Hide and Seek: With Lanterns

October 3rd, 2009 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Parfait

So I understand that paper lanterns are oh-so-trendalicious right now. I can see the appeal! They’re relatively cheap; they don’t take much effort to set up and break down; and they’re like giant, colorful bubbles floating around an otherwise formal setting!

Lately, I’ve been brainstorming ways to brighten up our dark ballroom. I’m leaning toward the fabric and uplighting ideas mentioned earlier, because they would actually mask parts of the room. Paper lanterns wouldn’t hide anything, but do serve the purpose of drawing attention away from dark areas. The picture below has dark tables and chairs, but the globes bring color and cheer into the space!

Lights can be inserted in the paper spheres, as shown by several online tutorials. I love how the lanterns below are in our colors! I could see this in our ballroom, even though it’s indoors, with all-white or warm golden lights inside each one. And wouldn’t the first dance pictures be magical with these shining lanterns surrounding us? Mmmm, globe-y, glowy goodness…

For lanterns that would last a lifetime, view the example below. I would purchase these and reuse them around the deck or patio of our future home. Add a few lounge chairs, colorful throws, and beaded pillows for a sweet space to relax outdoors! Okay, I’m getting carried away, and I probably cannot afford the amount we would need to make an impact… but just look at these gorgeous things and try not to get inspired:

From Love and Splendor

I’ve never seen paper lanterns in a wedding I’ve attended, but I’m sure some of you have. What do you think—are paper lanterns overdone? Where would you hang the Moroccan lanterns at a wedding for maximum effect?

I’ve never seen paper lanterns at a wedding either but my mum (reading WB over my shoulder!) said she went to a wedding where they hung Chinese lanterns around and it was really lovely.

I love the Moroccan lanterns, but will they match the theme/feel of your wedding? I don’t think paper lanterns are overdone! I do think you need a whole lot of them to make an impact though.

I’ve only seen one wedding with paper lanterns in real life. I loooooove the Moroccan lanterns, but I do think they would be tres cher!

We used paper lanterns for my daughter’s engagement party. They looked really lovely, especially paired with tiny ‘bee’ lights.

The Moroccan lanterns would look really amazing if you concentrated them together over, say, the dance floor (and just think of the first dance pictures! ;) )–and that would keep costs down over scattering them throughout the room, while providing greater impact.

I have been to a wedding with paper lanterns (all white) and they were a really great effect. You do need a lot of them, though.

I’ve only seen paper lanterns in internet-weddings, never in a real-life wedding! Definitely not overdone and I love how cheery and whimsical they are!

We had paper lanterns at our wedding and they were gorgeous! We hung them over globe lights and strung them among the trees. They were perfect.

i’ve been thinking of using Moroccan lamps on the tables of a restaurant we’re considering for our hometown reception.

maybe more as a centerpiece than hung up?

i don’t think they’re overdone. remember, you’re wedding-primed so you’re exposed to lots and lots of pictures of weddings, way more than your guests are so they won’t necessarily know whether things are trends, let alone overdone. so don’t worry about it!

i’d use morroccan lanterns in clusters, probably hanging over a table or something. but i really like the paper lanterns. you wanted a more joyous feel right? i’d definitely go with paper lanterns for that.

i love the moraccan ones! i agree that you’ll probably use them again in your backyard or even indoors. and i think they bridge the dark colors to the lighter ones a little better.

I had never heard about paper lanterns until I found Weddingbee. When it comes to your wedding, I don’t believe in over-done or too much of ;)

I personally love the paper lanterns. We used them for our tented wedding and everyone else loved them as well! I do agree that you need a lot to make an impact but I bought 150 in different sizes and it looked amazing! I think the moroncan lanters would be too hard to light and too heavy to hang….

My #3 goal of looking at reception venues? (other than cost and being close by)-the ability to hang some wicked paper lanterns.

I don’t know what your venue is like, but maybe you could hang a few of the mororcon lanterns up the walkway leading to the venue?

Loved the lanterns at our wedding. But, wow!, I didn’t realize how many it would take to make an impact in our space (we had 2-3 dozen lanterns, in a not-too-large space). Don’t know whether I overestimated the number of lanterns or underestimated the space, but they wound up looking few and far between.

I’m using a battery operated paper lantern as my centerpiece with candles around it! Cheaper than flowers, and I love that it provides soft light. I just love them!
