Mrs. Lamb's Picture
Mrs. Lamb, Norfolk Age and Occupation: 25, Homeland Security Consultant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graduate Student Engagement Date: January 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Trinity Presbyterian Church/Harrison Opera House About Me: I’m a Homeland Security Consultant with a tendency towards pulling office pranks, taking lunch breaks, and drinking Wawa shakes. I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!
About Mrs. Lamb

From my first post about wanting to design my wedding gown using my grandmothers’ and mother’s gowns, you know that foreboding music was playing. If you know me and my I Love Lucy tendencies for getting involved in humdingers, you’ll know that nothing ever goes without a hitch in my planning processes.

The first hitch was that my paternal grandmewether couldn’t find her dress. After her wedding she preserved it and decades later, my Aunt wore it for her wedding. After my Aunt wore it, we sort of lost track of it, and my Aunt thinks it was lent out again, but never returned.

Hmmm… now I was down 1 dress, which also means we were also lacking quite a bit of material on which we had been counting. I couldn’t afford much more material due to the cost of having the dress designed and sewn by hand. My friendor/designer suggested a good workaround for this setback and assured me we could scour thrift stores to find other dresses with useable material.

The second hitch was that my maternal grandmewether had never preserved, or for that matter cleaned, her dress after the wedding. The hem was filthy and there was a rust stain, as well as what could have been a motor oil stain. Hmmmm . . . the only workaround here was to either not use those portions, thereby cutting into our fabric supply again, or have the dress dry cleaned and hope it didn’t fall apart (which was not only risky, but also costly).

I was determined to save my idea ,as I had made this project my number 1 priority for the wedding. Whatever anyone else said, I wanted to see this project through and make everyone cry at our wedding because they were in awe of my sentimentality.

The third hitch, which deserves a post of its own, broke the camel’s back. I think it’s the best part of the whole story. It’s the kicker. It puts the hum in the humdinger. It made me do a Lucille Ball signature face:

Have you experienced a setback to a project that you were really invested in? Did you keep pressing on, or did you reach your breaking point?

My mom’s lace is all stained from not being preserved correctly. The only thing I can think to do now is salvage what I can and use it to wrap my bouqet with.
