About Ms Potato Chips

Because That’s How I Roll

October 3rd, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Ms Potato Chips

I luurrve my hairstylist. Whenever I leave the salon after paying her a visit, I strut back to my car. I feel that good. Sometimes it’s even a swagger. I find excuses to continue my strut past my car and down the street, to the bank or the bookstore, just to let the wind catch my hair and so that drivers stopped at lights can admire its newfound sheen and gloss.

My hairstylist is awesome in a Top-Model kinda way. She always looks amazingly chic and trendy and put-together, and she gets me, you know? She’s chatty and I’m slightly taciturn in the chair (I love spacing out and relaxing while getting mah hair did) but it works. It just works. I’ve been going to her through two salons and for at least seven years. She has seen me through highlights, lowlights, blondeness (more blondeness than any Portuguese girl should have, in retrospect), shoulder-length dos, red highlights, growing it out, chopping it off, my Season 4 Sex and the City Carrie Bradshaw phase, my Victoria Beckham phase, my Katie Holmes phase, and finally now, my “I want to grow out my bob but my hair doesn’t grow” phase.

a contender for wedding day tresses?

A contender for wedding day tresses?

In fact, my loyalty to my stylist is so fierce that the thought of not having her do my wedding hair appeared on the “CON” side of the “Should we get married out of state?” list. But alas, we are getting married out of state, and to that end, the thought of hunting down a salon and stylist seemed impossibly daunting.

So I thought, as I sometimes do, What would Diddy do? Diddy wouldn’t hunt around for some new stylist; he’s fly in his trusted one, on a jet stocked with Petron. Okay. I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask, although I figured I’d keep the jet and Petron part quiet… you know, in case that part doesn’t pan out.

On my side? The wedding is a mere hour and forty minutes’ drive, and my stylist loves visiting Narragansett. Score! So, while she washed my hair and I stared up at the ceiling, I popped the question, and she replied with an enthusiastic YES, absolutely! Hurrah! She gave me her email address for figuring the deets, but I’m already relieved to have this bit of hair business out of the way.

I must admit, I feel a little like the female version of a hustler (diva) for wanting to bring my personal stylist with me to our wedding.

Is anyone else going to slightly ridiculous lengths for their hair or makeup?

Yay! So glad she can make it to RI to do your hair. I’m having my southern New Hampshire stylist come up to Bar Harbor Maine to do my wedding day hair (and all of my BMs too), but this was a no-brainer since she’s invited to the wedding anyways. (She’s the best man’s wife!)

You are just a dollface and such a burst of energy to the hive!!

I was totally a reluctant wedding planner and felt overwhelmed for months before I could get started, but once I realized it was my wedding and I didn’t have to follow a set format, I came around!

I think it’s so special and awesome that your stylist is going to be able to come out to do your ‘do on your big day!!

Can’t wait to read about all of your plans!

I asked my stylist too! Only its a 6 hour drive for her. She agreed and I was ecstatic but she later had to cancel as she got preggars (yay!). So I made an appointment with some random hairdresser….we’ll see how it goes!

That’s awesome your stylist is coming. My wedding is 7 hours away so no personal stylist for me. Hopefully I pick a good one

Thankfully my hair stylist happens to be my MOH’s aunt as well - she’ll be traveling more than 5 hours via car for our day. But because I love her so, she’ll also be a guest at our wedding. :) Glad that worked out for you, isn’t it funny how awesome hair can really boost your confidence?

I’m doing a similar thing, my mom’s had the same stylist for years and she’s going to drive an hour and a half to do my hair (and my mom’s) the day of the wedding!

First of all… looove the pic. Too funny.

Second of all.. you won’t regret it! I did the same exact thing. I had a hairstylist I drove two hours to my hometown for [usually I just tied my hair getting done into a trip home] and so when it came down to my wedding day hair I knew that I could trust no other. One thing you can check off your list with no regrets and no stress. ;-)

First of all: I am so glad you started blogging. I look forward to your post every time I log in.

Second: I’m so jealous. The costs on bringing my hair dresser in were prohibitive. I live in NYC, but am getting married north of Boston (being from NH originally.) And really, I am insanely devoted to my hairdresser because he knows how to handle my super curly hair. I am just petrified about finding someone up there who can do my hair anywhere near as well as he does!

I wish I was as attached to a hairdresser as you - I pretty much go to someone different every time. Haha, and what phase was the pic from?

Your post is cracking me up–”what would Diddy do?” ;) I was lucky enough that my awesome hairstylist offered to do hair for the entire wedding party as her present to me!

A. You are hilarious.

B. I hired a makeup artist from Sephora to travel to northern NH to do my makeup after a “springtime meets circus” makeup trial at the spa at my venue. At first I thought “who am I” for doing this. Then another lovely hostess pointed out I am a bride with 2 wks to go that just needed something to go right. Nuff said!

Love it!!!! One of the reasons we are NOT having a destination wedding is because I need my hair stylist/magician there with me…for that FABULOUS hair and as an added bonus…she does AMAZING make-up…without charging “wedding” prices.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my stylist. Like, we text when I’m not there. And she GETS me and she GETS my style and she KNOWS what works and what doesn’t. Well, she’s in North Carolina; we are moving to Minnesota next month (HOORAY!) and our wedding is in Minnesota… so I’m in the same boat. Do I hunt down my former stylist in Minnesota, or do I talk to my fab. North Carolina stylist and see if she can travel to MN???? :( What’s a girl to do????

I used to live in Boston and swore by Naomi at Avanti, when I moved back to NY I would still travel to have her cut my hair. I eventually had to find someone new down here, but I LOVED having her cut my hair!

I know exactly how you feel about hairdresser attachment! I have been going to my stylist for 8-9 years (I’ve lost count now…), and I’ve had to stalk her down after leaving 2 salons in the past (who both refused to tell me where she’d gone, and wouldn’t let her have her client book so she could contact us)! So, the thought of not having her do my hair for the wedding (or just having someone else cut my hair for that matter) immediately makes me break out in hives and a cold sweat…the horror! You are lucky that your stylist is going to make the trip! I am so happy that my FI and I are getting married in my hometown so that I can enlist my stylist’s services!
