorporate a ribbon with the postcard, and do a compromise that way?

I’d vote for changing the “and they lived happily ever after” on the postcard to “thought you should know”. I agree with Mrs. Mouse, it’s so cute and funny.
